In honor of our (and by our I mean me and Tir's) beloved Chicot, and mostly to spite Andi, I hereby declare this thread open. Spread your love for all things French.
Tir and I already started in the chat, and we've basically decided Alexandre Dumas needs his own temple here. You'll find us in an abandoned outpost eating a greasy chicken and gulping down 6 bottles of wine while we make plans for its creation.

I just watched un flic incroyable. Potiche. Starred Gerard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve. It's set in 1977 and almost feels like the movie was made then, given the lack of depth of any of its characters, almost as if the movie was intended to lampoon those films.

Oh, oh. Speaking of "Le concert", you have to see at least two of Mihaileanu's other movies, Tir. His recent "La source des femmes" and his "Train de vie". Just wonderful.

"La source des femmes"has been in my wishlist for a while, but i'd never heard of "Train de vie". Just saw the trailer and I'm adding it. Thanks for the tip!

Tir, tell me this because me and Mr. Macha were trying to remember some time ago but we didn't have all the books at hand. How do the musketeers die? We couldn't remember the details for each one. Porthos dies in some siege? Ugh, what I wouldn't give for a good memory. Oh and I never finished The 45, because someone lost my second volume. Which means I missed Henry's death, didn't I? Damn damn damn.
Athos without thinking John Malkovich aka the worst casting choice in the history of cinema.
oh, please don't remind me!!!! He won't ruin my Athos, my poor sad man , I'll never picture him as Athos. It'd be an insult!
That movie had godawful castings for everyone, but the script was so much worse Randall Fucking Wallace He poisons everything he touches.
And Di Caprio? Wasn't he absolutelly hillarious when he tried to pretend he was a "tough baddie"?

@macha: On another topic, you read La reine Margot and La Dame de Montsoreau and you never finished the 45?
You know you can read it online for free! (at least in Spanish u can so I guess in other languages must be there too. English and French for certain and I'm sure there must be Romanian too, won't it? with such an old book that's royalty free... ) Though I don't like to read French authors in English. For some reason is like the translations never really gell... Some of the "flavour" gets lost iykwim

You're invoking MY memory?
It's quite foggy in my brain too, and I Le vicomte de Bragelonne back at home in BA so I can't check but let's see.... It's Artagnan who dies on a siege, the siege of Maastrich I think. Athos (my baby!!!!) dies of sadness after he knows his son is dead , Aramis goes to Spain... I don't remember how he dies at all and Porthos... hmmm... Porthos is like an accident during a fight or something, there's an explosion... that's all I can remember.

I think Aramis is the only one who dies of old age or something like that, because he ends up being a Big Boss or so for the jesuits. He was my baby. I wanted to slap him all the time. So French. Aaaaw Athos, poor man. I loved him. But now I can't think Athos without thinking John Malkovich aka the worst casting choice in the history of cinema. Oh, how that movie made me laugh. I should read Le Vicomte de Bragelonne again, but I can't find those volumes. I only have The Man in the Iron Mask, which only has about half of the story there.
@macha: On another topic, you read La reine Margot and La Dame de Montsoreau and you never finished the 45?
Yep, all of those. I'm sure Mr. Macha has the second volume somewhere, he has books *every*where. But I completely forgot about it until you mentioned it in the chat. A pity too, since I loved the first part of it. I can't read French, so I read them all in Romanian, with the exception of Le Vicomte I think, which I have in English. I didn't like it that much in English, but the Romanian translation was very good. Much better than the translation ASOIAF has, for example.
Oh I can't read them in French either. I wish! But I only can manage to read enough french to do a scavange hunt for data, not to read for pleasure. I read them in Spanish, in several different versions, all good (even with minor typos and stuff like that). But I tried re reading two of them in English and it just didn't convey the same sort of feeling. I bought them for Mr. Tir, who has never read Dumas, and I couldn't get him into it.
But damn my memory... I just can't fucking remember if the 45 deals with Henry's death at all or not? Shoot me. In any case, Chicot steals all the laurels. I just loved so much his interactions with the king, with the priest, with everyone really.
If you get a chance though, do read the Count of Moret. It's main character is, well... Richelieu himself Wonderful book. Loved it. Not reprinted enough though.

