Pre-episode thoughts:  I haven't seen the preview, so I don't know what we're in for this week. But I'd better be seeing some Starks this episode! Arya especially...and I want to see the Hound kill some Brotherhood members. He'd better not get killed or I'll be pissed. And I want to see what's going on with Stannis, Davos and Melisandre. I've kind of lost interest in what's happening north of the Wall, and we've seen plenty of King's Landing and Astopol lately, so I'd like to see this episode focus on the folks in between a bit.

Loving several characters and scenes. Writing was good too. Editing tho, a mess. A mess! Some acting I wasn´t liking, I loved (Arya was one). The arranged marriages thingy didn´t like. Too quick and easy but I don´t care. Where are the wolves tho no. People need to see to care. Supercreepy Selyse and the buffet of pickled babies!!! loved that and Tara whatshername it´s gooood. And loved that scene with Dillane. "I´ve wronged you"... and the crazy chicken... is soooo happy!!!

Tormund´s is not what... well you know... but lordy his head makes me laugh. Wut´s going on there?tormund

I had 0 expectations for Jon-Ygritte scene because it was always meh to me, luckily because it wasn´t good. About that, the asses´ scenes were pretty rushed, no, not that... Must be the editing.

Papa Stannis and that hug. I truly loved that shot... he´s behind the door listen to that little voice. This I forgot all about and I just can´t believe it... the friendship between Davos and Shireen. When he called her Princess, I think I cried. The sweetest thing. I loved that in the books. patchface? I couldn´t care less.

BUT I could love this entire season just for Shireen. Loved her to pieces. To pieces!!! That little thing!!! Come here my lovehuggs. The song at the end with that sweet little voice. I know I know, oh oh oh.

So now that we´re talking children please, shrink the chick that ate my 8 year old Missandei. Give her back to me!

Ok, the pacing was too fast and the editing was a MESS. Like, really bad. That's the one big minus for this episode. Short cuts, no buildup, too many angles. Now onto the good stuff.

BATH SCENE. Fuck my life. I'm calling it, probably the best scene in all 3 seasons. The looks, the voice modulations, everything. EVERYTHING. "My name is Jaime". freakout They kept it! THEY KEPT IT! I'm gonna cry just writing about this.

Stannis&Selyse. Nailed it. I friggin love Tara Fitzgerald. The pickled babies, LOOOOL. Whoever thought of that (was it you, Cogman?) deserves an award. And I loved how she reacted when he brought up Shireen. He's a good daddy! Dillane was a whole different person this episode. "I wronged you." "Yes yes I was so happy". "WUT" 5 stars out of five.

Stannis&Shireen. I LOVE YOU, MY BABY! She's amazing. "Did you win? "Noup". Gaaaah! They were so cute. Damn, everything about Dragostone is depressing. Even the interiors. No wonder everybody there is cuckoo.
Shireen&Davos. Just leave me here to die. I can't write anything coherent about this scene.

Aaaand I think that's about it. Robb and Karstark I liked, the first scene. The map scene was not so bad either. Loved to see some of Robb's old spark back in there. Hihihi, the Freys are coming. yippie

Oh and I'm loving what they're doing with the music over the ending credits this year. Shireen singing is right up there next to Rains of Castamere.

PS: Roose Bolton trolling. That was a genius moment.

Awww, wasn't that sweet?  Did he mean it in a romantic sense or a chivalrous sense though?  Either way, I melted.

My favorite scene was Jaime telling about why he killed the mad king.  And then Brienne calls him Kingslayer.  "My name's Jaime."  I love him more than ever.  He has so much more depth than I expected.

S3 so kickass...great ep...a notch down from last week but lots of great stuff again...top notch.

I did notice some editing weirdness...very odd...but such happens with such a huge scale show, with limited time and budget....its still a Tv show in the end.

Let me first start by saying that "Written for televison by Bryan Cogman" should start EVERY FUCKING EPISODE. There really was not much that I disliked about this episode. I felt the pace was fine and I didnt mind the editing at all. I don't know the director and can not remember him from any other episodes. But I usually dont focus on direction anyway. Its always been about the writing for me. Bryan Cogman 1 and Vanessa Taylor 0.

Trial By Combat: What a way to start. Glad I poured my beer a during the credits and made it before they started. Thoros of Myr starting off with the prayer gave me chills. Arya seen through the flames as Beric lights his sword. The Hounds look of disbelief as he comprehends his situation. The choreography, the acting, Arya screaming to kill Sandor, everything was perfect. I couldnt remember how much was from the book, but I think it was pretty spot on. "Looks like their God likes me more than your butchers boy" Ha. Face palm.

