Well I watch a lot of Brittish TV, and so I'm constantly surprised how many actors I liked in other productions turn out in GoT. Out of the top of my head, the biggest surprise for me was Mark Addy as Robert. Not in a thousand years would I have pictured him playing such a character, and he was marvelous. Actors I already loved and turned out to be fantastic are, without a doubt, Stephen Dillane and Carice van Houten. I know some of you can't quite get behind Carice's Mel yet (men of the room, just pretend I didn't say that), but I love her portrayal. I admit, I may be a bit biased, since I was already familiar with her before the show and always found her to be a gorgeous and highly talented actress. There are waaay to many to name, but I'm also really impressed with Alfie Allen's Theon. I just want to give him a Gibbs-slap every time I see him.

Favs: The King in the North, Great Jon (what are we going to do without him?), King Robert, Ser Baristan Selmy, Syrio, Bronn, Brienne, Tyrion, Jon Snow, Ned and Jory (the scene in Little Finger's cathouse!), Jorah, Jaqen, and I actually like the turncoat, even considering what he did to our house.
Not so much: I'm not a Dany fan (sorry, please don't hate), Yara (yuck!), Talisa , Little Finger, Ser Loras, Maester Pycell, Cersei although I think Lena is outstanding as her, Tywin for being so mean to Tyrion, of course Joffrey even though Jack is outstanding.
The rest I like things about and dislike things about, i.e. old Jaime (meh) then new Jaime (golden), old Catelyn (meh) then later Catelyn(scary!).

Macha I am with you there I wanted to kill someone when I heard Mark Addy was cast as Robert, one episode later he was one of my favourites, he truly embodied and perfect the character of Robert. I love Richard Madden as Robb and bloody hell he understands the character! Sorry bout the mess up that was his storyline but it wasn't his fault, and doesn't change how well he plays the character. The scene in episode 1 of season 2 where he confronts Jaime is GOLD! WildSeed how can you not like Tywin! He doens't hog the scene, he's just one of those guys who has such a presence that all eyes are on him. Something that I think book Tywin had as well.

That's funny Cary. I was just writing a similar thing about Ser Jorah in another thread. I haven't read the books, so I don't know for sure, but it seems like based on actions alone, I would think Ser Jorah is a leering creepy old guy. Yet they cast his part so brilliantly that you can't help but like him. It's amazing what a difference casting makes.
I can see that Tywin could come off as the evil patriarch based on his actions. But Charles Dance does a wonderful job of making him likeable. They struck gold when they cast him.
I liked Tywin from the start in the books, then again I've always had this weird thing, even as a kid, where I cheer for the bad guy and hope just once the bad guy can win. I was cheering for Scar in Lion King, lemme just get that off my chest. So liking Tywin came natural for me.
Black as Snow, in the books his this lurch type hairy oke who is in his forties but basically hits on a 13-14 year old girl.

Funny enough Charles Dance played the villian in "The Last Action Hero" ( underrated flick IMO ), and he had this great line: "In in the real world the bad guys can win!"

LOL. I had that feeling about Jorah. I caught myself a few times cheering him on and wondered why I wasn't rooting for one of the blood riders to castrate him. He's a creepy Khaleesi-betraying, slave-selling pedophile, but I genuinely like him.
Well in his defence in Westeros it's not considered odd for a man in his 50s to marry a teen. I mean look at Walder Frey 90 years old with 15 year old wife. There was this one bloody funny thing they ommited in the series. Walder: She'll give me a son before the year is out. Catelyn: I'm sure she will give you many sons. Walder: Maybe I'll make him my heir. Wouldn't that piss the others off.
Walder's oldest son is in his 70s and not the Lord Frey yet.

Frey is a disgusting individual, book or HBO. The actor who plays him however (also from Harry Potter series, and I like him in there, too) is spot on wonderful.

Yikes! I agree with so much of that that it's downright disturbing. Disagree on the turncoat, who cannot possibly suffer enough as far as I am concerned. Jorah meh, but mostly because Dany meh.
But you skipped my man Sam, second in my estimation only to Tyrion. John Bradley's Sam is one of the few show characters I love even more than I loved them in the books. He is just perfect.
Also Arya - despite the Harrenhall changes, show Arya does a superb job of portraying the essence of Book Arya
And I hate show Shae more than book Shae, mostly because I am very afraid D&D are nicening her up for a major plot change.

I do apologize and you are correct, IMO, Samwell is wonderful. He is book wonderful, he is HBO wonderful. The actor hopefully will go on to do great things entertainment wise after he's done with GOT. I do hold my ground on the turncoat though.
Spoiler
Totally disfunctional family where his siblings even his sister is opendly favored over him. Given over to a family pretty much as a hostage even though the Starks pretty much raise him and do a pretty damn good job. What happens next season just sickened me. I understand it's the GOT world but, made my tummy rumble. Does it give him an excuse to attempt to kill Bran, Rickon, people of Winterfell, not at all, there is no excuse. But, I have pity for him, like a beaten dog who has gone mean.

So true about Frey. Balon Greyjoy was spot on too though maybe not becoming a regular (?)

Your reasoning is sound and your compassion admirable. Part of me wishes I could share it. It's going to be harder for me to maintain my hard line

when the show reveals his fate, because D&D have made him so much less despicable than in the books, and I am already dreading the non-reader cries of "poor Theon!"

the King in the North recover and behead him, justice done. Can not condone torture, even for the turncoat.
However, it's GRRM's world, he has the power of the pen.

I want a Maisie for my christmas ! But i really like Bradley , Farley, Costen Waldau, Gleeson , Christie, Bean so ftw , really too hard to choose (bis repetita and boring to death sinc it's all about love , Kit excepted)