Wait, I think the Mr. told me about that one. I should check. Richelieu is my baby. Weren't The 45 Henry's guards or something? If so, yes, I think his death should be there, it's too big of a moment to miss. My baby! ...My babies!
I know... that's why i'm thinking it isn't there? Cause I can't remember? Though with my memory that shouldn't be a measure... In my defense, I read the three books in completely the wrong order the first time.

Ok, I´m sorry, I promess to take this seriously. I´ll start with one of the very few frenchies I love. Charles Baudelaire and my favorite poem in the entire world. Yeah. Here is in english for obvious reasons but I have one wonderful version in spanish. I don´t really know how this translation sounds for you english speaking people.
Destruction
Always the Demon fidgets here beside me And swims around, impalpable as air: I drink him, feel him burn the lungs inside me With endless evil longings and despair.
Sometimes, knowing my love of Art, he uses Seductive forms of women: and has thus, With specious, hypocritical excuses, Accustomed me to philtres infamous.
Leading me wayworn into wastes untrod Of boundless Boredom, out of sight of God, Using all baits to compass my abduction,
Into my eyes, confused and full of woe, Soiled clothes and bleeding gashes he will throw And all the grim regalia of Destruction.
Translation: Roy Campbell, Poems of Baudelaire (New York: Pantheon Books, 1952)

This is getting silly because this thread has the purpose, among other things, to spite me BUT I must be honest. The person Iadmire the most is coincidentally, a Frenchie: her name was Simone Weil. Shewas an incredible lucid woman, intellectuallyhonest, really braveand spirituallynaked. Rareand unforgettablecombination.Philosopher, teacher, mystic, socialactivist and a revolutionary. She was born in Paris in 1909, in a secular jewish family. A tiny fact: at 19 he entered the “Ecole Normale Superior” with the highest rating, followed by Simone de Beauvoir (yeah). But I don´t think this was of any importance for her. I just said it because Simone de Beauvoir rings a bell more than her.
There´s a lot to say about this woman but if you want you can check her philosophie but most of all her thoughts about religion. Very powerful, original and touching.

Well, this is harsh. How do I say this? (because I know you´re hating my guts KC... I like Zidane!). Let´s try blaming someone else! it´s always a good idea. So I studied at film school and some of our culture is very very french in many ways (mostly in big cities, mind you) but this university I went it´s completely french cinema oriented (Nouvelle Vague of course) and is not that I don´t like that cinema, in fact, Truffaut is one of my favorite directors and I liked some of Godard´s movies too (some, hey! Anna Karina) BUT some french critics or even directors made me hate some aspects of this cinema. Like Resnais. Probably I should blame Bazin and Cahiers du cinéma instead. They turned some of these beautiful movies (well, Resnais just made it by himself) into something so intelectuall, boring and even snobbish that it was a pain for me because I think cinema has this incredible quality that no other form of art has (maybe music). Cinema can reach to all audiences, I´m not talking popular shit with no sense at all, but there´s so many fantastic movies that all kinds od people could watch and understand...not just some privileges minds. Am I making any sense? When these guys from the Cahiers started talking about movies and butchering every single fucking shot I got sick of it all. I loved cinema semiotics but boy, it made me hate movies too. And all my teachers studied in France (one of them was Eco´s student). Just stop it! let me enjoy! I came to think these movies were made for wanker snobbish critics. Do you know what I mean? This endless talks about a single shot with a hand opening a door.
Well, I developed a prejudice and never saw a french movie again and suddenly I forget all the things I truly love about your culture. But, maybe thanks to this thread, I´m overcoming it and I already started to tell the truth (like about Simone Weil or Deleuze or Baudelaire or Duby). But, as you can see, I know nothing about your recent artists or writers or directors. Prejudice.
Sorry :shameonme:

