I'm thinking a collective thread for interviews with the cast & creators of the show might come in handy, and what better way to kick it off than with an interview with The Man himself, GRRM.

'Game of Thrones' Season 3 Characters And Scoop From Creator George R.R. Martin

Summary and audio available.

Disclaimer: Please link the interviews instead of quoting them, and tag your spoilers so that TV viewers would also be able to join the discussion.

Edit: Audio fidelity not whitstanding that was truly a wonderful podcast, great find and so very insightful!

Loved it as well, though the audio was annoying at times. He seemed too far away, had to turn up the volume and them BAM! everybody in the audience laughs and my ears start bleeding.

Ok now I have a pet peeve, first one actually.

Spoiler

I love to hear GRRM talk about the narrative process in general, and his style in particular. LOVED his take on power and the castles built on sand analogy.

I wonder how the show's gonna tackle Robert's rebellion, when it comes to it. They'll probably keep close to the books and use characters' recollections, it seems like the honest thing to do, since it'd be really difficult to film it without the risk of contradicting certain POVs from the books.

Lol Macha, tell us how you really feel.

3 of my friends are Tv only GOT fans and they had no problems with Robb and Talisa, I am also puzzled the way it was handled though I guess I am not that worked up about since

Yes but why it happens is very important. Right now I'm thinking the stupid bastard has it coming!
I like Talisa more than Jeyne, but not how the story was changed. If you just take the two characters story line aside, Talisa is much more interesting than Jeyne, however I was one of those who were hoping she was a Westerling in disguise.

Short interview with Tom Wlaschiha, seems like he may be on-board for future appearances, though not S3. The piece is in German, subtitles at the bottom.

Interview with Joe Dempsie on S3 and beyond here. It doesn't contain any spoilers outside of a few details about the new characters in S3.

Well Macha one can accuse gay men of many things, being unstylish is not one of them. But he really dresses like they do over here. Mayhaps they follow him.

Short interview with Julian Glover here. It looks like he came up with the changes to Pycelle's character. Personally, I'm glad he did, I enjoyed his scene with Ros in S1 immensely.

GRRM : A few snippets from his interview with NJMonthly:

“A constant challenge is how do you keep all these plots straight? I feel like I’m juggling a bunch of balls, and sometimes it’s hard to keep all the balls separate from each other. The sheer size of the series is daunting.”

“I love the scene between Robert and Cersei in the first season where they talk about their marriage, and their history together, and I of course love the scene in my own episode, Blackwater – but I didn’t actually write it, David and Dan added it – the brothel scene where the Hound and Bronn almost go at it. And a couple of the scenes between Varys and Little Finger, that are of course not in the book, were wonderful, too.”

“There are the original scenes, scenes that are not in the books that David and Dan have added.  Those are great too, I’ve been very pleased with the majority of those. The one thing I miss is the third category, the scenes in the books that never make it to the screen. Scenes that were cut, because some of those were good scenes. Good dialogue, good bits of business, and important in some cases, and I miss them, knowing the books as well as I do, and I watch the show, and I’m like, ‘Oh, this scene is going come! Oh, they cut that scene”.”

“[examples of those “missing scenes” referred to above] Ned’s dream, after his leg is injured, the Tower of Joy scene. That was an important scene, an atmospheric scene, which would’ve translated [to the screen] really well. It would’ve had to be done in a very stylized manner, but I miss that. You know, in the first book, the scene where Arya and Sansa are discussing Rheagar’s rubies and the Trident, and Arya wants to go riding with her friend Micah, and Sansa wants them to go visit the Queen’s wheelhouse and eat lemon cakes, and they have an argument about it. Oddly enough, that scene was the basis of the auditions for those two roles, so Maisie William and Sophie Turner won their roles for doing their respective dialogue for Arya and Sansa in that scene, and they both did it wonderfully. I was looking forward to seeing that scene on screen, but then, you know, they cut it. I mean, it isn’t really necessary, it’s a character scene, and mostly that’s what has been cut, not the stuff that advances the plot, but the little character parts.”

“There is part of me that wishes we had, like, 12 episodes per season. Like other HBO shows do, instead of just 10. Or maybe even if we had like, 14 episodes per season, and then we could get in a lot more of these small character scenes.”

“I’m very excited to see Diana Rigg playing the Queen of Thorns.”

“Season four, that will be the second half of Storm of Swords. So by season five, which is at least a year and a half away, we will start worrying about the integration of A Feast For Crows and Dance with Dragons”

“People would have forgotten the entire series if I had not come out with Feast in 2005, it would have been a decade between books and that probably would have been too long.”

