The Night’s Watch takes stock. Varys meets his better. Arya is taken to the commander of the Brotherhood. Dany exchanges a chain for a whip.

Directed by Alex Graves. Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Love the seal, Lady Macha . Lord Beric freakout so far, so good. Just as I had imagined him. I dare say I feel bad for the Hound. Theon? Called it , sorry to say. Was concerned D&D would change it to confound the book readers, although they may still. Not a big Dany fan, but enjoyed her episode this week, no dialogue needed apparently from Selmy and jorah. Sad to lose the Lord Commander, one of those you don't want to see go down, even though you know it's going to happen. Poor Sansa, she so wants to trust someone, and that Nat Dormer, she is slicker that cat poo on the kitchen floor. Don't remember Varys getting his package from UPS Westeros in the book, but o.k. . Like his walk in the gardens with the Queen of Thorns. Very good episode, IMO.

Many, many questions for this thread.
Why no Old Bear saying goodbye to Sam? WHY?
Why are they making everything about LF's plots soooo effin obvious? WHY? O.o There's gotta be something there. Too many shock moments lost, there's gotta be a reason.

Why Pod again? blankstare There better be something to that brothel scene now, or all this fuss is seriously misplaced.
Why the sorcerer in a box? WHY? Well, at least the "Varys as a Blackfyre" theorists might get some food for thought in the next episodes, if they continue that storyline. And they have to, because if they've made that scene only to serve as a basis for Varys's comments about revenge, I will be seriously pissed. I want to see what happens to that man.
Why show that pointless climbing dream, and nothing else? I welcome any Jojen scene but...hello? Bran, your storyline is not making any sense.
Oh, and I can't wait until the next time Dany shows up, because I suspect all non-readers might be thinking she'll definitely make for Westeros this time, and...surprise! Four seasons in Mereen are coming.

Also, I'm expecting BrienneGate.

How much more time needs be wasted to show that Tywin is a adick? Seriously. I think the show has established that without Cersei trying to change the man. And do we really need more proof that Dany is born in Fire and Blood? How much longer are they going to play on her naivety and then have her 'surprise' everyone (Jorah including) when she does something Targaryen like? Come on.

Ok. After hearing all the buzz about this episode, how it was "the best" of the first four, (and I loved so much episode 3 I confess I had really high hopes for this one) and seeing the nearly straight 5 star rating at wicnet i sure feel i'm not getting something. Cause to me, this episode was... fine. Just fine. And the weakest of the four? The worst thing it's that i can't really put a finger on why it didn't really work for me. Let me try explain:

What I loved:
++The Sept! The room is gorgeous and it feels so real. It's absolutely breathtaking.

++Natalie Dormer. Her Margaery is bewitching. Can't stop hanging of her every word and look. All the scenes involving her shone.

++Gwendoline Christie. So much contained emotion, so many unspoken words readable in her eyes! The Jaime scenes where gut wrenching to watch, but it sucked me in, in no small measure due to her acting.

++Theon. Man, thinking back on all three seasons, I feel the Theon Storyline was the best handled one of all. It plays so much with your emotions! And that Theon scene in the corridor was beautifully acted.

What I liked:
+Tywin and Cersei. Nice contrast with the Tyrion meeting and an actually subtle enough inkling on how Tywin's fighting the war.

+Sam and Gilly. There was an undergoing tenderness to the scene. I liked it.

+The night's watch burning the corpse. It works very well as a reminder of what, where, when, and as foreshadowing.

+Loras is the prize offered. It makes sense, adds conflict, and it's a good streaming.

+Mormont's badassery in his final moments.

Meh.

.The fedexed sourcerer. Not sure where they're going with this, and I'm willing to wait, but it seems too early to show how ruthless Varys can actually be.

.The Craster/NW/Mormont part wasn't bad, but it was only alright. It lacked tension, sadness, and horror.

