I found this article particularly interesting and relevant, given that we are a nerd forum that while not dominated by women, we certainly have a higher percentage and are more welcoming to people of the female persuasion than other places. And we often run well over 50% women.
OK, serious answer: I think a lot of men have a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that women like something that is perceived to be a guy thing. Which it isn't and maybe never was. Many assume that women are part of the fandom just to meet boys and have sex with them.

Honestly, it never occurred to me that nerdy or geeky women had anything to prove to anyone or that anyone considered them somehow lesser than their male counterparts. Most of the people I've met think it's cool that I'm into the things I'm into and have been completely welcoming. Unless I'm just completely oblivious, which is possible. I've got to say that the author's comment about women as sports fans having to prove themselves to be considered legit is right on. There are plenty of areas like sports where women aren't accepted as anything but eye candy unless and until they prove themselves to "the boys." I don't think this is one of them.
Geekdom is a very accepting community in general but i've seen plenty of women being called out online with the old "you're only saying that for attention! hur durr!!" but i believe that's more of a consequence of people being shittier on the internet in general and not exclusive to the geek community.
This is a good thread! Hmmm, well, I think it's appearance. There is a falsehood that geeks are unattractive, not fun, shut ins who are not social. I don't think that's true of anyone on here. Some feel that it is a "fantasy" that we aren't "real" and that it's all "make believe" to be a geek or fan on-line. That we are one person on here and something totally different in the "real world". There is always that danger, so to speak. I just prefer to err on the side of trust until I can not. Call me provincial

I treat women sports fans differently than the men. For example, I love college basketball. A lot. When a man says they are a fan of such and such team, we'll casually shoot the shit about it. Unless they are a Duke fan. If a woman indicates a love of a basketball team, I am much more interested. Hear me out! PUT THE KNIFE AWAY! If a woman pledges their allegiance, I know they have a reason and I want to share our fan experiences. If a man pledges their allegiance, they are much more likely to just be a casual fan.
Still sexist, but in a different way.
