Sister Cities and Twin Towns of the World

aww When was the last time you paid any attention to the sign posted outside your City's Local Government

Building or City Hall. There was likely a special dedication written on a bronze plate of whom your

Sister City or Town or Township or Province or Prefecture exist for in the world. You need not belong to

a major city or ruled out because of country roads or rural access. smile

Sister City Charters " Promote Peace and Human Contact " according to all participating International

Govt. and has been growing to include more Cities everyday. Some places share the Same Name as well

and are co- listed as Twin City designation to add. Along with human partnerships, Business Agreements

are forged to promote commerce and trade. the next time you consider an arbitrary location to visit, try

looking up your Sister City. aww

Below are a few I quick referenced for a few members ( I forgot Kalamazoo Michigan but will add ASAP )

There are more to list depending on exact locations:

Known Sister Cities for Gonaives  Haiti       _____Nantes France and Portland Maine

Oakland California _____Agadir Morrocco and 8 other countries

San Francisco Calif_____Sydney Australia and too many to list

Albuquerque New Mexico_Albuquerque Spain + many in Mexico

(?) Long Island New York_ was not a designation but the entire state is listed

                                   Pretoria South Africa____Washington DC

Bucharest Romania _____ Atlanta Georgia, Detroit Michigan, Athens Georgia, Athens

                                                                                                                                                       Greece

                                  Aruba/Curacao (Antilles)__Amsterdam Netherlands

                                  Northunberland England__Berwick Pennsylvania

The Twin City designation is quite interesting and often associated with past colony status or immigrants

aggregating to that area of the world. Notably England, France ,Spain ,Dutch East India Corporation and

Portugal.

For instance much of upper state of New York has Dutch EIC Trading historical artifacts and names like

Haarlem New York. In New York City proper, all area are divided into "Boroughs" similarly named in

England ( although slightly revised in formula ).

In the American South and Northern states and colonies of England, distinct city names, customs and

dialects persist even today. That's another whole subject there folks, the story of English.

Anyway, a few examples before you nod off yawn  :  Northumberland County Virginia, Northumberland

as Cities in : New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, blah blah

you get the picture. There's Chathams and Newcastles and Shropshires and more. And we thought we

were original in the States. biggrin

So ladies and lords of the Realm, discover yourselves a bit more and share what you know. As usual

please correct or revise my fancy decipherings as you post your responses in the Thread.

As Promised for Kalamazoo Michigan, Sister cities are : Kingston Jamaica, Numazu Japan , Pushkin Japan
Palmerston North New Zealand.

These designations can be easily found listed with your local government or easy access from the web
by looking up your your country and city ( under Sister City ). Another search may provide Twin City
designations as well.

So learn a new language or skip and hop to the nearest Sister city to to say Buna Dimineata ! Mersi!
Merci ! Bai Dankie ! Masha Danki ! Muchas Gracias ! Thenke ye ! Thank You !

Some European countries are looking to get rid of the whole twin city thing, saying it serves no purpose anymore in today's world...hmm.gif   I had to look up Buenos Aires' ones, and man, that's some family! Poor mother! The list is too long to write it, so I'll just link it here.

Aww that's too bad if it's accurate. Every year in the USA, governors of every state travel to foreign Sister Cities

to promote growth. It's working as far as I know, can't speak to more impoverished area of the world though.

The Continent of Africa is named a Sister City in almost every state here tho I wonder how much ( aside from

annual health campaigns ( that I vounteer for in N California ) an effort any given state does individually. China,

Japan, India, Russia, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Yemen are very big advocates here. The list may actually

be longer, those I remember offhand.

Those from impoverished nations need the connection more and where applicable or affordable , some migrate

there. The Philipines is one such ( chain on Islands ) that benefit greatly from the system.

Detroit has all sorts of "sub towns" like Deerborn is where middle eastern people live, there is Hamtramick for polish people, etc., much like New York and Chicago.  This side of the State is predominately Dutch, with a smattering of German.