.Bran's dream. What's the fucking point? Seemed such a waste of screentime. I swear I was expecting that at least Jojen would say "every flight begins with a fall". But no, it seems that wasn't the point of the dream either. We already had a simmilar dream. If they wanted to show Bran, I'd rather have seen an actual interaction between him and Hodor. Or any of the other characters with him. Seemed so pointless.

.Ramsay's reveal. It was a bit soon for my taste? I thought id' have been better if they were both captured together by X men and held in prision for some reek bonding time before the actual truth comes out. That said, that's just my personal preference and the scene wasn't bad.

What I didn't like:
-The pace. It seemed all over the place, very start and stop. There were bits that felt so slow and trudging that my eyes wondered around the room and I started thinking how long will the scene take. This has never happened before to me on first viewing of a game of thrones episode!

-Clunky buildup. All the big moments were so terribly broadcasted that their impact was watered down. You knew what every single character was going to do, and when it actually happened, there it felt... flat. On that note:

-Dracarys. CGI, music, set and costumes was great. The bits where the unsullied were actually killing people, not so great because the scary unsullied seemed a bit... green? Like it was their first time doing it. Anyways, that's a minor issue. The predictability of the scene took away the wow moment, but it could've still worked if it hadn't been so over the top staged. Every shot was so manouvered... And things that could've added a lot felt so theatrical that they pulled you out of the story. Like the way she walks into the sunshine when Jorah aproaches, or the way she throws down the slaver staff and everyone walks on it, the "I'm so badass that I don't look at my dragon burning you" shot. I realize as I write it that it sounds good, it should've been good, but imo it was overly done, and lost impact.

This is not "bad" but... I don't understand the desition to have this part in the middle of the season instead of a season finale, with a more spaced out storyline. Cause let's face it, if they do end up in Mysha, then what? 4 bloody seasons of Mereen? I'd have preferred to carry the rest of the storyline between Dracarys and Mhysa to season 4, but well, that's just a detail.

-Emilia Clarke. That's probably one of the main reasons why Dracarys failed to impress. Her acting seems to be getting worse by the day. There wasn't a single frame where she wasn't showing us her infamous "dead eyes" look. The only plus I have for her, is that Valyrian sounds good in her mouth.

-The heavy handed exposition scenes and the... well, there's no other word, bad writing. This one is the really my main quibble with this episode I guess. Lady Olenna going on and on about the Tyrell sigil, Varys and his maiming (God, Tyrion's lines were cringeworthy and this whole scene felt so contrived! last season I was so looking forward to this reveal and I feel very disappointed on how it was writen), Varys and Ros going on and on about Pod's prowress? WTF? There better be something there cause otherwise it's just plain ridiculous if it is just to overexplain for the umpzillion time all of LF's plans. (On that topic, i still can't understand why they make everything LF so obvious! It was such a great reveal moment in the book, i just can't understand. I hope they're really going somewhere with this.) The Hound/Beric exposition was the best handled but still, it went on for way too long. Then, on paper, you'd think a scene between Varys and Lady Olenna would be mouthwateringly good, but the dialogue was so bad it made them look like two schoolkids. ugh.

Apologies for the length.

ETA to add:

Cake goes for: It's a tie, Natalie and Gwendoline will have to share it.

I definitely don't think the show is getting worse. On the contrary, I've enjoyed S3 more than the first episodes of S2. I think the pacing and the time they spend with each character is becoming a bit of a problem though, with the ever-expanding story. I think that's the main reason why S1 always felt more cohesive, and why we get all up in arms about scenes we feel are pointless. However, if we are to be fair, "pointless" scenes have their part to play in any show, so I try not to get too frustrated because a few minutes could have been better spent somewhere else. I'll wait until the season's over, but so far I think they're handling their time better than S2.
Not that impressed with Alex Graves though. His shots look gorgeous, but like Tir said, sometimes they look too...cosmeticized?

I realy enjoyed this one too ... I'm so pleased they got in the Dany Valerian bit , that was bugging me . I am starting to learn to except the changes and wait to see what happens before bleating , but I'm very confused as to how Sansa can be secretly taken away when everyone knows where LF is going?