Saucy Roose:  Not much here except Roose has a General Zod thing going on (Superman II) and is super sexy.  Jaime meets Qyburn was straight out of the books and I think we have anther perfect casting.

The Cave:  this was the only blemish in a nearly perfect episode.  And it was all due to Kits inability to act.  He was as bad as ever in this whole sequence.  From his tough guy approach with Orell to his trip to Maryland for a box lunch.  Terrible.  I will save the jokes.  This scene had enough of those.

Robb's V neck, Karstarks all neck:   Ok, so Robb no longer wears crew shirts.  Fine.  but it doesnt work for me.  This scene would have been the worst if it wasn't for Kit.  I did enjoy the Blackfish punch.  And I must say, Catelyns hair looked lovely.  Super Hot.  Robb should have thrown Karstark in the dungeon to contemplate a better comeback than "the King who LOST the North".  Low budget.  I wanted Robb to repeat Ned's execution line from the pilot.  Oh well.

Shireen:  Great scene with Stannis and his wife.  Win win for Stannis.  Gets to bang Mel and still get home cooked meals.   Edric.  Lol.  Nice Cogs.  No patchface.  And I am sorry to say, but Shireen annoyed me in a Charles Dickens kind of way.  Don't really care either way.   Did like to see Stannis show some compassion.  Davos looks good for rotting in a cell.

The Bath:  for some reason I always pictured a large tub for this scene.  Thanks to Y,I was wrong.  This scene was played out exactly as GRRM wrote. Except I do not think he had a body double for Brienne.  so much emotion in this scene.  I think NCW did a fantastic job.  he really showed how far he has sunk and how defeated he is.  Gone is the smugness and wit.  He is a broken man.  and he is now concered for how he is viewed.  Bravo ser.   One thing....did Bri ever say " my name is Brienne" in the series? I don't recall.

Pedo Gendry:  this scene was ok.  Arya is good.  Loved her teary line about being her family.  Gut wrenching.  Also loved how she asked thoros about bringing back Ned.

LF and Sansa:  meh

Loras fucks:  saw that coming.

Daddy dearest:  didn't see Loras coming there.  Makes sense though.

Great great episode.  I can't think anymore

I was happy that they opened with Thoros and Beric and the Hound too. The Hound was ready for business, waiting for them to finish their religious mumbo jumbo. And then Beric and Thoros cut themselves, and I got a terrible feeling they would use magic to win and kill the hound. When they lit the sword, I felt so bad for Sandor. It felt almost out of Greek myth, they way his Achilles heel was being used against him. The fire messed with my mind. But the Hound was his usual badass self and put up one hell of a fight! It was as though the fire made him even more determined.  The scene was beautifully choreographed, and in some ways the Hound reminded me of Bronn's trial by combat at the Aerie. Arya was funny to watch. The girl has no fear; only anger. And I was so happy when the Hound killed Beric. I mean, Beric seems cool, but he shouldn't beat the Hound. Ever.  The sword breaking was fantastic.

And then Thoros...WTF was that? I was mad. I said a very bad word when I saw that Beric was alive. But now I understand some of the allure that the red god holds, if this magic allows for resurrection. I'm not sure whether the blood at the beginning had anything to do with the resurrection or not. I liked the scene where Beric explains his resurrection, and shows the price he has paid each time. "I'm a bit less." That got to me.

And the Mountain killed him! I understand now why everyone thought my description of Beric was so funny several months ago. Someone referred to him as the guy Ned Stark sent after the Mountain. And I said something along the lines of "Oh, that guy. I remember thinking he was going to die badly." Or something like that. And everyone thought it was so funny. It only took me six months to get the joke.

It was not a body double, the shot was cropped so that the viewer could see Jaime's expression better. There was simply no need for a wider shot, and it's not like GC has a problem with nudity (see various photo shoots etc).

Oh, and to answer one of your questions, Ry - it's Jaime that says "My name is Jaime", not Brienne. The line is from the book, with the exception that he doesn't say it out loud there.

So has Lena but she wont do nudity on this show. Its a Body Double. Else the front edit would not have been under the water when she lowered herself. I am steadfast on this. :)

I know Jaime says it. In The books Brienne says "My name is Brienne" over and over while he is her captive , so that when Jaime says"My name is Jaime" its more dramatic. I could not remember if Brienne in previous episodes told Jaime "My name" after he was making fun of her.

Wow, thats some great editing with a Body Double. Thanks Macha.  I love how the use the Peter Jackson technique of having the stand in in the foreground to make her appear much larger than Jaime.

