You´d say Where the wild things are is an under the radar movie? Whatever, I loved it too. I guess the ones that bitch about it are book readers?

Not sure where to post this but I guess this animations are under the radar, a pitty because this one it´s beautiful. I don´tappreciateanalogies that much because they are usually pretty simple but in this case I didn´t care. Such beautiful drawings, you love them all at the very first moment. Many paintors you can recognize in some of the characters (Modigliani, Gauguin, Picasso).
Wow, i studied this movie with pupils recently (very rich because it allows to study painting's history and social segregation), it's funny you discovered this little jewel Andrea, because even in France it's kind of a rarity.
The director made other beautiful things, as the Black Moor Island wich i recommand.

KC it´s hard to believe that noone knows about it because french animation is very very good. I didn´t discovered it tho, someone told me to watch if i`m not mistaken. Will check this director because I loved The tableau, I rrrreally love animation and I´d love to know about your teaching with this beauty!
Have lot more french animation to watch in my list (I don`t really have a list but you know). Not easy to find these little gems tho. Tell me if some title rings a bell for you: "Les enfant de la Pluie" and "Peurs du noir". Grrr now I realize I lost some others titles.

French animation is really improving, i totally agree with that. Besides Laguionie (who made le tableau), we have Michel Ocelot, to me his masterpiece is a movie called "Princes and princesses", a little jewel, very delicate and poetic. Persépolis is a great story too, wrote and drawn by an iranian who became iconic in France, Marjane Satrapi. One of the Laguionie's teacher was a director named Paul Grimault who realized wich we consider as a national treasure, Le roi et l'oiseau. I used le tableau with pupils because the school where i teach is part of a national project , "Collèges au cinéma", the goal is to allow french pupils to discover major films from many countries (this year it was a western, le tableau and a musical from Mali). Pupils see the film and then we discuss about it and work on it, we are very modest since our pupils are still quite young but we talk about camera effects, writing a scenario, social and historical context of production, technical stuff about animating a movie, actor's parts and the way the film is or has been promoted (materials, wich audience is targeted...). It's a way to discover the history of cinema too and to deal with social problems or working on the movie's main theme . With Le Tableau, it was of way for me and my coworkers who worked on it, to talk about social segregation, social equality and social reproduction (in a very light way, our pupils are 12-13-11 years old). It was also a way to make them discover the painters the movie refers to, Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Canaletto...

this you do and national project are so great KC, so great. Those kids are lucky.
I´ll check all those animations you mentioned if i can find them. From all of them the only one I know is Persepolis.
Ah and was Japie the one who told me about Le Tableau and Ernest et Celestine which I loved, very dearly.

Ernest and Celestine is great and adorable, one of my daughter's favourite, good choice lady !
You can also give a try to "Le roi et l'oiseau", absolute classic here and to "Le chat du rabbin" by Joan Sfar, one of our more famous cartoonist (he did the movie about Serge Gainsbourg).

watched Everyday today. Has sad moment but is also not dramatic (if that makes sense), very quiet and realist and there´s lots and lots of little precious details. Sometimes it feels like peeking through the keyhole in someone elses life. Some really wonderful little scenes between... all of them, the 4 wonderfull kids, John Simm and Shirley Henderson. Loved them all.
Something happened to me while watching it tho... felt like something really bad would happen at any moment. Then there´s very pretty shots, landscapes and you breathe again. Winterbottom () directed so you could think that it will be more political or much more realist and critical but this is just a love story (all kinds of love). A very beautiful love story to me.

Watched "Le Week-End", amazing married old farts. No idea why it say romantic comedy because is not (you´ll laugh here and there tho) and certainly is not for pink romatincs but for love love. I don`t know what that means but I bet you know. Acting is delicious.
There´s one scene I just... so awkard and awesome, Broadbent is god there.
You need to be in some kind of mood, idk what kind. I loved it.

Chuskita I know you talked about "nymphomaniac", the Lars von Triers movie but can´t remember where. This fucking viking..., didn´t know all the wonderful actors the movie has, but won´t watch his shit anymore. You finish it?
I won´t watch, not even for Stellan Skarsgard

I love Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent! Will definitely watch this one.
Yes, I watched Nymphomaniac but I don't think I wrote about it here. It would have just been a long rant on the kind of shit director Von Trier is, and I'm tired of paying him attention.
Update: andi, where did you find this gem? It was beautiful! God, I burst out crying like an idiot at the dinner scene.
those smelly places I know.
Yes, exactly that scene I was talking about. Amazing.

Watched this "Whitewash" . I love the actor (and he brings funny to everything) and the movie is mostly just him and a good script and great acting. Ugh the other character, good god, can´t say a thing because spoiler but... boy.
Very interesting movie.