"Promise me ... " She said....

You know, I think this is one of those episodes I would have definitely enjoyed more if I hadn't read the books. Not because "it was better in the books", but because of the unexpected, you know?
Anyway, I think that except for the KL scenes, this episode was taken almost entirely out of the books word for word. I think that a lot of my enjoyment of episodes that veer away from the books (because I definitely love those more) comes from just this - the surprises.
Yvy - yeah, same thought crossed my mind. After she escapes from KL, wouldn't it be obvious where she is? Varys would know, Olenna would know...That's why I keep thinking there's gotta be something to it, since they're involving so many characters.

I would love so much to be able to see it with fresh eyes... I can't wait for Mr. Tir to watch it and see how he reacts to it.

About Sansa's location, I agree with ye both. Wouldn't it be to frigging obvious when she disappears in the end? It would be the first place where they'd look for her.

I liked it. I've been especially waiting for Tywin's talk with Cersei, so we can see that he disdains all of his children. Lest the non-book readers believe that Cersei is Daddy's little princess or something. Although I think he could have been more forceful. What are you gonna do?

Seems Willas is out, good I think Sansa gushing over Loras with her broken gay-dar will be hilarous.

Unless Tywinn blocks this move by making Loras Kingsguard. We shall see.

Really, really hoping Jaime gets one hell of a bath soon. He and Brienne couldn't be any dirtier. I think there's a scene that's gonna happen. Although it will be weird if it happens in conjunction with the Jon Ygritte bathing scene.

Jon and Ygritte happens next week, according to the previews. Jaime and Brienne will probably wait until ep. 6.
I'm still amazed at how good these two work against/with each other, they outshine pretty much everything.

Overall the quality of this season impresses, compare the current season to the same episode number last season and it's night and day.

all smart bunnies here so I don´t have to say muchcrackers. I had almost the same problems likings (?) as Macha and Tir with one thing or another but also agree with others (wtf Sansa?). BUT I must say I just couldn´t care less because varys baby!!! cheesedancecheeseVarys more than 10 seconds. Who cares what he´s saying! Who cares! (but yes the Podrick talking was bad writing)

Dany scene yes ugh, too staged but Emilia´s acting is starting to make me laugh. Please, someone help that girl.

Yes Japie non book readers will be crushed to see after season 4 that all Dany does is sit on a pillow and deal with governing issues. All momentum gone.

And gets it on with daario.  Maybe they'll play that up.  Maybe Jorah and Daario will have a catfight, and that's why  Jorah leaves.

Dany doesnt know Ser Jorah spied on her when she was with Drogo...I do think Selmy knows this and can come up later.
Tho the show seems to making them a bro-team already...

I think the plans to have Sansa escape with LF will obviously be scuttled. In season 4 when the PW happens LF will have been away at the Eyrie for ages so no one thinks to implicate him in Joffrey's death so I don't think anyone will be expecting to look for Sansa with him.

I wonder if they'll actually dye Sophie Turner's hair black...

They simply can't, showing an army this BIG. My roommates were all pumped up: "LOOK WHOS GOT A MOTHERFUCKING ARMY NOW, YEAH BITCH" I have complete faith in the showrunners they will not lose the momentum here and send Dany to Westeros at the end of next season or the start of season 5.

Other than the awesome moon door scene where Lysa gets pwnd at the Eyrie, everything was downhill for Sansa from there.
I am sure season 5 will be where GOT goes completely off book....sorry Linda.

Yep, I was thinking this as I was watching it.  They will dangle (no pun intended) Loras in front of Sansa, then throw poor Willas at her and say, "gee, nothing we can do".

Methinks the next candidate will be the final one, Tyrion. Pretty sure the other Tyrell brothers are out for good, since no one has mentioned them yet, not even in passing.

You know what I would have loved for them to keep, in the scene where Sam and Gilly escape? That line about the baby's "brothers" being on their way there. Of course it wouldn't have made much sense since there was nothing pointing to the WW approaching, but I do hope Gilly gets to say that later on.
