I'd only previously seen the first season so when I watched yesterdays episode I noticed a huge improvement in the production quality. Quite a dark episde too, the moment when that serial killer popped out from under the bed was creepy.

this really is a disgrace! I might love this show too much to talk my bs about it maybe that´s why I never opened a thread. Watched the episode of course. Yes the moment when the baldy crawled from under the bed was really creepy and so so good.

They don´t waste any time eh? Here´s that Erin bitch again plotting with the mad mad David O´Hara  (i love you, I love you). She´s so good that I really hate her. And she has Justin trapped!  that´s bad bitch.

And then BOOM!, car crash..."do you mind if I take a look?" he asked... lol NO, I feel you blondie. How in hell that beautiful man, he likes to touch here and there damnit, delicate hand in the back, the shoulders, the forehead, I wanted to laugh (because nervous) but I only melted!!!  "So I call you"... lol blondie, sure you will.

I liked the fact that Justin makes all more believable... Luther is so awesome that he just can´t believe it. Yeah, we know.

And yes, Salladhor Saan is here for the mistery.

Now...whur´s Paul McGann and my dear dear Alice?

First episode was grrrreat. Everything felt intense, I was literally jumping in my seat. At first I thought the whole "let's meet in a basement to investigate Luther" was cheesy as hell, but boy did David O'Hara sell it. By the end of the balcony/terrace scene, I completely changed my mind and thought it was brilliant. And speaking of brilliance, their cast for this season is so good I wanna scream. Lucian Msamati and Idris Elba in that kitchen? OH YES PLEASE MORE OF THAT.

Blondie is sweet. Too sweet. I miss Alice, dammit.
Erin, you can get out. Justin, you can get out too, ye little Judas. bitchslap

The killer freaks me out! freakout Lol, that scene in the attic, are you for real? Imma just sit here wrapped in plastic and wait for you to stare at me for half and hour while you decide if I'm in a coma or just a really creepy stranger who'll smash your head through the ceiling. /facepalm

That scene in the attic was crazy, I can't even imagine how petrified that poor lass was.

Oh Lord, I'm still having nightmares about the attic scene!!! And I must confess I'm acting a lot more concious near my blender. But I don't care. LUTHER IS BAAAAAAAAAACK. yippie

Wut the flying f***? No Alice in the preview for next week's episode? It's the last one, FFS! UGH. I am madly in love with this show but godfuckingdammit. It literally hurts my brain to think that they have this amazing character which they simply don't use. And NO, those meep-meeps from Monte Carlo are not enough.

Justin, you little shit, I did not expect that.
David "Stark" O'Hara, you have an epic voice and I love you too much for words. Never leave my screen.
Erin, why don't you go and have a leap year in Provence or something, and cool off. Find yourself a nice good man while you're at it. I suggest Justin.
Ben, I've loved you since S1. "Dickhead" . You adorable geeky badass. Your beard would look good on GoT.
Mary, you and your beautiful cheekbones can just go away, because you're adorable and I don't want to like you since you're obviously too nice to be important in the long run.
Creepy killer, you were awesome. And your face reminds me of Balon. So you can come and be Victarion, mkay?
John, you have a killer apartment and your shoes have red soles to match your fabulous tie. You color coordinate like a boss, but I didn't took you for the type that makes his bed. I don't know how to feel about that, but thou swagger knows no limits. You can also pull a nice Batman (car roof scene). Now how can we get you to be the next James Bond, hm....?

PS: Ned Dennehy was superb! Boy, he gets the creepiest roles.

Edit: So wait, there are four episodes? I thought there were only three this series. Oh goody!

This series... ugh love it. David O´Hara drunk out of his ass hiding the bottle wut? and Erin bitch pretending all is well and under control? gurl, it´s David O´Hara, he´s "not right in the head". You people will go down... ALICE IS COMIN´ (is Alice coming?)

So many goodies. The creepy guy on wheelchair sooo good (is he on Got? because ye know, he´s perfect), he always gets the creepers, I saw him somewhere playing a horrible priest or something. The spinning Luther on the chair... or lol I know, just caught my attention because it´s Luther spinning in his chair. Who cares if we do that? Is it God spinning his chair??? If I were god I´d play with Luther too I guess.

The script! Salhador slashed his hand all for nothing... isn´t that pretty?

The persecution scene that was not a real persecution but had the emotion of one. So fucking good. It broke all the cinema rules for editing I know. Creating the movement and the vertigo just going from really close shots to larger shots. If I´m not mistaken all the directions of the shots are wrong in a good way. Still shots to shots in movement. Great editing! and great music! I´m a disaster to watch a movie or whatever and pay atention to musica at the same time but not with this show.

The detail: that pic with the three nurses that Luther saved, the one Ben gave to creepy dickhead... did someone see how Luther is standing in that pic? amazing... all bent by pain and tragedy and fatigue.

