I guess it was good for a first episode. Still don´t like Emilia´s acting. All that proud faces and silly expressions.
So, badass hamer giants, whores´syndicates, seasick Dothraki (trololol, why they didn´t laugh?), Salahdor again, Margaery shit scented dress and smiling all around. And prison for the Onion Knight. c´mon.
And Missandei in diapers. Have to watch again later. And you and you , hello
Oh oh wait, why Ghost is not with Jon. Lol, I´m sure you want to kill me but tell me first.

I think I'm really happy about where they're taking , who we all know was not much of a character in the book. It looks as if she has a special place in her heart for the Starks. It will be interesting to see how this plays with what is coming for Sansa.
And I love the fact that there are some things that are going to surprise even the readers with the best of memories.

Overall enjoyed the episode, though it dragged a bit here and there and missed some of my fav characters, Brienne, Arya, Bran, etc...Watched it twice so yeah, good episode. It did seem a little cheap to not show more of the aftermath of the white walker attack, but we'll probably see more of that next week so can't show everything. Loved Ghost!
PS. Andrea, did you do the new art at the top of the page??? LOVE!

I wish this show blow my mind, I mean it should be that way. I´m not talking about this episode, just comparing to other shows. I like this show or better yet, I love the actors an some of the characters. But just that. There´s good shows on tv now. Ugh, I hope the writing and directing gets better. I will ninja edit this every half an hour apparently.
And here we come. I remember, the first 5 seconds of the episode are black screen and sound of battle. Don´t tell me that´s the battle. Don´t.
And again because I just re watched. So no more Tormund Giantsbane but " Eater" (he was eating "a pollito a la estaca" ). Two lines made me laughed, scene between Cersei and Tyrion when she´s at the door: "Podrick?", said Tyrion, "It´s your sister"... silence inside the room... "The Queen????". And the scene (this is not actually funny but, you know), between Davos, Stannis and Mel. "I thought I could talk to you alone" said Davos... and funny guy goes "We are alone". oh you smartypants. I think this one and Mance talking jon were the only ones I liked. Some good acting there for
Oh no wait (I´m feeling like in Mérde thread here) I lmao of how Krazniz (is it?) talks about Dany
Now I know what those Dany´s expressions are... like lost in the horizon , the same face she use for looking pre-teens dragons. I sense we´ll see a lot of that this season.
And Mance ... he´s exactly how I thought. Calm and piercing and :papada:

Oh I think lightning is better this time and dragons looks great. I´d love to see a close up of the other two btw.

I have a lot of thoughts, and I'll write up a longer post later. Overall, I liked the episode, even though it felt disjointed. Some of the dialogue could have been better, and I would've left the Cersei - Tyrion scene on the cutting room floor. Otherwise, terrific!
Bronn: "I'm a sellsword. I sell my sword. I don't loan it out to friends as a favor." Best line in the episode.
most of the dialogues could have been better, yes. Grrrrrr now I´m starting to remember and it´s like chocolate, itches.
D&D wrote and Minahan directed. Well, just first episode.

The lack of a white walker/night's watch battle didn't really bother me. I was pleased that they started Season 3 right where they left off Season 2 - with Sam peeing in his pants. And the corpse holding his head is wonderful! It was a great addition to the scene. I was so happy to see Ghost too! I thought it was a nice way to open Season 3.
The special effects were nicely executed. The dragons were great, and the little scorpion bug was terrific. The giant was a bit meh, but I was totally surprised to see a giant. I assumed they were no longer around, and were just part of Old Nan's stories. I don't know whether their presence will add anything to the story, but I suppose they could become relevant in a number of ways. But this post isn't about speculation; it's about good special effects.
Okay, here's my negative post. There were three scenes I disliked.
I already mentioned the Tyrion - Cersei scene. Other than allowing Bronn a moment of badassery, it was really pointless. What I got from the scene is that Tyrion is paranoid, Cersei is insecure, and Tywin didn't visit Tyrion, who is disappointed by the lack of recognition for his hard work and the lack of parental love and concern. They could've added two lines of dialogue to the Tyrion-Tywin scene and gotten the same information across. Then they would have had time for some more substantive content.
The second scene I disliked was the scene between Commander Mormont and Sam. Mostly because the raven issue comes out of nowhere. Obviously Sam screwed up and was supposed to send ravens somewhere about something. But it's never been mentioned before. Last thing Sam was doing was gathering dung for the fire. There was no mention of ravens or messages. And now Mormont acts like the world is ending because Sam didn't do something with a raven? I didn't follow the significance of the scene, and I hope they fill in the blanks for us.
The last scene I disliked was the Robb scene. The scene was nicely staged, but totally anticlimactic. They tease us with talk of a siege of Harrenhall, and then use a scene with incredible potential to make a fuss over Jaime being on the loose and Robb still being angry at his mother. It could have been an intense scene. The Mountain and the Lannister forces clearly can't beat Robb head-on in battle, but they have small victories via surprise attacks and acts of atrocity. Why not focus on that, instead of petty little plot points. I thought it was a wasted opportunity for a really awesome scene.
I have to agree about the ravens. I think I remember something about that from the book, but it made no sense at all to the OLS, who hadn't read the book. "What ravens? Where were the ravens, I don't remember any ravens."
Come to think of it, talk of ravens in that scene probably didn't make much sense in the book either.

