Can't wait for this, love these two actors, especially Woody. Read a quick review somewhere that said this:
"Very little happens in the first three hours of this anthology crime series, yet it's absolutely riveting." Sounds like music to my ears. This is just a 1-season thing right?
My initial reaction was that this is nothing special. Then the dialogue between the two protagonists ((Harrelson & McConaughy) really blew me away and I felt more engaged. By episode end I really enjoyed it. Nice to see Lester Freamon and Deadwood a Steve the drunk with roles.

I'm torn! It does look interesting and I'd love to give it a chance but on the other hand... Harrelson and McConaghue... can't stand either of them. So I guess I'll sit on the fence a while longer and see what happens.

Its really good and great cinematography. I don't like the actors either but they are spot on. MM is particularly good. And it has Lester Freamon and Brother Mouzone from the Wire.

I'm all in. This is my kind of television. Will they go all cow-mutilating, pseudo-religious nutjob offerings for the book of revelations, or a frenzied sociopath with daddy issues, or a disgruntled deadbeat ex-cop with an antler to grind, or is this the coming of the Venusians? Cohle's backstory will prove daunting....wtf really happened to his daughter? Something tells me Hart's family is not going to be safe either.
Interesting word puzzles on the show....
Hart & Cohle....get it?
Erath....earth and wrath?

Me neither! Haha, finally, a kindred spirit. Think imma watch this, but I think I'll wait for the whole season to air. It looks like the kind of show that would be better viewed as a whole.
I watched this tonight, and the jury's still out for me. The only aspect of interest really is MM's character. And I like some aspects of Rust, but his nihilism such trendy/pseudo-intellectual BS. I wanted to stick some hipster glasses on him and give him a professorship at Columbia. I'm hoping in the end, MM's journey will live up to the mystique they've created around it. The dialogue's pretty good, and I like the cinematography. I'm not sure I'll keep watching, but I'll check out at least a couple more eps. Oh, and MM looks like hell. What happened to him?
Watched it again last night on HBO GO on my iPad with headphones. Amazing. The music is killer. Haven't been this excited about a cop show since the Wire. This episode is perfect filming. Never heard of the director. Sounds Japanese, and he did a fucking fantastic job.

AMAZING. THIS is how you make a series. This director kills me. So much to see in this one. The last shot was brilliant. Omar, as a filmmaker, you must be loving this.
And Alexandra daddario is sexy as fuck

I'm really curious to see the ratings for this show. Episode five will be at the same time as The Walking Dead's Season 4B premier. Obviously fans of both will still watch both, but I wonder what the effect on ratings will be, since only one can be watched live.
I wholeheartedly agree, Cary. I want my eye candy! MM looks so gaunt though, so he's not an eye candy candidate.

At the bolded: I was shocked! I wonder if he did it specifically for this role or that's how much weight he lost lately.
As for the first ep: I've just watched it and though the premise of the series is overdone on every channel and true crime shows are popping everywhere dark and gritty as they can be, it looks intriguing.
Like Rygar I was impressed with the car dialog script and acting. That seems the most interesting part so far. Lot of exposition and heavy presentation but it is understandable as it was the first episode. I was never of fan of either of the actors but as far as I am concerned they do a pretty decent job so far.
Episode 2 was great. Most of the dialogue was fantastic, even though there were a couple of lines that were so bad they made me cringe. I like the acting. I love the faces Cohles makes when he's deciding how to react to something. Whoever did the casting for this series is brilliant. So yeah, I'm on board.
Just as brilliant as their use of music is their use of silence. They don't have background music for the sake of background music, so when a song starts playing it really grabs your attention.
Rhaegar, despite wounding Robert, was struck down with a massive blow from Robert's warhammer, which scattered the rubies encrusted in Rhaegar's armor under the water. Rhaegar died with Lyanna Stark's name on his lips.
From what I've heard from the Inside the Episodes, a lot of Cohle is all MM. The writer gives him liberties.
I love how Cohle checks his pulse after the locker room confrontation

I love how Woody always sniffs his fingers after that scene

I found it interesting that Cohle mentioned that his past drug use was creating flashbacks during the investigation. But does it "affect" his investigation? The wavy clouds, the blurry, extended night light shots were well done....and my personal fav so far was the swarm birds (bats?) suddenly forming the spiral for an instant before they entered the dilapidated church. I hope they keep it up. I wonder if the "anti-Christian" overtone being put forth is actually a patsy/false front for a morbid cult founded by a predator who preys upon lost, abused souls. How connected is it to the governor or the administration?
MM owns both his before/after persona. Damn good performance so far. Wonder if they'll go further back to his undercover druggie days? What was he like then? I bet his drug use had something to do with his daughter's accident and subsequent coma/death.
I live in a third world country, yet I have never seen such destitute poverty like the folks in the towns in the Tv show.
How about those opening credits? I think I see something new in them everytime!

Unfortunately, there are dilapidated towns/counties like Erath in every state. I'm not surprised at this rural, back-alley depiction at all. Some of my in-laws lived in the heart of such abject trailer park welfare-funded poverty in southern WV. It is not pretty and not too far away from the progressive cities. Unfortunately, in those areas, there are makeshift churches every few hundred yards (not kidding) that take advantage of centuries-old church-oriented federal/state tax loopholes and seem to prey on the meek and uneducated.
This series is getting darker by the episode. Did NOT expect a naked tattooed and gas wearing guy at the end there. I'm not sure I want to see the beginning of the fourth ep now!
That being said: was I the only one I almost yelled Eli!!!!! there in the beginning?! I really miss Broadwalk. And I love the duo dynamic between Rust & Marty. Also: no visions this episode, but I think they will explore that later.
Best meaning charged one line for me: "I like to mown my own lawn." Lines were drawn.
