Sid, what missing link are you thinking of? I think Martin will eventually explain more about R'hllor and his powers/visions through Moqorro in a Vic chapter. Quaithe is not a Red Priestess herself just a shadowbinder as Mel is. Except Mel is also a Red Priestess. I think that's where the difference in their methods comes from.
Second on wanting another Essos POV. We spent 3 books there before anyone else turned up, but we barely know the place or its people. It's all just shallow, oriental sketches and one dimensional characters, except Jorah and Dany.
Of course, it might have been better to just not have Essos in the first place. Maybe have Dany start in Dorne.