I love what they did with Margaery's character this first episode. She shows herself to be an able stateswoman. The way she holds court with the orphans is a wonderful show for the commoners in Fleabottom. She understands the importance of wooing the peasants in order to prevent rioting and rebellion. I wondered at first whether her actions were sincere, but I think it's clear that she has been well-prepared to be the power behind the throne and to be a beloved public figure. She's not insincere, but her actions are not motivated by her love of the little people.
There's an interesting juxtaposition in this episode between Margaery and Danaerys in their interaction with children. They are both sweet and engaging with children, yet Margaery has an agenda driving her actions. Dany is genuine and sweet, with no hidden motivations.
The dinner scene with Cersei and Joffrey is a fascinating exposition of Margaery's strength. Cersei is sizing her up with her comments and attempts to steer her in the direction Cersei believes is appropriate, but Margaery is not flustered in the least. It's an interesting comparison to the way Cersei is able to toy with Sansa. Margaery has been prepared well for her position..much moreso than Cersei ever was. And I think Cersei is acutely aware of that fact.
The interplay between Cersei and Joffrey is fascinating too. Joffrey has complained to his mother in private, and when Cersei tries to address the issue, Joffrey slaps her down. He doesn't have the strength to stand up to Margaery, but he is happy to belittle his mother to keep her from standing up for him. It's an odd scene that truly showcases Joffrey's weakness.
but I think it's clear that she has been well-prepared to be the power behind the throne and to be a beloved public figure.
(I´m afraid that anything I´d say could be spoilery)

@Japie - I'm not at all annoyed with her accent, I love accents. You could hear Tormund has a faint one as well, made him sound a bit aristocratic for a wildling but I'm all for variety. The only accent I had trouble with was Shae's, but I've grown used to it. I think Carice's accent suits her character, she's supposed to be exotic and I think it adds a great deal to the sultriness in her voice. Forgot Saladhor, loved him to bits! About LF, there was a particular line that I thought was very clever, when he mentions Arya. Did it give any of you the impression that he recognized Arya in Winterfell? Because to me it looked like he was totally bluffing. "I met with your mother. She misses you. *pause* And Arya." Sansa think LF has knowledge of Arya but I think he only meant it as "she misses you and Arya".
EDIT: That should be Harenhall, not Winterfell. Thanks Cary!

JapieQ: I think we have a lot of Carise fans here. I'm not at all annoyed with her acting.
Melisandre seemed very wooden in her scene...emotionless. But I don't think it's bad acting. I think it's exactly how Carise intended to portray her. Carice is understated, and I think Mel needs to be. Mel is a charater who looks at the long game and doesn't get excited and flustered over the little things. And in this scene, she knows exactly how to approach Davos to make him show his intentions.
I like Carise, and I think her accent is great. I enjoy listening to her speak...not just the accent, but pitch and cadence too. She plays Mel well. I have trouble imagining another actress in the role who wouldn't overact the part or try to play Mel as more of a sleazy seductress.
Edit: I have a lot more to say about Stannis and the other characters/scenes I haven't discussed yet. But I'm trying to spread it out instead of writing one superlong post and boring you all to death. So don't think I'm ignoring some of the best material in the episode. I'll get to it!

