Seeing how we have quite a few Tolkien fans among us who are eagerly waiting for the premiere in November, I thought it'd be nice for us to have a new playground.
I am so excited for this movie! I started reading LOTR again last night! I mean the movies introduced me to the books which in turn introduced me to fantasy. People's eyeballs would pop from their head when they saw this little skinny (yes I used to be very skinny) kid sitting with this big ass book, ignoring the world and just reading. The fact that there will now be three films excites the hell out of me as there are things in the Appendices I have always wanted to see. BTW I discovered mention from Viggo that a scene where he and Arwen met for the first time when Aragorn's twenty was filmed but never released, New Line you bastards!

I know Tolkien better than GRRM but like GRRM better. I have read all of Tolkiens works almost every year for the past 15 years. Very excited for this film and for the entire Hobbit trilogy. I will not let my love of the books ruin it like I did for the LOTRs.

Same here. I've been reading Tolkien and playing games related since whenever. I had to prove my Nerd status,
but I never felt as fulfilled as I do with GRRM. Tolkien wrote other stuff too, literature works, but I had no recall
of those ( read them moons ago ).
I'm looking forward to the " Hobbit ". Peter Jackson is masterful at visual storytelling , he made a beautiful effort of
" Lord of the Rings" ( even with the slight revision ). I always liked Bilbao, although I cannot remember why, probably
because of his Hobbit status ( it's been ages since I read the book ). It would be interesting to note why I cared
for him at all. Gollum's story will certainly gain attention, hope Andy Serkis realizes the movie isn't about him tho.
I disagree about PJ's vision and was actually super excited to see Del Toro's version, but alas, "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again". The Simarillion is my fav of Tolkiens work. It just needs some polishing and it could have been the greatest fantasy novel ever. It reads too much like a text book. But thats part of its charm for me.
We need ugly dwarves in the Hobbit. We are not getting them! Armitage should be Bard. PJ NEEDS NINA GOLD!!!

Tried to read the "Silmarillion" but couldn't. Too much, who begot who, who is related to who, who birthed who, could not get into it.

I still remember the horror when I knew what the orcs really were.

I loved the LOTR films, but I do wonder how such a small book warranted 3 films, Jackson tends to be a bloated director when he goes unchecked ( remember his King Kong film? ), I hope for the best, I really do....but we'll see.

The LotR trilogy also introduced me to the realm of fantasy. After that it was the Harry Potters. This might sound strange but it is as if Tolkien prepared me for GoT, in terms of the complexity of fantasy. I was was sixteen when the trilogy came out and 25 when GoT (tv series) came out. And in both instances I was ready for each story. I appreciated both at that time and needed both creatively and psychologically when each came out at that period of my life. Now seems like a good time to return to Tolkiens mythology, so yeah, will definitely go and see it.
I used to read the appendices like a story book, Aegon. Maybe we should go see The Hobbit together ;)
The Silmarillion rocks, I couldn't appreciate it at first, but gave it a try again when I was older. It's just great background and easy to lose yourself in it once it grabs you.

“Fear is a strange soil. It grows obedience like corn, which grow in straight lines to make weeding easier. But sometimes it grows the potatoes of defiance, which flourish underground.”
He is adding Gandalfs sub plot that was ommitted from the Hobbit novel and found in the LOTR appendices. There will probably be back story and tie in with the Dwarves of Moria, etc. I think 3 is excessive, but there is enough source material to do it. I hope the films are shorter in running time as well.

Yes Rygar otherwise the 3D will kill my eyes! Mags that actually a big possibility, another friend of mine in PTA is also a huge fan and we've been talking of going to watch it together for a long time. Started listening to the Silmarillion audio book, it is so beautifully written and intriguing, I love it! It does read like a historic text book which makes me love it all the more! Rygar you ever read the Children of Hurin? Also I jumped up and down from joy when Del Toro dropped out.

Aegon, I'll hold you to it then :) I've even thought that we should round up people next year and have a GoT season 3 premiere celebration thingy and then write a report about it for WiC.

