Sex & Violence in HBO's Game of Thrones

As this is a subject that often leads to heated discussions, I thought it should have its own thread. And what better way to start than by asking how do you feel about the decision to edit some of those scenes for the upcoming premiere in New Zeeland? Do you this might diminish the overall experience for the audience?

I don't think I've run into a case of censorship I wasn't avidly against. Regardless of how carefully they ensure they don't effect the story, it's up to the viewer, not the television station, to choose what is and isn't appropriate for viewing.

Those poor Kiwi's they are a sensitive folk!

I think it is funny how some countries rail against the sex ( like the US ) and others against the violence ( like Germany).

Nothing in the Tv show has bothered me, except the S2 E2 brothel scene, I am no prude but I found that scene rather pointless.

Sorry New Zealand you're missing out folks. I rather like the nudity in GoT as it depicted the lifestyle
at the time and in the books. The only scene that disgust me was sadomasochistic GoT Joffrey
( Roz and teenage whore ). It was over the top and unnecessary. I get that this was probably to
depict Joffrey's cruelty but viewers were already up to speed with that. Plus he had see Moore
partially strip Sansa for public display. women were objectified in Medieval days and brothels
a reality as it is truthful today. Denying that will not change anything except create more ignorance.
I am definitely for more male and female nudity because aside from being realistic, it's fair.

I don't particularly care about the sex and the violence one way or the other, but there's no way to edit out the sexposition in season 1 and leave the series intact and comprehensible for our Kiwi friends. Maybe they'll just blur out the offending body parts. Lol.

Personally, the violence doesn't bother me, except for the scene WildSeed mentions above with the two whores. That was deeply disturbing to me. That is the only episode I haven't watched multiple times. The writers should not have gone there. And the scene with Ros in the whorehouse during Little Finger's nostalgic reverie about Lady Stark would've been fine if it have been about a third as long as it was. But it was too much for my tastes, not to mention a waste of time on a series that already doesn't have enough time to devote to many of the plot lines.

I've actually watched the show without the sex scenes. Had to do it with my younger brother and bloody hell you miss quite alot. I've often had to pause and explain things that were made obvious in the sex scenes. Which worked fine but can't see how the story will flow without someone there to explain why certain characters do certain things.
The only scene that I felt was unneccesary was the "play with her arse" one. The exposition was good when it finally came, but the "do this and that" and "the he's just so good." that was just not needed.

I think it's important tho differentiate between "Nude" and " Sex " scenes in the show. This did not always
happen simultaneously. An example is the young woman in the bar with Bronn and Sandor just before
the Blackwater battle. She may have disrobed for sex later as Roz did in front of Varys but disrobed/nude
women were common . The Victorian Era had not come to be yet. I enjoy the nudity in the series as long
as it's fair and balanced ( I'm also addressing this as a mature adult without parental guidance ). I enjoyed
Danerys's first bath scene with the scalding water because it illustrated a major point about her nature.

The Sex and Violence in the show will clearly become an issue for "Preens" ( pre-teen) who wish to view GoT,
but that becomes an issue of the viewer household or parents. I enjoy the battle scenes ( loved Centurion )
and can handle a bit of realistic gore ( my office is adjacent to the hospital morgue after all ) because I
am used to cadavers. But I hate seeing senseless violence or too much gnashing of limbs, I am squeamish
about stuff sometimes but that's just me. I do not care for " Horror " shows at all, those are off the table
for me.

From what shows like GoT are attempting, it's in the spirit of the books and pleasing an audience that may
look forward to it.

15? You certainly have different standards in S.A. as to what constitutes acceptable viewing age. I don't think we can stop 15 year olds from watching programs like GoT uncensored here. Maybe 13 year olds

But Aegon you only censored the sex, but not the voilence? In real life violence will mess ya up a whole lot more than sex. Ah and like Cary said, I was also pretty world weary by the time I was 14, and that was even before the Internet!

Well that is debateable. I've read several case studies about the ffects of porn on the younger mind and they are quite scary. Whereas we men are natural warriors, give a young boy a banana it becomes a gun, a stick becomes a sword. So yeah the battle scenes were fine. If say the Joff and the Prostitutes scene did not have nudity in, I still would not have allowed him to see it. Also won't allow him to see the Bastard of Bolton torture scenes.

I do think it's funny that some people went nuts when animals were harmed on-screen, like when Ned killed Lady or when The Mountain chopped his horse's head off.

Yeah he's actually a very calm, shy oke. He's built like a friggen linebacker and almost as tall as I am but he's **** shy in front of girls. Never even made out with one. But a friggen great guy, also a very talented rugby player.