I´m quoting myself but after this movie I can only do that. Can´t say much now just that at some point I said I hate these characters... I can´t hate it more and a bit later I was laughing at them. I think after I saw that wall in Adam´s house, with the pictures of all the people he respects or adore. And the music, of course, it felt like watching Nick Cave all over again, singing in "Der Himmel über Berlin" (talking about snobs but I just don´t know the name in english, in spanish was Las alas del deseo). I think that hit me. You two are ridiculous. Really? that was funny. That wall was so funny: first I saw was Joe Strummer (well, I´d have one of him), Poe, Kafka, Bach I think, Billie Holliday... I think even a young Iggy Pop. Come on, excuse moi you undead hipster snobs vampires full of shit.
I´m still thinking "what was that?". I think he´s laughing at himself, Dr. Faust, Dr Caligari (he´s fan of german expressionism), Dr Watson, Fibonacci, Adam and Eve, Basquiat, Mefisto, even Ramón de Campoamor!!! The books in the fridge, hahahaha. This movie is a joke. I love this guy too much to think he did this movie and his intention was not laughed at his life and the world or whatever. This is the comedy he can make, and is just bad. "You drank Ian, you drank Ian". The gloves, the use of the words awesome and misterious and great all the time. Uhg god, so horrible to be real. Is just a experiment. I rather think that.
There´s things he likes everywhere. The woman singing in Tanger (wow) seemed like an arabic PJ Harvey. The amanitas!!! if i`m not mistaken Jarmusch is a fan of mushroom. WUT,
Ugh, I`m still confused. He´s a Hollywood renegado but he loves genre and he also loves to "destroy" genre in his movies, play with them, as he did with western and samurais movies. I guess this was his way of playing with horror-gothic-comedy.... shit?
I saw it as an autobiography or satire of himself and his life.
"There´s a gigantic diamond in the heart of a planet or as big as a planet in some constellation, that makes the sound of a gigantic gong. COME ON. I
I´m just puking bs now. It was very confusing and tedious for a moment and is not the Jarmusch I like but I don`t think is shit. Let´s fight

LMAO, how can I fight you when you write hilarious things like this?
Yes, you say experiment but that's what Jarmusch always does (hmm, maybe not so much with Broken Flowers) and sometimes what comes out is fantastic and has meaning, multiple meaning but you can find them and there is a certain aesthetic that makes sense. And some of his experimental work has measure, and that's why it succeeds. This movie is just all over the place, and feels too much like a compilation. To me it seemed like he lost track of what he was doing, and not just with this movie. The Limits of Control, his previous film, was the first time he bore me to tears, really. I can only take so much nonsensical dialogue before I think "hey, time is precious, I don't need this in my life". And it pisses me off, because I used to love this man but to me it feels that his obsessions are getting too much in the way of his work. Like Burton, and others.
Macha wrote:Yes, you say experiment but that's what Jarmusch always does (hmm, maybe not so much with Broken Flowers)...

... it feels that his obsessions are getting too much in the way of his work.
and with Night on Earth.
I think that I said too, is a compilation of Jarmusch dearest and stupidest things. I hope.
Probably yes, I want to think he tried to laugh at that in this movie. I need to watch more new movies to decide.
Oh, and still didn´t watch The limits of control. We suck at fighting.

Sorry Andi for the late comment, the tv show is a very poetic and absurd thing and even if it is not aired anymore, it knew quite a success.
My best friend is an absolute fan and she bought the whole serie to my daughter who likes them very much. Each episode is a tiny 7 minutes film if i remenber correctly and mixes "real images " with 3D animation bugs, i'm found of the spider ! ( i don't think that was a very enlightning post... But now ya know i like the spider... )

Yus Macha! watched "I served the king of England", czech movie and I`m truly wondering if W. Anderson stole from this movie. Apparently both movies are adaptations from different novels but... ya know, the coincidences are too big. Even the Sudetes! This one is so much better tho.
Didn´t love it but it´s a rrrreally charming movie. Only gripe: the reasonable old man (same Jan Diten) musing about his life was not necessary, he´s thinking for the viewer and that´s silly but I enjoyed the movie very much! Lol the actor, all of them.

