I started watching season 4 tonight. Got my first sheeeeeeeeit from Senator Davis. That guy is fantastic. As always, it's incredibly well-written and witty. I'm having a little trouble getting into it, but I know the first couple of episodes are just to familiarize viewers with the lay of the land for the season.
This is the best damn show on television ever. And I never thought I'd say that about a cop show.
"I´d not prolongued the chewing up, Doc. Nor the being spat out. Not go out a cunt. It´s the dispatch I find inglorious. The whole delusory fucking self importance.". Al Swedgin ;).
Oh thank goodness. That guy's a dbag. But BUNNY, of course he's perfectly lovable. Who couldn't love those dimples? He was around in S3 though. I assumed it was a new S4 character. Bunny's the best.
Season 4 is really good. The alternative classroom, the kids each dealing with their own heartbreaking issues, Prez trying to teach. It's a nice change.
This domesticated McNulty thing can't last. People like him can go for a change of pace for a while, but they never really change. Poor Beadie's gonna get her heart broken. That's what this season has really departed from. The Kima and McNulty family scenes have been abandoned.
One thing that's different from previous seasons is there's a lack of focus on the police angle. There isn't really a team or a clear-cut target. I'm wondering if they're going to pull it together somehow before the end of the season, or if this season is really just about schools and city hall.
I am still very early, and I am embarrassed I don't know everyones name yet.
Just saw the scene where one of the drug dealers is explaining to his colleages the game of chess, while at the same time using the chessgame as a perfect analogy for the drug trade.
Amazing writing right there!

I finished Season 4 today. It felt an awful lot like Season 3 of GoT. Just moving all the pawns to the right position for the next season. I liked it, but it lacked the focus of previous seasons.
Don, I'm so thrilled you're watching and enjoying it! And yes, it takes half the season to figure out who's who.
The beeper codes was such a great catch, I loved it. Was it Prez who figured it out?
@BaS - it was hard for S4 to top S3, especially after Omar and Stringer's storylines. But for me it ended up being my favorite season simply because it focused on the school, and I loved seeing that brought into attention, and also because it established Marlo's character, which actually makes you think "ugh you know, compared to this little shit, Avon and Stringer weren't such bad guys after all". And that is great writing right there.

Truth, Macha. S3 was amazingly good. I was bummed when there were no more episodes. Lol. S4 had it's own charms, to be sure. I liked the different angle, but there didn't seem so be a driving force. And yes, Marlo is unbelievably bad. And yet believable. Lol.
Brilliant. That is so well done...the sound, the options. My favorite is the battle with The System. And Don, you can watch the first minute and a half without spoilers. I didn't watch the end because I've just started Season 5, so I'll revisit this next week.
Ry remind me, who is the team's leader or commander in the first and second season? Was it Rawls? I really can't remember.
S2 had one of the best ending scenes/montage in the whole series for me, really loved it.

The same for me, season 4 is my favourite because i'm an "education worker" and that it nails it so often. Even if my pupils are now little "country bourgeois" i used to teach in very violent suburbs near Paris and the Baltimore teacher room sounded so true that i couldn't believe my eyes the first time i saw this season.

The Wire is in HD, never actually thought it would happen and never was a fan of it. Here is Simon's thoughts about it: davidsimon.com/the-wire-hd-with-videos/ . I however will always keep fighting the people who can't stand black bars on their tv .
My plan to get up in the middle of the night and not sleep every other night has worked wonderfully so far. and thus I have watched in the dead of the night the pilot for The Wire! I liked it. The opening really killed it. The story of how they'd let the dead guy shoot crap and steal their money even if they knew it will happen EVERY TIME because: this is America... so true. Idris Elba. Wow did not know he's in it. So far so good.
I finally got around to watching The Wire.
I certainly enjoyed it, and I don't usually enjoy cops shows.
I don't understand, however, the comments about it being one of the best shows ever.
Maybe that's my general bias against cop shows, though.

I really think it is the best tv show ever.
What strikes me the most though is how similar the life on the poorest parts of the city are to where i live. The relationship between Police and criminals and community, the bureaucratic procedures, the state employees in general, the politicians, even the streets look like the streets in my neighborhood, it's fantastic how they capture the reality of the city and yet doesn't feel like a documentary.