I love that you remember those things Basi ...

Great review Ry , I enjoyed immensely. Couple of things I disagree with but that's personal taste. I enjoy Kit's acting and I don't think of Gendrey as Pedo bear. Also... Why do you think Brienne was a body double? Because you just saw her from behind?

Yes, it was edited so that you do not see her head or face. Body double.

Right, no she doesn't say it in the show. But I think it still works for Jaime, because she does call him Kingslayer over and over again, as do other characters. So it's a nice comeback from him, especially after his monologue.
Fine! We'll see who wins the body double debate once the interviews/audio commentaries start kicking in.

Yes, it works. But I rather liked the whole, my name is Brienne first, and then when J says it its like he is now on her level. But the scene was perfect. Except for the body double. ;)

idk why so many people think it's a body double, tbh. i'm with macha on this one, i don't think it's a body double at all. I don't think she's got a trouble with nudity, she's got a gorgeous model like body, and she was in an interview very proud of how defining was for Brienne and her feminity to stand there naked in front of Jaime. To be 100% certain we'll have to wait until they say so themselves I guess, but i mean from the way the scenes were shot, i would've been more suspicious of Nikolaj using a body double than her.

I can't tell if it's a stunt ass or not, and I don't really care. If it is, they did a great job editing. But if it's a double, I'm disappointed in their "casting" for the part. This is a woman who runs around in full armor and swings a sword. I know Gwen is lanky, but it her physique should be considerably more athletic. Using a double would certainly have allowed them to choose a more appropriately built woman.

In any case, the scene was amazing.

Ya know, I'm siding with Ry on this one. In a show that has no problems showing the buttses and boobages and weenies, why are Brienne's bewbies blocked by Jaime's head in the clip Macha showed? It's a double.

And it doesn't matter either way, does it?

So, Mr. Tir's thoughts on last episode:

bwb: He really enjoyed the fight but he thought they didn't do a good job on showing that Beric had actually died. When he heard his voice he said "oh, i thought he had died". "He did". "What? Really?" That said, he found the explanation scene very well done, and loved Thoros low key attitude about the whole thing. He thinks the BwB are a robinhoodeske group, and do mean o carry out their word and take Arya to her family on Riverrun. However, he doesn't think at all that she'll make it there, "cause it's Martin", and would she make it to Riverrun, even if Robb and Catelyn had gone, she'd be safe cause it's her mom's family, and therefore it's not gonna happen. He thinks the hound is gonna ambush them and kidnap her and take her to the lannisters to try and win back their favour, cause it's made clear in last episode that every non-lannister in the realm thinks of him as a lannister dog still and wants him dead, and the lannisters think of him as a disgruntled desertor, a traitor even. He'll never convince everyone else that he's his own man, but the lannisters would forgive him and take him back should he bring them Arya, and at least he'd have food and a roof over his head. He's afraid of what the lannisters could do to arya in KL once the lannisters learn of Jaime's maiming and the murdered boys.

sansa: Of the three possible outcomes (tyrion, loras and littlefinger) he thinks that's a close call between the first and the third but that Tyrion's is the one who will happen cause "it has the most potential for conflict on paper, with both of them hating the arrangement and Shae in the middle". Second possibility would be that she's so horrified of that prospect that she runs away with "paedofinger". He thinks this is too horrible to bear thinking but it could happen too if he's back by the time Sansa' learned of the Lannister proposal and is so horrified by it that decides to trust him to get her out of there "never realizing his second intentions with her". Loras won't happen, he's convinced, "cause that's what she wants. She wouldn't care he's gay, that might even be a plus, when comparing having to bed any of the other candidates, Joffrey included. "She'd be so very delighted to be the Lady of chic, elegant Highgarden, organizing balls and masquerades and whatnot, that... it won't happen. No way."

dany: he didn't care about "toro cornudo" (grey worm) but it was fun to watch jorah fishing barristan for info.

jon snow: he was very happy with tormund and orells performance, and he was happy to see jon "having some balls" when taking to them. happy that jon finally broke his vows with ygritte, he thinks at this point she loves him more than her own people and could betray them to stay with him if need be. he think jon's getting tempted to do the same, but jon won't cause he's "ned stark's bastard". He's very curious about what will happen with Sam and Gilly, and if the murdering crows will bother go back to the wall, or stay there with craster's daughters until the WWs kill them.