Somebody said Scarlett Johansson butt nekkid all the time??? HAVE to watch that moview, NOW.
For artistic curiosity, of course. I mean, because of the acting and stuff...
I heard that a lot of the Under The Skin stuff was shot guerrilla style with strangers being totally unaware they were featuring in a movie. It's suppose to be a fascinating movie, not just because Scarlet goes full frontal

I know Macha and Jap were talking about The Guard in some thread (thought it would be here but nop). I don`t know how I missed it because I love Brendan Gleeson.
This movie will make you laugh and you will find yourself giggling all the time and I bet you´ll have a really silly face during the whole thing. There´s so many one liners you can´t just quote one, so many tiny hilarious scenes. Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Fionnula Flanagan ( I adore this woman and her oneliners were purrfect), D. Wilmot. All of them. Wonderful comedy.
In this screencap he only said one word and I couldn´t stop laughing for minutes.
And this is just a painting. Looky the mark the socks left in his delicious chubby legs

So, Calvary, yay. Not a comedy like The guard. Black humor tho, here and there. Mc Donagh is another misanthrope not Nick Pizzolatto (TD) style tho... I think. How many ways to hate human kind are?
Father Lavelle fucking hates people and he doesn´t trust us, not a wee bit. Loved it
So many wonderfully over the top characters. Little Leo just one of them Oh, Milo. There´s many.
"You seem agitated" must be one of the best one liners I heard. You can say many things about Brendan Gleeson but you can´t say that.
Littlefinger is there! lol Aidan Gillen, even his irish accent is weird. Trolilol, he can´t lose LF for some reason. I miss his Carcetti really.
- "Your church is on fire"
- "Fuck off, I`m not in the mood".
I wonder if Mc Donagh also writes the dialogues.
Sartre said "El infierno son los otros" ( Idk how to translate this) and this movie is saying it all the time. They are devils tho... I guess we all are Sowy Cary. I wonder if you´d like this movie. Is not your religion I know but you might enjoy how stupid the bishop and the other priest are (well, not just that).
This is terrible spoiler but have to share it
Spoiler
Ugh Bruno and Brendan Gleeson crying
hahahaah Chuskita, the romanians always get some with this director!
Some shots when he´s on the phone with his daughter, so pretty and
One last thing that surprised me very very much. Song at the end is a very very argentinian "vidala", (music from my country´s northern provinces), wrote by Rolando Valladares. Vidalas are very sad btw, natives inca-descendent music probably, not entirely sure and too lazy to check now.
ETA: lordy the horrible typos and grammar, sorry

Watched La belle et la bête today. I was very excited at the beginning, the cinematography, some scenes, shots, some acting, directing and editing and it looked so goddamn pretty. Everything. And then, idk what happened, all went too cold, the acting very disconnected, the dialogues sounded fake. Weird because they are all great actors. Lea Seydoux is cold but at first thought that was good for the story, to avoid the corny and blahblah, but then was more than cold, was austictic, idk still can´t put my finger on it.
But yes, very pretty till the end. Aesthetically is veeeeeeeery girly. I liked it (Tir I think you´ll love some scenes).

I wouldn't go as far as calling Gone Girl under the radar, it's David fucking Fincher! Al still needs to find his feet in this thread.
Ok, watched some movies on a channel that has to compete with HBO since two years and has basically lost all the rights for big Hollywood productions so it's basically one big "Under the Radar" channel.
Short Term 12 : a movie about a facility for children who can't live with their parents for some reason, with a very good performance of Brie Larson. Great characters and not as fucking depressing as you'd normally expect with such a subject, still not a comedy though.
Prince Avalanche : Paull Rudd and Emile Hirsch in a weird kind of way funny bromance movie, working together on a road in the 1980's I believe. Hirsch got a little fatty for this role (compared to all his previous starvating characters), which already made the movie good for me.
Taiwan Oyster : this movie I really liked, Taiwan roadtrip! Yank-expats in Taiwan are going to bury their colleague who died trying to jump from a roof to a balcony. Fun story, okay acting, great cinematography, good music, not too much dramatic bullshit. Highly recommended, though I am a big sucker for roadtrip movies.
Not under the radar but i dont know where else to post this. Just watched L'exerciceDeL'état and is a great movie following a french minister during a crisis. Also watche el secreto de sus ojos, right in the feels man.
Dolan, I loved that Campanella movie! Good drama and I am a bit partial to Ricardo Darin. I also recommend Nine Queens with Darin, Gaston Pauls and Bredice.

I watched that the other day it's fantastic! Kaitlin Dever was also superb. Almost didn't recognize the dude from The Newsroom because of his beard.

Oh shit it was Loretta from Justified!!!! That girl is so fucking good . Also didn't recognize the dude from the Newsroom, but only saw the first season of that and his beard in this was perfection.
Has anyone seen Filth? that movie is insane! James McAvoy gives a performance of a lifetime in it. I also found it really funny, not surprising given it's an Irvine Welsh adaptation.
