"God rest the souls of that poor family... and pussy's half price for the next 15 minutes!" no one gives pussy discount like Al Swearangen. No one.
Don, I think it is one of the best series I've watched. Ever. It's everything, writing, acting, cinematography, you name it. However, it does have an acquired taste to it. Firstly it's a western genre series. It is a dying breed. Many simply don't like the genre. Some don't like the language. And I did know peeps back when it started that simply couldn't stick with it. I guess it IS an acquired taste.
Deadwood got shit for the abundance of "fucks" & "cocksuckers" spoken when it first aired. People were used to Westerns using language that was more polite.
However, Milch is spot on when it comes to how vulgar these camps were in the 1800s.
I admit that I started watching with the captions turned on so I could follow the language used. There were a few scenes before I started doing this where I would think "what the fuck did he just say?".
All of the characters, main and secondary, are PERFECT
Olyphant gets shit for being a wooden board in many of his scenes, but that is the character, not the actor.
I am surprised that Brad Dourif never won any awards for this show. And Keith Carradine is the BEST WILD BILL EVER.
I am watching Season 3 again, such a shame they didnt give it one more season. Need this movie. Need it NOW.

I think that might have been it, I was puzzling out language that I wasnt following the story. I will watch with subs when I try it again.

Donal - JMO, but I wouldn't bother with subtitles. One can glean the general meaning of any unfamiliar phrases from the context (I honestly don't recall any feeling of being lost), and I think it's just better to let that sort of thing go and let the story take over.
I watched it the first time years ago, but only after a few people with very different backgrounds and tastes told me I absolutely must watch it. They were well aware how I hate westerns (really, I just won't watch 'em ... can't stand 'em), but all promised me I would find it worth my time. They were right.
As far as the movie goes, I'm guessing losing Powers Boothe put a big wrench in the script.

I always thought that it was obvious and couldn't understand that complaint. It's in the rigid way he walks, the tension in his features when pushed too far. I remember when he delivered the beating to Alma's father. It was like a spring, a coil suddenly unwind with the force of entire being behind it. I loved his Seth.