You can't chop a horse's head off, but Stannis slice that bloke's head in two its fine. Yeah lol that is funny! Wonder what they are gonna do when the Mammoths make their violent appearance.

 Some European contries consider the US prudish on certain issues and I agree. Yet what I hear os SA surprises

 me. Cary Storm we would be having a different discussion if we both referred to local customs of the "genteel

 South" in the US hmm . Honestly I'm amazed with the violence in video games and Play Station games my

 nephew showed me last year. I had to refuse him when he asked me to purchase one for him. I bought him

baseball gear enough for a team with every conceivable piece of gear needed. He loved it and started a softball

team in the neighborhood. I was relieved because it could have gone the other way with resentment.

The only thing I don't like is torture.  The rat and bucket scene left me hitting redial for Dora the Explorer until that scene was done. Beheading the horse scene I knew was coming by then so did the same thing.  I would not change it, it is integral to the subject, brutality. I just choose to look away briefly and come right back.

Brienne is awesome and one of my favourite characters, but I think Randyll Tarly had the right of it. I shudder to think what would have happened had there been a battle and she'd been captured by common men at arms.

        all details I recall. I believe Mich sent them for free and said good riddance. They are smaller and eel-like

        from pictures but they give me the creeps large or small. Remind me too much of large water snakes like

        Boas or something. Smaller water snakes are poison too. 

        Is Black Pudding the same as " Spotted Dick "? Why the name BTW ?

          smile This one will enjoy any feast with friends. I will be satisfied with a Capon or Fish steak with

          field greens and Arbor Gold to wash it down. The Auroch will no doubt roast nicely for the

          crowd also honoring you. Should someone speak with Macha about the Spicy Honeyed Locust

          for dessert ? Cherries and creme, grapes and pommegranets are divine this time of year sire.

First, I suggest moving this discussion to the recipes thread. Second, I suck at desserts. I'm all for locusts and all other oddities though. One of the best meals I've had in Paris was frogs in Provençale sauce.

 Hear, hear! Those vile fish are nasty.  They have a round mouth with teeth like razors and they hook their mouths onto other, better tasting fish and bore holes in them.  They are carnivorous.  I believe they were bred by the Freys!bleh

 As an American liberal and anti-puritan I applaud all of the non-violent sex scenes and call for more! I especially enjoyed Bronn's banter with his naked whore and Roz' with naked Theon. I'm one of the few who didn't mind the Littlefinger instruction scene because I thought it illustrated very well the cynical nature of a brothel (not that I'm an expert ....) And I am strongly with Mrs. H'gar in deploring the lack of a nude scene for Jaquen. 

But I am also squeamish about the graphic violence. Had to fast-forward through Talisa's amputation and Roz' Joffrey-directed beating. I am prepared for the book violence, but those two were added and just plain gratuitous.

 Aegon I am so very sorry to hear that. As an American southerner I shouldn't be surprised - 45 years after the end of American apartheid mixed-race couples are still not welcome in many places - but I had hoped SA would do better than us.

 Seriously???  Mixed marriages are not an issue here whatsoever.  I have gone to other parts of the US where people did self-segregate and make an issue of mixed race couples, but not around here.  It's pretty normal here.

Love the new Avatar Black as Snow.
Yeah it's bad and don't think it's only from the White side, Black guys have been disinherited and cast from their tribes because they fell in love with a white woman. The same with the Indian folk over here. It is more common to see races date and marry within their own racial parametres.
This is quite funny seeing as we have an entire sub culture of people who call themselves coloureds. They number in the millions and are especially numerous in the Western Cape. They originated from the first White Settlers who had coitus with the black tribes.

Yeah it's bad and don't think it's only from the White side, Black guys have been disinherited and cast from their tribes because they fell in love with a white woman. The same with the Indian folk over here. It is more common to see races date and marry within their own racial parametres.
This is quite funny seeing as we have an entire sub culture of people who call themselves coloureds. They number in the millions and are especially numerous in the Western Cape. They originated from the first White Settlers who had coitus with the black tribes.

        laws, the understanding ceases there. We also tend to have short term memories of what forever remains

        true and good ( as nature and life is forever evolving ). As African and Native Tribes sought unity to bind peace

        with former enemies by marriage, the streaming of genetic material has forever gone forth ( the other means

        was rape of course. So through established global scientic research and Genomic studies, it has been verified 

        that there  is no such thing as a " pure race ". Mendel was not the first to hybridize, men were. We are it is

        known, a result of many factors when it comes to the unscientic term " race ". The Institute of Human Origins

        dismisses the concept entirely. When you look at your neighbor you are seeing more than the result of two

        people marrying or giving birth, you are viewing a history of genetic change . Just my two cents. blankstare