I'm the french mascot so i feel very proud you appreciate so much of our unbelievable culture !
Jokes aside, it's a very good title for a french topic !
I will teach you french gross and rude language if you dare...
Some french things i find classy : food, obviously after having travelled a little bit, i always miss our miam miam abroad.
-wine ( but i love Rioja ,vinho verde and hungarian wines as well), especially Bourgogne even if i live near Bordeaux.
-health system
-a lot of writers but the list would be too long. Among contemporaries , i would quote Emmanuel Carrère and Virginie Despentes, this girl kicks asses.
-le café crème
-our endless discussions
-les cafés et les terrasses when summer is here
-strikes
-Paris, i don't live here anymore and it's a pain in my ass, even if this city can be a bitch to newcomers.
-Nouvelle Vague movies (yes and Anna Karina of course) !
-les croissants (sunday morning without them is not a sunday morning), there's a hilarious song by the Flights of the Conchords about that big issue.
-Serge Gainsbourg, Barbara, Alain Bashung, Dominique A, Daniel Darc, Jane Birkin (yes she's officially french to us), Lou Doillon (nice first LP), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Brassens, Philippe Katerine (that guy is so nuts he would deserve to be an english singer) and Vanessa of course.
I don't appreciate much of our "international" actors althought Dujardin is a really nice dude. Depardieu lost his magic skill and i can't bear Cotillard and Tautou.

Vanessa is a lovely singer , she recently worked with a very talented author , Benjamin Biolay (he used to write for Keren Ann), that's really delicious.

Oh but it was the same here. Today everybody loves her in France, but when she was younger she has been despised, mocked and people spitted on her, literally i mean. Gainsbourg said she had a "Bardot syndrom", and it was quite a good sum up.

Don't feel like you have to justify yourself Andrea, i must be really clumsy if you feel like you have to. And i must confess a lot of stuffs to you, i agree so much with what you wrote about french movies (a very good song btw by a belgian dude called Tom barman). How could i begin without being totally boring? We have three major cinema fundamentalists papers in France, les Cahiers that you quoted, Telerama and Positif (linked to communists when it was created), they used to defend very different directors but they are narrow minded, really and elitists. Reading a Cahiers'article can be seen as an exploit, this is awful writing, even for french people. And Marienbad or Hiroshima make me want to sleep endlessly, i know nobody (and i used to see alot of "intellectual stuffs " during my student life) who could watch these films to the end . Even my father who is a "cinephile" 'quite untranslatable word, cinema lover if you would prefer, can't stand these ones and a large amount of french cinema. So don't feel sorry, la Nouvelle Vague was a breath of fresh air in a dusty rusty period wich lacked of invention (only cinema moreover), but some of these movies are unwatchable now (awful Lelouch stuffs...).
Should i confess too that i nearly don't watch french films nowadays, i 'd rather rewatch classics. The only recent thing i could recomend to you is the last film by Noémie Lvovsky "Camille redouble", very funny and smart movie.
There's a weird thing about Resnais' cinema however, the movies he directed lately are far more approchable than the ones i quoted. Do you ever give a try to "On connaît la chanson" (with an actor i love, Jean Pierre Bacri) or to "Mon oncle d'Amérique", they are direct and enjoyable imo ?
And don't feel bad about french contemporary culture (we're such pretentious cunts, we think the whole world has to know our wonderful creations but we are not curious at all), as i already said it, know nothing of argentinian culture except Borges, Bioy casares and Cortazar (who i studied a little bit when i was at lyceum). Forgot Maradona, you're gonna kill me !
oh and i have to add that i hate le Nouveau roman , really hate this , a nightmare to read (Nathalie Sarraute excepted).
To conclude, i have to throw a bunch of talented french people over this thread : Jean Renoir, Christophe Miossec (singer) and La Mano Negra (yes it's french...) .

First , it´s good to know that you think the same about the Cahiers´s elitism (don´t know the others). You´re not clumsy, we never had a french person here so I thought I should explain because it could sound rude.
Oh right, Marienbad was terrible, I hated that movie with a passion, that´s what I meant with the endless close shots. So boring. Sometimes I don´t think that people really likes those movies, they just say it because they think is cool. I have to study those movies. Hell.
But I love Truffaut. He had sould. Yes, I heard comments about Resnais last movies, still, don´t want to watch but could be of course.
I love Renoir and La mano Negra you mean Manu Chao?
