Macha ,Re: Qwentyn Tarrrantino is not my favorite director either. His work received praises by many but they did not suit me. I have only seen bits and pieces of his earlier work ( Pulp Fiction )and did not take notice until Kill Bill 1 & 2( rented on dvd ). I was truly impressed with that pair.
I'm glad this Topic has proven useful. You guys have in common several fine film works that you appreciate.
" Janne Eyre" must be perfunctory reading worldwide. I'd seen the Orsen Wells version , but prefer William Hurt's version and Micheal Fassbender's recent version a bit more..
What do you guys think of Mark Strong ? What a voice and swagger to match. He was brilliant in several productions but " Rockinrolla " put him on the map for me.
I'm a big Tom Wilkinson fan ( also in Rockinrolla ) for so many varied roles , he's a chameleon and superb acting in cutting edge categories. I would imagine him as a major feudal lord in Westeros if not king.
Hey , who gave lady YvB permission to get a beautiful new avatar ??!!!! must E-X-T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-E.

It was a great idea Wildseed.
I don´t like Tarantino either but "Reservoir dogs" is great.
Mark Strong is such a good actor. I have seen him in many movies. His performance in Body of lies is great.

Just to remember this: "Raba lyubvi" (La esclava del amor - The slave of love). Nikita Mikhalkov. :)

There are NO words to describe my love for Nikita. "Burnt by the sun." is still my favorite, but I have seen and loved all of his films. It's impossible not to love them, they're so full of passion, and pain, and tenderness. And music, R'hllor, the music!
did I understood a russian word? guitaro??? and he´s playing the guitar! Is Mikhalkov, isn´t he? Oh, I didn´t remember this... Joyful people! (when they are not tragic). That language, that language.

I place my movies into two categories: Stallone and Non Stallone.
Not really although I do love the Rocky films. Except 5 which doesn't exist in this dojo or Daniel LaRussos.
I can see how Tarrintino can be tiresome but I love him nonetheless. His foot fetish scenes are a bit much. But I love his homages to Sergio Leone. Which brings me to...
....My love of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Probably my favorite "epic" of all time. You can not get
any better than an Ennio Morricone soundtrack and a very handsome Clint.
I do love Wes Anderson films. Bottle Rocket, Royal Tenenbaums, and Life Aquatic particular. I am very excited to see PT Anderson's The Master. Love his Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood. Genius.
But if push comes to shove, my all time favorite is Harold and Maude. No othe film has changed my life as much as that one and I am not saying that it made me want to have sex with my grandma. It helped me through a pretty tough break up and made me appreciate the beauty in all the things, regardless of how sad or tragic. And it exposed me to a deeper appreciation of Cat Stevens' music. "Trouble" still brings a tear to the eye.
Oh and porn. I love porn.

I hope I have a bit of ( daring outrageous spirit ) Ruth Gordon when I approach her age. She inspired me as others did
to challenge and embrace life . I wonder what happened to that teen she traveled with ? Her dramatic roles
were intriguing, ever see " Rosemary's Baby " ?
Cat Stevens is sharing his passion for music within his religious faith. For now I only know of his classics.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly " and " A fistfull of dollars " are classics. I can still whistle the intro. Lee van Cleef

Yes, it was me in the chat. I have no words to express how much I love it, every bit of it. I probably know it by heart. I'm a huge Peter O'Toole fan and coupled with Hepburn and that script...

" Never Let Me Go" - liked it, but thought the book was better. " The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas " - oh how I loved that, I cried and I cried and...*sigh* " Everything is Illuminated " is a small gem, I loved it as well, made me laugh. " The Last King of Scotland " - some great acting there, I have to re-watch it sometime.
Did someone mentioned today "The Lyon in Winter? it was you Macha? the script!! the script!! brilliant

Wow, I never met another Death to Smoochy fan before!
Agree with Andrea, not a Tarantino fan here, but Reservoir Dogs is good.