robb: He was a bit surprised about Karstark being such a big part of Robb's army, and he keeps wondering where are all the other lords who swore loyalty to him when they proclaimed him king in the north. He thinks to get the freys back, Catelyn is gonna be married off to Lord Walder Frey cause he's always had a soft spot for her, and probably several other tullys (edmure, the blackfish) will have to take frey wives. And that this time a promise won't do, that it'll have to be done on the spot. But after being completely detached of Robb's storyline this whole season (actually, since the middle of last season), and repeatedly saying so, now he's "back on the robb wagon purely because i want to see proud Tywin's face when he takes casterly rock". He still believes Robb's stupid and doomed, but he thinks that casterly rock will be "his last stand and that even if he only holds it for a few days and dies in the process betrayed by bolton" that it'd be so rewarding to see that. "cause someone's gotta bring tywin down a peg, and there'd be nothing more beautiful than taking his precious casterly rock away from him. 'a pup stealing the lion's den.'"

jaime/brienne/bolton: he's very intrigued by this storyline. he's not sure what's bolton's game but he's sure bolton has a game. in any case, he thinks that they'll never reach robb, and they both will probably scape, but that Jaime is going to feel so embarrased that now he WONT want to go to KL, he'd want to let himself die in some doomed fight or another, but that Brienne will save him and dragg him back, fulfilling the promise she made to Catelyn, just when sansa's been married/spirited off and cannot leave so the lannisters don't even have to look bad for not following on their part of the agreement.

stannis: he was delighted to see stannis back being himself (he was actually cheering every sentence he spoke), and he let out the most pitiful "aww" when he saw sweet shireen's scarred face. He was confused that she was blond but thought maybe's a side effect of whatever the desease is. he loved every bit of the dragonstone storyline, including creepy selyse. The only thing that bugs him is that she referred to the shadow baby as "his son". he can't get over that.

Better late than never.

The first thing I noticed about Episode 5 is that there’s a new city in Essos in the opening credits. Runkai. So I guess that’s where Danaerys is headed.

I already discussed the scenes with the Hound, but I’d like to add that this episode provided a completely different view of Thoros as a warrior-priest. In the opening scene, he is reminiscent of Melisandre in her first scene where the Seven are burned. Then later we hear the discussion of Thoros fighting at Pyke during the Ironmens’ rebellion. He has clearly distinguished himself in battle. He’s no simple wandering priest trying to gather a flock for the red god. I can imagine the hatred Balon and Yara must hold for him, and I wonder if there will ever be a confrontation between Thoros and one of the Greyjoys.

Then we go to Jon Snow. He’s trying to prove himself by providing the information that is requested, albeit reluctantly. I like that Orell okay, but Tormund is definitely growing on me. The scene with Ygritte stealing the sword and running off was pretty lame…a stupid ploy. I didn’t catch immediately that the cave had a hot spring running through it, and I was skeptical about her stripping down like that. Sorry, but their first kiss was just gross. But it looks like Jon Snow got the hang of things, even if he’s no prodigy. The Stark boys seem to be in an awful hurry when it comes to getting down to business.

The after sex scene bothered me. Ygritte was quite good, and her beginning to reminisce about her different conquests was funny. It truly highlights the differences between north of the Wall and south. There’s no slut shaming up north. Lol. She was genuine. In contrast, Kit Harrington was awful in this scene. He was incapable of conveying the emotions of a young man who had just had sex for the first time and broken the vows he had taken so seriously. Instead he was cool and comfortable. There was a missed opportunity for this scene to show a real turning point for the character and the actor.

The Harrenhall scene with Brienne and Jaime was quite good. Bolton’s political savvy are on display here. I sense that he’s every bit as brutal as his brethren, but that he knows when to keep a lid on it. He certainly has good judgment in that respect. I cringed when he started giving Jaime the impression that Cersei and his kids were dead. He’s definitely a sadist.
Jaime’s scene with Qyburn was excellent. “I’ll scream loudly.” Definitely a tough guy. And the look on Qyburn’s face as he began to cut was perfect. I don’t know how he had the strength for a bath after that, but I’m glad he did! You would think seeing Jaime strip and stand there naked would be sexy, but it really wasn’t. The makeup artists did an excellent job of showing the toll of his stint with the Boltons on his body. And the entire scene, I wanted Brienne to go over and wash his face and hair. What a mess!

Jaime’s exchange with Brienne and his vulnerability were touching, especially when he told her he trusts her and apologized. I feel like it was a turning point for him as a character. He wants her to understand him and his attempt to justify himself is heartwrenching. I loved how this scene tied into the scene in the throne room between Jaime and Ned in the first season. And it clarifies so many things. It makes sense that Ned Stark would never give Jaime the benefit of the doubt. And the close of that scene, when Brienne called him the Kingslayer absolutely killed me.

