I've been really busy, but I haven't forgotten about this wonderful place. Hope all of you have been ok.
As you know, today it was announced that Oberyn and Mace were being cast, but...! As excited as I am to see the Red Viper, knowing that there's a certain scene with Ser Gregor, I think it wouldn't be the same with Ian Whyte. Nothing against the guy...but he's no Gregor.
What do you think? I'd say Conan Stevens really shined as Gregor in S1, and getting rid of him was a mistake.
Also...
I tweeted to HBO about this, and if you want to support the idea of bringing Conan Back, it would be really cool.
I will tweet them, too! I know that he left to film for The Hobbit - not sure if/when that wraps up but surely they could get him for one measly little fight scene! It would be super awesome!
EDIT: Retweeted and replied!

I believe D&D wanted him back but Conan chose Peter Jackson and his schedule would not allow him to return for S2. I don't think the character requires anyone of any particular acting talent just as long as he is big, and we have that with Ian Whyte , not to mention that his voice is amazing. so my vote is nay, let Conan stay where he is as a CGI goblin. He left GoT. adios sapito.
What Rygar said, all of it. I thought I was the only one who actually likes Ian Whyte.
I have nothing against Conan Stevens and I don't know what went on behind the scenes, but I'm pretty sure no one will bother recasting that part again, it'll be much to confusing to viewers. Plus casual readers don't even know or care about the Mountain - they just remember he severed a horse's head once.
Spoiler
They'll build up his character again in S4, and they'll make the fight between him and the Viper work somehow. I wouldn't get too pumped up about it though, GoT does many great things, but it doesn't excel at fight scenes.
On the other hand, I doubt I'll be disappointed since I was never really that invested in that fight or those characters, come to think of it.
That part always felt rushed and a bit out of the blue in the books. So...whatever works for me.

Conan was amazing in season 1! I read the books after and he was truly the mountain that rides. I think they might bring him back next season as he has been totally gone in season 3, so maybe they are waiting for him to be available.

Thanks for the heads up, Valdred. I don't tweet but if someone wants to tweet for me, that would be great. Did the Mountain have a big part in S2? Nope. We was at Harrenhall with Arya and Tywin, when Jaqen got her out, on the HBO version. Was not impressed.
Spoiler
I am concerned about S4 with the Red Viper, would like to see Conan in that role, but am more vested in the Viper and who they get for that role.
We'll see what Nina Gold has to say.

I'm not too invested on the verosimilitude of the Mountain but to me it IS a big difference wether Connan or someone like him take over the mountain role or they leave it to the lamppost. Cause the later isn't scary, or even memorable. Can anyone honestly believe that the HOUND would be scared of him for starters? I don't think so. He is does not project any sort of intimidation, neither physical or psychological, imo. If they botch the scene because they use their sandcastle of a mountain, that's ok with me because i never cared that much for the scene anyways, but I do believe it will be a difference. And a huge one for those who do care about that plotline.

I actually liked the way Ian looked for the role. The guy is huge, maybe not as wide, but certainly tall and built. Bigger than the Hound for sure. And his head / face fits my mental image of Gregor more so than Conan. I was not a fan of Conans un Westeros like crew cut. But again, the role is fodder and can be filled by anyone with the size to match his book description. Unless D&D decide to take the character in a new direction, there is no need for acting chops. So I am fine either way.

At this point, it shouldn't matter whether the Hound is afraid of him or not, that storyline is long gone and
Spoiler
it's unlikely we'll ever see these two in the same scene again. If they bring a medium height, lean actor for Oberyn and get a good director for that scene, Ian Whyte can be just as imposing even if he doesn't look as menacing as Stevens. If that scene will turn out to be a flop, the fault doesn't lie with the actor or the casting department, it lies with the director.
And honestly, acting chops? I don't remember Conan Stevens blowing me away with his mad acting skills, but maybe that's just me.
Most Tv viewers don't even remember the mountain in S2, Ian Whyte has been good in other parts, but he was pretty underwhelming as Gregor Clegane in S2. But whatever, we shall see what they do in S4.

Well, shit, they can just go out there and cast any giant so long as they keep him (or even her) in a suit of armor with their visor down. Just give them a few lines and it's all good, baby.

He had nothing to do in S2 so of course he was underwhelming. But when he spoke, it was like thunder. lol. And I meant that Conan does not have acting skills and Gregor doesnt need it either.
Lol Tre. Shaq would be perfect!

Totally agree, didn't understand why this Conan Steven's departure was a problem. I didn't realize the cast has been changed between S1 and S2 , i don't care at all to tell the truth. But reading GOT fandom's moanings (even on the french board...), i was really surprised that this could have been such a big deal for people...

Spoiler
that battle is a HUGE part of that book, I can't imagine D&D just putting a nobody in a suit of armour and pushing them out to face the Viper.

Like the duels so far have been exceptional? They seem to be getting worse as we move on. The best one was Jaime vs Ned and that wasn't even in the book.
Spoiler
Don't expect Mountain vs RV to be amazing.
Do expect Ian Whyte to own that scene however. mark my words. And mark it fucking zero!

Too choppy IMO . But it was straight out of the book from what I remember. That scene WAS good, but nothing spectacular. The fighting scenes are not what keeps me coming back for more.

The Jaime Vs Brienne was very different, I felt it lacked some energy.

wut in hell? did someone saw how awful this guy was in Spartacus? I really couldn´t care less about this guy or this character. I think I like Victarion even more and I don´t like (or find amusing) Victarion at all.

Everyone was awful in Spartacus because it was a bad show.
There was a very good article on HBO Watch that addresses Conan Stevens as Gregor Clegane. He discusses playing Gregor and several other things. His audition video for GoT is there and it's very impressive.
He is a very good actor, I've seen him in several things other than GoT. I'm not sure what it was that someone wouldn't like about him in Spartacus, the guy had to learn German for his role and did a fantastic job.
The man is well spoken, who knew! Wow, further impressed with this man. Miss him . Thanks for the heads up, kitten!

I was disappointed by his appearance in Spartacus because he didn't do full frontal. I thought all the male actors had to do that.

Seriously? How have I not seen this show? Will put that on the "must watch" list.

I'm not so sure. I have read his blog and he is not as well spoken there. He had the benefit of an editor. I also don't like how he didn't quash the idea of returning as Gregor. He knows full well that they haven't asked him back so why allude that there still may be a possibility. Most actors would just move along, Conan seems to want to hang on the concept of returning. He seems to be quite busy so he should take the high road and steer people away from the idea.
And I agree with Macha. Ian Whyte hasn't had a scene to show us what he's got. Let's give the boy a chance before we petition for him gone. For me, I'd rather have a nicely written acted, and shot scene, then have someone who just looks the part.

Truth is, I think that what makes me prefer Ian Whyte to Conan Stevens is that he's the underdog. And I always cheer for the underdog. IMO there was never any chance of them bringing him back after they went through the trouble of recasting him, and the fact that *everybody* kept demanding his return just became annoying for me after a while.

With the pivotal fan-favorite scene coming in S4, we shall see. I am looking forward to it!

New flick with Conan Stevens in it, looks good, methinks.