I thought the scene with the ravens was pretty straightforward, Sam was in charge of the ravens and he periodically sent messages to Castle Black informing them on their locations and what they've found, I think this is mentioned in S2. What Mormont meant was "Have you sent a message to Castle Black about the attack on the Fist?", before losing their ravens in the battle. I would have loved to see the battle, of course, but I think it worked very well without it too. Sinister and effective, it reminded me of the opening scene in S1.
For me this episode was extremely solid, apart from Tyrion's scenes with Cersei and Bronn, which had too much of a S2 feel to them. Can we please change the Cersei-Tyrion banter to something other than "You're clever but not that clever, I'm clever too, oh but not cleverer than me etc" ? Surprising for me, I'm starting to like Kit, and I think I can see a glimpse of that intensity D&D talk about sometimes. His scene with Mance & Tormund was top notch IMO. I liked Tormund a LOT, and the bit of dialogue about the little skeletons. Two other scenes impressed me, one was Davos' rescue from the little Island and the moment where he had to declare his allegiance - whoah, you could see the torment and the fear on Liam Cunningham's face, and then his determination to remain loyal until the very end. Such powerful acting. The other was Robb's scene in Harenhall, especially when he looks up at his men and remembers he's a king and he calls for a cell for Catelyn. I loved that transition, it was subtle enough not to be in your face, and obvious enough to stand out. And Qyburn's last line was spot on. What else? Tywin's scene with Tyrion worked very well with the Lannister theme playing in the background, and his tirade made me remember why he's such a despicable shit . A good addition after his more sympathetic scenes in S2. Margaery's scenes were fairly good, especially the dinner scene, but that one was completely stolen by Jack Gleeson. Oh my R'hllor, just when you think you saw everything there was to see about Joffrey, this guy nails it again, he has such a fantastic presence. Stannis looks completely loony, I loved it. He has the shortest, simplest lines in the whole series, but that deadpan tone and his facial expressions, that's what makes his character. "They told me you were dead". "I am fighting". lol WUT? He's so incredibly detached from everything, it's like he's permanently stoned. Dany, meh, I don't have anything to say about her. From now on it's Jorah and Barristan for me.
Oh, one more thing. Everything looked better. The sets, the lighting, the people in the background, children playing and so on, everything seemed more natural - IF that was possible. Oh and that giant kicked ass. I was expecting something horrible, to tell you the truth.
And I'm a BIG fan of the decision to leave certain storylines out. I like this pacing and I welcome the longer scenes, they give you time to reacquaint yourself with the characters and their stories, which - for more casual viewers - is really important.
Aaaaand Winterfell was burned in the opening credits, how cool was that! My heart sank a bit, I swear.
You read my mind, Lady Macha, and isn't that scary? heheheh. Agree with all this I was explaining to my who is slowly, slowly becoming a fan, that that is in fact what the book Tywin is like. Although I do not remember Tywin blaming Tyrion for his wife's death, only Cersei doing that. But hey, I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.

I'm not so sure. Sam wasn't at the Fist when it was attacked, so how could he have sent a raven about the attack and why would Mormont be so angry with him? If Sam was supposed to stay at the Fist with the ravens at all times, then Mormont's comment makes sense. I assumed that dung-gathering with the other stewards was one of Sam's duties, which makes Mormont's attitude strange.

I'm with BaS here, we know about the ravens, but it just seemed sour grapes on Mormont's part.
Yes, I forgot to say, the giant was AWESOME.