What didn’t make sense about Jaime’s story is probably based on my own lack of knowledge. I had the impression that Tywin was the Mad King’s Hand. Yet Jaime talks about Hands being burned alive and Tywin being allowed through the gates and sacking the city. It doesn’t add up. So obviously I’m missing some key information here.

The other thing I got out this scene and the Jorah/Barristan Selmy is the contrast between Jaime and Barristan. I wonder what they truly thought about each other. Barristan was willing to stand by and allow atrocities to happen in the name of his oath. Jaime wasn’t. And despite the respect they had for each other as warriors, I can’t imagine they respected each other as people. Jaime’s comments about not wanting to be Hand in the first episode of season 1 ring truer in light of these revelations.

Olenna is the consummate politician. She has a good handle on the facts, but keeps them under wraps until she needs to use them as a weapon. And she is clearly the source of Margaery’s knowledge about how to win the hearts of the people. I get the feeling Olenna is also every bit as ruthless as she is savvy.

GENDRY!!! YOU IDIOT! Okay, it was a sweet scene. I wasn’t sure if the “My Lady” comment was meant in a sexual sense or in a socioeconomic sense. I think it wouldn’t have seemed sexual if Arya weren’t so grown up and Gendry weren’t so sexy.

The confrontation between Karstark and Robb was quite good. Karstark, as always, is telling the hard truths, and Robb disregards him. Catelyn looks so defeated. The parallel between the Lannister boys being killed and the Winterfell orphans being killed is probably too much for her to bear. I like that Catelyn and Tulisa spoke on Karstark’s behalf. They’re willing to be practical in order to win the war. And in an interesting parallel with Theon’s execution of Ser Roderick, Robb decides that a show of strength is more important than the consequences of the execution. At least Robb didn’t botch it.

In a later scene when it becomes clear that Karstark accounted for half of Robb’s forces, it becomes clear that Robb’s bid to be King of the North is over. He just won’t accept it. I had so hoped he would go to Casterly Rock earlier on, but it’s too late. And our poor Robb is going to trust his fate to the man he disrespected now? That’s an extremely bad idea. I agree with Tulisa. He needs to get his butt north and prepare for winter.

The scenes at Dragonstone were interesting. When I saw the woman praying to the flames, I thought she might be another red priestess. But it’s just Stannis’ cra-cra wife. And what a piece of work she is! She makes Lyssa Arryn look normal. I think Melisandre’s honesty is fascinating. But I hate the “stand by your man” crap. In a series filled with strong, determined women, she appears to be the opposite. And when she spoke of her daughter, I wondered whether Shireen was a monster locked in the dungeon. And it turns out she is! Little Shireen is sweet, but didn’t impress me much. She has a sad and lonely life though.

Stannis was excellent in his confession scene with his wife and his honesty with his daughter. The absolute awkwardness with a touch of resignation and sweetness is perfect.

Little Finger really gets his creep on in this episode. For the first time he’s openly leering at Sansa. And his “I’m your true friend” is so inept when compared to Margaery’s attempts to persuade Sansa of the same thing. I feel so badly for Sansa. She once again has this fairy tale that has captured her imagination that blinds her to what’s going on around her. And knowing that she will never marry Loras, it’s truly sad. Of course, Loras is no prince charming, so it’s not nearly as sad as it will seem to Sansa.

The final scene with the Lannisters was fun. Cersei’s eyebrows should be listed as their own character in the credits. I had actually been spoiled about the Tyrion/Sansa matchup, so it wasn’t a huge surprise, but it was still enjoyable. Cersei is such a smug bitch, and then pop goes her bubble. I feel no sympathy. It’s actually a good match. And Loras wouldn’t be spending much, if any, time in her bed, so I think it’s an inspired idea. Tywin’s profound disappointment in his children is clear in this scene, but I’m not entirely sure they deserve his contempt. They are what he made them. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out, and what the Tyrells will do once they find out about the change in plans.

Lady Black, to fill in your Aerys backstory. From what I remember Tywin *was* his hand for most of his reign. But when the king slipped into madness Tywin quit his position, Aerys let Tywin get away with it only because they knew each other for such a long time. Aerys had other hands replace him, but they did not fare well as they fell victim of his escalating madness and thirst for Wildfire. The trust Aerys had for Tywin was his downfall as it was the reason Pycelle used to convince him to open the gates for his army...and the rest is history.

Tywin quit being Aegons Hand because he felt dishonored when Aegon named Jaime a member of the Kingsguard and thus removing Jaime as his heir to Casterly Rock. From what I remember.