Well I've been commissioned to write reviews for wicgeeks from a reader's perspective. But why not I'd drive to PTA for that. I just don't have too many GOT friends though.

Aegon, I have quite a few GoT friends, most of them female and they all read the books now :) You are more than welcome to come to pretoria. The review writing sounds great, good luck with that.

Aegon, yup :) It started with me and one friend, she's already finished all of them, then the others started falling in. Kit/Jon is of course quite a motivating factor, but at least it didn't stop there for most of us :) we're all busy with our Masters, more or less, so yeah, we appreciate the more intellectual stuff. But, nothing to feel threatened by, becauae the same girls watch Twilight and rugby too, lol.

Well, that's flattering to know, thanks! Ag, we're actually a little over twilight, ever since Got came into our lives. But I've a feeling I'll be dragged along to the cinema come november, or whatever. But before you rip into twilight, my one friend is doing her masters in History and tourism about the town of Forks where the story plays off, by looking at the impact the whole phenomenon is having on the town historically and economically from a literary tourism perspective. Oh, she had a hard time proving herself to her supervisor and had to hand in quite a long proposal though.

Hahaha I hate Twilight! Think it is an offense to vampires, authors and fantasy alike and stab at the intelligence of most folk. But that;s just me. Yes but that's a story for another time, ask me in a year.

Har! Fine, I'll ask you in a year's time. The problem is using fantasy proper to shove sentimentalized unrealistic expectations of romance down teenage girls' throats and they buy it. Nity nite.

Exactly why I have a problem with Twilight, when I was in matric my gf at them time started comparing me to Edward, needless to say the relationship did not last long.

So am I YvyB, so am I, always and forever.
Aegon, I'm not even team Edward, Jasper and Carslisle's love stories were so much more interesting anyways but you sound like you were a little hard on her. She was probably just trying to give you a compliment, in her mind :) but you obviously didn't take it a such.

It wasn't just once, it was all...the...time! THe road goes ever on and one, down from the door where it began. No far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow if I can.

I was a Twihard then I became a GoT geek ... tho back on topic ... I'm already a Hobbiton :D
Same with me, Y!! Small world. Was totally team Jacob, love the wolves. However, got a hold of GOT and mine eyes were opened

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead. How many LoTR of Hobbit references are in Led Zeppelin songs?
Ramble on???

ah that´s hard... do I have to think about it? I know Plant used to read mythology for inspiration. Literal references? This could be about Aragorn: "And now's the time the time is now/ To sing my song./I'm goin' 'round the world,/I got to find my girl, on my way. I've been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,/Gotta find the queen of all my dreams." Got no time to for spreadin' roots,/The time has come to be gone./And tho' our health we drank a thousand times, It's time to ramble on. I ain't tellin' no lie./Mine's a tale that can't be told,/My freedom i hold dear;/How years ago in days of old/When magic filled the air,/
AND
T'was in the darkest depths of mordor I met a girl so fair, But gollum, and the evil one crept up And slipped away with her. Her, her....yea. Ain't nothing i can do, no.

Not directly Hobbit related, but still LotR. I briefly studied the old elvish language Quenya, used by the High Elves. I managed to learn the Quenya Tengwar(alphabet), and the correct placement of vowels and punctuation. So, although I can not write the elvish language, I can write english words and sentences using the Quenya style and alphabet. To demonstrate I have taken seven user names from this thread. Apologies to those not chosen, but I could only fit seven on the page. I will consider requests though. The font is one I am like, I can also do a similar font to that used on the One Ring. 1. Macha 2.Wild Seed 3.Andrea 4.Lyanna Stark 5.YvyB....... I have written your full name Yvs, as your user name is rather short.........:) 6.Rygar 7.Aegon the Conqueror.
Really cool! Request, my real name is Gerhard, would love to see how that looks. You have more perseverance than I. I studied Tolkien for 7years like a mad man, but could never bring myself to study the Elven languages.

As requested Aegon. This is your full name in a couple of different fonts. Looks pretty cool, don`t you think? Sorry its a bit scruffy, my calligraphy skills are very rusty.