@BaS The dung-gathering was just at the base of the Fist, at least that's how I always imagined it. The attack took them all by surprise, hence why Sam wasn't at his "post", he was just helping the others out. I assume that's something they all did, not just the stewards. I don't believe there were so many stewards out there anyway, apart from Sam (whom Mormont took on precisely because he needed someone for the ravens) and Edd.
@Ly Andi asked the same question about Tywin in the other thread. I think Tywin definitely blames him for his wife's death in the books, but maybe not in that scene. Will have to check but it didn't struck me as being out of character.
OMG the giant! Love the episode, hated the ending. I thought the Sam-smackdown of Mormont was justified too, his job was to rush back to the fist and let go some ravens, it doesn't matter you were collecting dung at the time. The dragonscene gave me some serious goosebumps, I was at my parents with 5.1 dolby surround and it was just bloody awesome.
Also: no Varys. I did enjoy Ros again this episode, her character becomes an interesting one. She is warning Shae to watch that creepy boss of her lol!
The Stannis scene was fantastic, there is a hilarious gif of that one in the meme-thred by Macha. On dutch forum everyone is crying again how Carice sucks lol, I can't believe how much we like to hate succesful people out here. Are there people here who are annoyed by her acting/accent? Salladhor Saan was great too, he is a scene-stealer!
I have forgot tons of other stuff of course, tonight I'm watching with some non-book readers. Should be fun when they see the giant.
Also about the "mark your spoilers". This is about future events we bookreaders know about? Since we have another topic for those discussions I don't see the use for spoilers here?

Of course you mean Harrenhall. And I think the writers want us to think he recognized her. I don't see any reason why Littlefinger *shouldn't* know where Arya is.

I absolutely think LF recognized Arya at Harrenhall. That long look he gave her was one of recognition, not one of "gee, she'd make a great whore some day." Or at least, that's my interpretation. I think he used Arya's name in the scene with Sansa to lure her in and exert more influence over her. I don't think for a moment he dropped her name carelessly or that he had any intention of sharing his knowledge of Arya's whereabouts.
I really enjoyed the LF/Sansa, Ros/Shae scene. I absolutely love LF and his funny way of anunciating. All I could think as Sansa fell for LF's trap was, "Noooooooo, didn't you learn anything? Same mistake as your father to trust him." And I can imagine all too well the different awful possibilities should Sansa end up in LF's hands. I suppose it's remotely possible that she would end up sent back to the Starks, but I sincerely doubt she'll ever be reunited with any of them. All I could think of was LF in S2, Ep 10 remarking that he needed to acquire some sons.
I'm liking Ros as well. Shae tries playing her little "I don't know what you're talking about" game that works for everyone else, but Ros sees right through her and disregards her protestations. And Ros is playing her "whore with a heart of gold" role well, even though it's a bit simplistic. I hope the writers make good use of her and allow her a little more cunning as they develop her character.
Macha wrote:Aaaaand Winterfell was burned in the opening credits, how cool was that! My heart sank a bit, I swear.
opening credits? the sounds in the black screen you say? but that was the WW attacking the NW to me.

Wow, has it really been a year? After being a bit let down by the Walking Dead finale, this show knows how to do drama properly.
Sam!
Run you chubby bastard!!!!, tho I feel his escape from his crazy predicament last season was a bit too easily resolved. I was really happy seeing ghost. And then I went, what the hell is ghost doing with Sam and not Jon? It is just a bit odd, and I wonder how it will play out.
Jon!
He seemed to have become more of a man! His confidence telling Mance why he wanted to join was convincing and played off well from the scene at Crasters keep. Thormund was definately menacing, tho I will have to see how he develops his relationship with Jon later.
Tyrion!
Especially loved his scene with Tywin, Charles Dance is a cold hearted bastard.
Margaery!
Great scene how she uses honey instead of vinegar approach to achieve her path to power. I think it's great how they characterize her as quite savvy and things should be quite fun once she and Cersei start to clash.
Davos!
YES! They brought Salador back, they did not confirm his casting and I was really happy to see him, hmmm, might this be the GreatJon might make an appearance soon too? We had to laugh when Stannis raised an eyebrow when he saw Davos again, I went: "That is Stannis looking happy and surprised!"
Dany!
Loved the ship, loved how great the dragons looked. Loved Missandei and the business dealings with the unsullied, (yikes! the nipple thingey!) And I liked how they used the little girl assassin, a great way to introduce Ser Barristan back and I am glad they dropped that silly Whitebeard business, only thing I miss is Strong Belwas...or maybe not.
I liked that the episode took it's time more, and felt less the need to check in with EVERYONE. I liked it more than the S2 permiere and after all this time it lived up to my expectations. Now gotta wait 7 days again...Grrrr.