“You want people to be eager for your book; the downside is when the people forget the series even exists.  And far from rioting, if they just don’t care anymore. So, that’s what you really don’t want.”

The Interview site false advertised it! freakout they printed this:

The Panel will include creator George RR Martin, producers and showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, cast members including Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Kit Harrington, Michelle Fairley, Richard Madden, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.

There is no King in the North, he's not there.
On an up note, it is a wonderful interview session, halfman is a crack up!

Didn't know exactly where to put this, so I'll just drop it off here. *prepares landing zone*

Just come back from this thingy - East European Comic-Con, and from a panel with Finn Jones. I cannot, cannot praise this man enough; by the time the main panel started, he was dead tired (I think he was there all day, I only got there at noon) and he still managed to give a fantastic one man show.

I arrived too late for the photo shoot session, so I only chatted with him for a bit at the autograph signing and we ended up visualizing *book spoilers*

Spoiler
Dude is hilarious, really. And I didn't even like the guy before this.

The panel had only questions from the audience (and most of them really good ones), which was very refreshing. At one point his convention manager asked him one, which was "who is the character you'd like to play other than yourself?" - apparently it's an inside joke because they get asked this a lot and he hates it. Finally he went with "a dragon! the sexy one! who is the sexy one, Rakharo? No..? Oh Drogon. Ok I'll play him!"

I could barely stand at this point so I don't remember much, BUT here are two or three highlights. First, he mentioned he went thorough a lot of auditions before landing the part, including Jon Snow and Robb Stark (this made me giggle beause I could see him as Jon, but as Robb?! hehe). Second, talking about changes in the show he implied

Spoiler
Spoiler
And a couple of things for the lolz, when asked which character would he kill if he could, and after going for Mel initially, he settled on Dany who's "SO whiny...all....the...time! woman, relax, come to Highgarden, pluck some flowers, just chill!" Instant like. Oh and something that had me in tears was his answer for "which is the weirdest fanfic you've ever read (re: your character)", where he went on describing something about him and Gethin Anthony watching a trashy movie and eating chinese food off each other's chests. Speaking of Gethin, someone asked him if he had imagined a background for Loras and Renly how they met etc, and he said he didn't but that Gethin once came to him and had pages and pages written about their history together and how they'd go each year on their anniversary to a special place and eat peaches or something, and how he basically went "Dude... are you alright?"

So anyway, that's that. Here you can see some crappy pictures I took when I was not delirious from fever. I'm only sorry I missed John Rhys-Davies, I understood he was wonderful.

PS: If you're thinking "what is that Lannister sigil doing there?", it just happened to be in front of the couch, there were more of them aligned on the stage. And yes, I failed miserably to grab a Dragonstone one.

Yvy - yes I did, I mentioned it in a thread (Leisurely maybe) a while back when the event was announced. I'm only sorry I didn't think of pimping the forum at the Q&A session, LOL.

andi - Practically everybody at the autograph signing hugged him, he was very sweet. But I didn't want the poor man to get the flu from me so no I didn't touch his curls, we only shook hands. Had I known you have a hair fetish....

Don - that's exactly what I was thinking while reading that interview, an audio commentary on one of the episodes would be fantastic. And I think it's safe to assume that's a given at this point, with the amount of attention their storyline will be getting this season.

macha, there's no words on elvish or entish or dwarvish or the human tongues to express how utterly jealous I am, and I never even liked finn jones! but after reading your post, I'm beginning to like him. I loved to read about his knowledge of the geeky theories and all that.

No idea where to post this but it looks like finally Martin posted a bunch of stuff about what he thinks the series - books relation is in one long ass NaB post. Most importantly he answered a lot of comments about show/books comparison and what he thinks about it.

It is here if anyone is actually still interested.
grrm.livejournal.com/412015.html

He talks about adaptations too and what's book canon. Some of it he said before but this bit was interesting, because he straight on addressed some portion of die hard book readers outrageous comments that HBO "betrays" the source, as if HBO has no right to adapt unwritten material:

grrm.livejournal.com/412015.html

For those too lazy to click on the links he said:

I write the books as fast as I can, but that's not very fast. They are very big, very complex, very challenging. I have never been a fast writer, and the passage of years is not making me any faster. Is it "kinda awkward?" Sure. Is it a "betrayal?" I think that's harsh, and unkind, and untrue.
