Yes Aegon , It's a bit cheesy but in a good way ... quite humorous too , but the production , costume, scenery and sfx are top notch ! Olivander is the voice of the dragon too.... what more could you want! I think you would like the young Arthur too. Right up your street !
I've seen ssoooooo many versions of this story, TV series or vintage movie, none of them good.
I immersed myself in written accounts, so my expectation of visualizing the story is very high.
One Vintage ( revision ) included Sean Connery as King Arthur and Richard Gere as ?. I forget whom played Merlin, but this one was memorable. Sam O'Neill as king Arthur was hideous. I think " Excalibur " made a decent attempt, but all seem horrid for today's standard. The TV series from earlier years, I've maybe glimpsed at aren't worth mentioning.
So here we have another attempt at this ancient Tale. I caught an unplanned glance a few months ago but dismissed it as I was not able to find it again. I had no idea it was a series. I'm inclined to give it another go, inspired from what interest is stated in postings here.
I never got around to watch Merlin. Might try it some day.
Wildseed - I agree, though I have to say, with it's bad reviews and all, I thought King Arthur (with Clive Owen) was a pretty decent and original adaptation. From a historical perspective, I think I could even say it's the most down to earth interpretation of Arthur's legend.

Absolutely agree Macha ! I love that movie.
WS , This story isn't even trying to adhere ... you have to watch it as if you don't know any of the other stuff , it's just a good yarn... young merlin is very likable .
Hmmmm.... I am a fan of Clive Owen, but never caught the movie he starred in, might be worth looking into that one. Thanks Macha.
I forgot to mention that the most memorable account , in my opinion, is Monty Python's " The Holy Grail ". Sure it's busy and uncouth, but I can't forget it, must have been that Rabbit :D
Ok here are my thoughts on the first episode of Merlin. When comparing it to a show like GOT Merlin falls way short in all the categories, acting, costumes, production value etc. (Gosh I hope Dany's grown dragons won't look like that!) The show certainly has some wooden acting and some really horribly scripted lines (trained from birth to kill. Ugh really?!). The casting choice for Guinever was atrocious and I really hope this is not the person Arthur ends up marrying. Ok that being said, there is a lot of potential here, the story is charming and it takes the legend in an interesting direction. I like both the choices for Merlin and Arthur (I really hope he's not such a prick for the entirety of the show, otherwise Yvy and I may have some words.) I suspect the show will improve on many of the fronts I've mentioned, seeing as it made it for four seasons. So I will continue watching. And for my own enjoyment I will have to stop comparing it to GOT, Uther would've been so much better if played by CHarles Dance. Overall rating 6.0/10

Ha ha ha! They say the things we don't like in others are in fact our own traits! :p
It is really cheesy, I did say ... but if you ignore the complete disregard for the traditional story ( and PLEASE don't compare it to GoT! complete other league)
It just has a charm somehow ... I also think they got a bigger budget as series moved on ... It's early Sat evening show here , so it's a family fav. Think Potter rather than GoT !