Ok my thoughts. Not a strong opener. Ep 101 and 201 where better at setting the stage for each season. The episode had more good points than bad, but the bad we're horrid. So lets begin.
opening sequence: wtf? Ok am I to believe that the NW destroyed all the wights and Walkers? Sam just got away? And I don't remember seeing Sam with raven cages before....not when he was with Grenn and Edd last season anyway. Ghost was great, but that whole intro left me puzzled.
Jon vs mance: I really enjoyed it. Couldn't get past Caeser though. Shallow of me, but its true. Tormund was great. I really love the book exchange between Jon and Mance about why he wants to join the wildlings (the whole "that's where they put the bastard" part), but I liked their spin on it and it avoided any confusion if they went more like he book. Ygritte annoys me. And I missed Val and Dalla. And Rattleshirt? What's with the pig face?
tyrion vs Cersei: I agree with Macha. Enough already with the you're cunning shit. It wasn't a good scene. I did like he nose comment. I have a new favorite whore however. That girl w Bronn is hot!
Sansa and Shae: oops. I just vomited in my mouth again.
dany: the boat scene was well done. CGI did not look bad. Jorahs V neck. mmmmm Happy. Then he meeting with Kraznys. Straight outta the book and really well done. Would have liked to have seen the nipple slice. Meeting Selmy was good and a necessary change from the book. His acting seemed forced however. I liked the warlock tie in.
davos: liked all his scenes. But the one with Stannis was tops. Mel looked great and is really playing he villain well.
Dormer: what's her name in the book? I forget. Anyway her mouth seems like its righted itself. The only thing I liked in her scenes. I understand why she is playing the sympathic role with e people but I thought the scene lacked.
Joffs dinner party: another poor scene. Didn't do anything for me.
Robb: I think Roose is handsome as hell. Other than that and the introduction of Qyburn( which I missed due to having to wee) his scenes lacked. Oh and To make matters worse Talisa is still alive.
Tyron vs Tywin: best scene of the episode. They both had great chemistry and really fucking nailed it. Charles dance is unreal. Loooovvvveed it.
I can't remember anymore. Will give it a rewatch soon.

Joffrey! Jack Gleeson's acting was phenomenal. Wouldn't it be something if he retires from acting at the same time he wins an Emmy for best supporting? (We've no idea whether he's retiring as Joffrey on Game of Thrones or whether some other actor will pick Joffrey up next year, only that he wants to give up acting, the sooner the better)

He wants to give up acting? That's BS. He needs to stick out the commitment he made to the show. HBO relied on his availability for however many years his character lives when they agreed to cast him, and he's a little shit if he reneges. *steps off lawyerly soapbox* Then again, he does play a gutless character with no honor, so maybe it's rubbing off?

I'm *sure* he's going to fulfill his contract. And it's also possible he'll continue working part-time for whatever they need Joffrey for. But maybe there will be less scenes with him...

From what I have read is that he wants to go back to school after his GOT commitment is done, I think thats a noble intention. I hear he wants to be an academic, can you imagine going to class and seeing your teacher is King Joffrey? Hahaha