I started watching never let me go like 20 minutes in, fuck it was disorientating until I finally realized it's an alternate dimension of history. Boy in the Striped PJ's was good, then again anything with David Thewlis is good, seriously underrated actor.
Anyone watch Dragonheart with Denns Quaid and Sean Connery?

I have seen it Aegon. I don't remember much so it must not have been that good. Lol. Dennis Quaid was my first choice as Ned, until I saw Sean Bean's Boromir. I would love for DQ to be Roland in the Dark Tower adaptation. Ever see Dragonslayer? I still have a crush on the girl in that film. Not the princess, the one who posed as a boy. Oh shit, maybe that's why I am so confused??? It all goes back to Dragonslayer. :)

A woman also loved "The Last King of Scotland," wasn't McAvoy delicious in that movie? Wow. I don't think he's topped that since. However, current favs are of the martial arts/action/kung fu variety, especially recently the "Ip Man" series with Donnie Yen and "14 Blades" which he also stars in. Can watch those over and over. Love the older ones as well, like "Enter the Dragon," "Wing Chun" and all the "Matrix" movies. Those look so good on the new tv screens, mesmerizing. Interesting, a woman cannot think of any recent dramas that were worthy of recommendation, but does generally love other types of films also. Went to see "Hope Springs" but found it fairly predictable, only saved by the acting genius of Meryl Streep. Still, one has seen her do that role over and over lately so it was nothing new for her. Interested to see what anybody from here says about "The Master," as I'm hesitant to spend the bucks on going out to the theatre when so much is available at home unless it's a STELLAR movie.

I've only seen the Matrix but I learned there was a sequel filmed not far from San Francisco 's East Bay ciities.
Do you " Bruce Lee " too ? Deforest Whittaker won a well deserved Oscar for the portrayal of Idi Amin. It was
surreal with reports of Ugandiennes waving on as if he had been reincarnated. I read of similar reports when
Ben Kingsley portrayed " Ghandi ". I was also surprised to see sparkle a younger Kerry Washington and Gillian
Anderson. James McAvoy hit it out of the park in his role too, he came up a few notches on my list.
I may have mentioned it before but Matthew Broderick in " Master Harold and the Boys ", a play by Athol Fugard set to film is one of my long term favorites.

Yes, a woman mentioned "Enter The Dragon," Bruce Lee's best (IMO) and last completed film before he died, LOVE HIM! Whittaker is so good, sad to see that he can't keep a TV series going for long though. Really liked his series last year but it only lasted 1 season. Don't think McAvoy has had another role that good since "Last King..." and would like to see him in another great drama.
A woman is hoping that there will be some martial artists incorporated into the sellsword companies or the Dornish, it would be a waste to NOT tap into the wealth of great weapons experts that would take the fighting scenes up a notch.
I love this movie, is not just fantasy. Says something very interesting about women and intuition. And is one of the few stories about hero´s myth where the main character is a woman. And her "path" it´s through a labyrinth because the myth says that can only be decrypted by intuition, hence... a woman.

I've seen it! Couldn't remember it by title, but when you mentioned the actors it came to me. Haaa, Roxy Music. Rygar, you surprise me. I like Roxy Music a lot, but haven't listened to any of their songs in a while now.

Had my IPod on random shuffle on my way to work today. The song "2HB" by Roxy Music came on. This made me think of the movie "Velvet Goldmine" as this song is featured in it, but it is sung instead by Thom Yorke of Radiohead. Not sure if anyone one has seen this movie. Aegon, I am sure you have not. It is pretty much based off of the life of David Bowie and his Ziggy Stardust character and the whole Glam Rock phase, where sexual androgyny was the 'in' thing. Ewan McGregor plays the "Iggy Pop" character and a youthful Christian Bale plays a reporter covering the story of the life of this David Bowie character played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers (of Tudors fame). I must warn you, there is quite a bit of mano a mano love through out. And there is full frontal Ewan (as always). Obi Wan Disrobi indeed. I like the movie because of the style of music it covers. I repeat again (Aegon), I am not gay. :)
