Maestar Aemon's "prophecy"

Right before he died, Maester Aemon told Samwell (hold your tears):

"my brother's dream...Lady Melisandre has misread the signs. Stannis...Stannis has some ofthe dragon blood in him, yes. His brothers did as well. Rhaelle, Egg's little girl, she was how the came by it... their father's mother...she used to call me Uncle Maester when she was a little girl. I remembered that, so I allowed myself to hope... perhaps I wanted to... we all deceive ourselves, when we want to believe. Melisandre most of all, I think. The sword is wrong, she has to know that... light without heat... an empty glamor... the sword is wrong, and the false light can only lead us deeper into darkness, Sam. Daenerys is our hope. Tell them that at the Citadel. Make them listen. They must send her a maester. Daenerys must be counseled, taught, protected. For all the years I've lingered, waiting, watching, and now that the day has dawned I am too old. I am dying, Sam."

I find it highly unlikely that GRRM would serve us Azor Ahai on a platter as early as AFfC. So Aemon's speculation on Dany being Azor Ahai is useless to me, personally. I find Aemon's dying words to remind us the fact that Azor Ahai is expected to be someone with Targaryen blood, and that Stannis had a bit from his..grandmother? Yes, I think Rhaella was Steffon's mother. But not much else. Which is a pity, because I initially thought we would learn more of the tragedy at Summerhall through him.

Rhaelle, Rhaella's aunt, was Steffon's mother via an "unknown" Baratheon.

I would caution dismissing the old man's words too easily. There may yet be some worth to them.

Aemon is right on several things here , the sword is wrong ... Mel is just interpreting the flames to make them fit , however, Aemon is not aware of Jon's parentage , that he is from the right gene pool . That Mel see's him in the flames when asking for Stannis ... the dreams Jon has had about his red sword ....

Yeah this is very much worth mentioning. In the other Topic and enclosed threads of " Greensight and Prophetic

Dreams...." I mentioned maester Aemon because he possessed a trait many Targaryeons had. To the Brothers of

the Night's Watch he is perceived very wise. His comments about Mel were very astute.

For me the fact he's serving us Daenerys' name is a nail in her prophetic coffin. I know he could be toying with us that way, but spelling out who the prophecy was talking about kind of kills the climax, if it was to be true.

Yes, I agree with you Y, on this.  Mayhaps Stannis has the legit. right to the throne, however, he is not Azor Ahai reborn, IMO.  I think that Dany fits into this equation somehow, just not sure how and to what extent.

I agree that this may not be a prophecy, but certainly represented an insightful recollection by Aemon, of a family

member whom did have the gift (of prophecy ). Aemon Targaryeon may have demonstrated to his fellow

brothers at the Wall, his wisdom and perhaps an inclination or sensitivity to things to come. His family shared this

gift of dreamsight or prophecy as referenced in ASOIAF  and verified directly within Dunk and Egg Tales. To

bad we didn't get to have Aemon a little longer, we were introduced to him as an old man since Jon met him.

I like Aemon, and this topic makes for a good Speculation Thread, but this is not a thread about Prophecies.

If Cary interpreted Aemon's last words as a prophecy, he can name his topic any way he likes, and we can all debate that. But if this was about the topic not being in the right place - it is. This category is called "Prophesies and Speculation".

Too bad my entire response didn't count.

Cary, is there another text or place of reference for Aemon's insight ( or perspective ) on this? It seems very

interesting that GRRM only made us aware of his collective thoughts only now. I truly miss Aemon, there are

many clues or insights that he takes to the grave. Maybe Samwell and that Pate guy from the Citadel will

give us more to think about with the next book.

I sucks about Aemon.  I was hoping the same about Sam, that he would get all the notes, books, scrolls, library, etc. from Aemon eventually.