Okay, cool. I won't talk any more smack then. I'm glad he wants to pursue a different path. I was just annoyed about the thought of him walking on his contract. But yeah, it would be unnerving and really cool to have him as a teacher.
Ok where to start. This is my first watch after reading all the books last Summer.
Noticed Winterfell straight away The blank screen had me confused ... til my thoughts gathered. Sam RUN!! Little fat Sam . I spent too much time looking at the dead man's head to see if he looked like one of our beloved Crows or indeed an American president that the gore factor was lost on me. Totally got the Ravens .But his temper did seem out of context even to a reader.
Jon, I very much like his step up from Moody Teen already .I'm feeling it. Ghost . Clappy Clappy. Manse "blach" Urgh do not like him. Tormund Fantastic !... missing a few HARS ... early days.
Danny , don't like Missi being aged up but hey ho . Whitbeard was SHOCKINGLY bad.
Some great one liners again for Tyrion. Bronn's brothel scene was weird on the back of Ripper street.
Stannis was GOLD. They've mixed a lot of shit up around Harrenhall but I guess I can see why.
Looking forward to next week. The people I have bonded with most were a miss , tho again I can see why.
So Danaerys and Jorah seem to be having an easier time now that they're away from Qarth. I thought it was interesting that Dany is still dreaming of having her own khalasar (sp?), despite the fact that she's crossing the Narrow Sea. She thinks that others will cross of their own volition to join her? That doesn't seem very realistic, but maybe I am missing something. Maybe she's planning on heading back to Dothrakiland and making her show of strength there to attract a khalasar? Or not... Maybe her dreams of a khalasar show that even though she's maturing as as woman and as a leader, she still has quite a way to go.
I liked Dany's wardrobe...feminine without being overly sexy. A departure from the Dothraki garb, and appropriate to her circumstances and surroundings. Very pragmatic and practical. I approve.
The scene with Kraznys the slave master is fantastic! And the girl translates so stoically. It's brilliant. Best dialogue in the entire episode. I think it's safe to assume Dany is going to acquire some of these Unsullied warriors. They're pretty badass. They certainly won't be impressed with her soft-hearted approach any more than the iron born would be. But if they obey as unquestioningly as advertised, it shouldn't matter whether she has their respect or not.
I already mentioned how much I liked the warlock scorpion bug. But I really liked the entire scene. The little girl lures in Dany so well, and Jorah seems oblivious to the danger. I loved when the little girl hissed and jumped in the water. I honestly thought we had a fun new type of nasty creature for the characters to look out for. When Selmy mentioned the warlocks, it seemed like a really random comment. It wasn't until I saw the episode for the second time that I noticed her lips turn dark, and I could see what they were trying to portray. But maybe I'm a bit slow.
I was so happy to see Barristan Selmy! I figured he would make an appearance in the episode based on the inclusion of his exit scene in the recap of Season 2. I wish I hadn't seen it because it would have been a much bigger surprise. But I was really thrilled. At first I thought "awww, the poor old fellow needs a purpose in life." But I'm really unsure what his motivation is. Is that sincerity behind that plea for foregiveness or a well-planned ploy to manipulate Dany? Is he really trying to right a wrong for which he feels responsible? Does he want to overthrow Joffrey and get his revenge that way? And more importantly, what are his intentions towards Dany? Does he merely want to protect her because of his failure to protect her father and siblings? Or does he actually want to see her on the iron throne? I think he's too pragmatic to be doing this just for honor. He's no Ned Stark. So I'll be interested to see how this develops. And I can't wait to see whether Dany is as willing to trust him as Jorah seems to be.
There was a definite Native American meets "The Mammoth Hunters" feel to the Wildling encampment. I liked it. The small game and tanning racks and wonderful little details gave it an authentic feel. They're like the Dothraki gone polar. lol. Their reaction to Jon Snow was fun. I was a little skeptical about all the tree trunks, since I haven't seen trees since Craster's Keep, but I won't nitpick. I really enjoyed the camp and the wildlings.
The giant was pretty good! I was completely surprised. I didn't expect to see giants. I didn't understand all of what Ygritte said about the giant. She needs to annunciate! I still don't care for her, especially her accent. She needs to clear her throat before she speaks. In any case, Giants could be game changers in some situations. Let's just hope they can't turn into wights!
The scene in Mance's tent was pretty good. My first thought when I saw the Lord of Bones remove his mask was "Robert! I thought you were dead!" He's a slightly less hairy Mark Addy. lol. The first part of the dialogue was mediocre, but I liked the exchange between Mance and Jon. Tormund and the axe guy were pretty good. I think I liked the axe guy better than Tormund.
I liked Mance...fairly unassuming, soft-spoken and intelligent. Not attractive, but somewhat charismatic. He is believable as a peer of Qorin Halfhand. The one thing I had hoped was that Mance wouldn't blindly accept Jon's story about joining the wildlings. And while Jon's story was fairly convincing, I hope Mance doesn't trust him. The handshake bothered me...same exact ploy as the handshake between Jaime and Jon in Season 1. It seemed out of place.
Jon Snow is finally growing up. He killed one of his idols and caused the deaths of Qorin's rangers, and it appears to have had an effect on him. I wish well for the guy, but I sincerely hope his path isn't an easy one. Becoming an accepted member of the wildlings shouldn't be easy. So I have high hopes for Jon this season.