The scene when Luther found them in that... wut was that? a sewing workshop? perfect place to plot against Luther. That was good. You suck Erin, learn to choose! god I hate that bitch. I tell you, Alice is comin´ for ye. And yippie I knew it! Fucking Justin is awesome!

So Alice for episode 4? you better Elba, I just like you because you´re Luther, don´t forget that. You are the producer, you are to blame if she´s not there.  The meep meep tho , detail again and never too much.

Yes yes that girl is sweet and a beauty, we´ll see what David and the bitch will do with her.

Who said just 3 episodes? that´s just criminal. Can´t be true.

I saw him as a priest too! Wait, where was that.....Parade's End?

He auditioned for Vargo/Locke at some point so yes, bring this man in GoT, he's too wonderfully creepy.

Also, andi mentioned the directing and the editing, and I'm always amazed at that. It's *so* good. God, that Batman scene, with the spinning and Luther on the car roof. Ugh, brilliantly shot. And the color combinations of greys and reds! This could possibly be my favorite show.

Episode 3 wasn't as good as the previous two IMO. Not really digging the whole Death Wish/Harry Brown angle, and to kill Justin off like that was a bit much

The good news is it looks like a certain gal will be back next week.

Oh Justin, I knew you were a goner from the moment Ben told you to be safe out there.
Wut, no more Stark?
Also, John's pencil matches his tie.
Also, the music over the ending credits - who was that? Loved it.
Also, Alice comin'.

yep. Would have been a lot more interesting if Justin had not died, not because I liked him a lot (and I did damnit ) but because they killed him just to make you hate the *justice is mine* guy because of course you can´t make that guy right, right? that only Clint Eastwood can do well. There were another things in this show I didn´t like but I never care about them... this one tho was a very cowardly/lazy way to dodge the bulk and you have to hate lazy writing (ring a bell???grrm). Are they saying a true killer like Alice is better than a "righteous" one? evileye That I didn´t like but still many goodies, little things. When Luther said: "he´s mah mate and I love him" I shivered... damn man, we know what happens to people you love. And Justin´s face like "wtf am I looking at here, love?"

Oh wait, this another thing I didn´t like, when Erin and crazy Stark played heavy with Mary... c´mon! that wasn´t good. Grrrr. And why she fucking believed them? Mary, a hair on Alice´s head worth more than you.

Luther was all mushy in this episode: "they are lying" call the whaaambulance?

Crazy Stark and this line: "I´ll put the kettle on" So now Erin is scared... wut do you expect from that guy? Yes bitch, your mind is full of scorpions allright.

Lol, there´s a shot in that place where Luther meets with the in law (of righteous killer), you can see a big sign that says STARK...hmmm foreshadowing?

So rip Justin, I´ll miss you although Alice is fucking finally coming... I guess they´ll replace your loyalty with hers. Nice crazy look in that preview shot of her btw.

It seemed like an end yes but we don´t know the plan Stan. I don´t think there´s nothing more to say tho.

Again this episode was sloppy for me and still I don´t care. How in hell they arrested Luther. Wut evidence?, lol. That shot in the mirror when Tom is destroying Luther´s aparment First time for me to find a silly detail like that one but there´s so many others really good... had an Alice binge just after I thought Alice, we need you, kill the bitch already... and then how did she know they will be there? who the fuck cares!

"I always wanted to be a widow" there ya go Sam, always hated that sentence in GoT but loved it from her. " Hello Tinkerbell? you bitchsmile.  Her faces were priceless in every single shot, her little chuckles. A nail stupid :eyeroll

Ah David, you can´t be crazier than Alice so to hell with ye. So quick. But when you think about it... what was the point of his character?

Did I scream KILL HER, KILL THAT BITCH NOW!? but Erin survived.

pick? pick? lol, how we got to that terrace? It´s true that Luther and Alice are great characters and they are great together but that script was a bit of a mess. STILL DON´T CAAAAAAAAAAARE.

Macha, I´ll swimrace you for Luther´s coat! get in the water ducky!

Please tell me that wasn't the last ever series of Luther?

Ruth Wilson is a sensuous minx but she's a very talented actress, I really hope she's able to have a career in Hollywod.

Yeah when they arrested Luther I was really scratching my head at that moment. On what ground were they able to cuff him because he had a conversation with the vigilante? erm ok then lol.

I was laughing so hard at Stark's death, it reminded me so much of a certain Dark Knight Rises moment.

Yep, basically this. The writing was really sloppy this episode. Actually, make that the whole 3 season. It's like they just wanted the characters to reach certain points, and they struggled to connect the dots but lost the substance along the way.

We *need* Luther to be under investigation, but we're not gonna really bother to make it look realistic. We *need* a nemesis we *need* Justin to die, and so on. Somehow as a whole they pulled it off because it was freaking awesome. But if I were to dissect it, then there were a lot of inconsistencies - like for example the shooting of the mirror moment which definitely seemed out of character to me, for someone who wants to be filmed that badly as the killer wanted. And yes, in retrospect what was Stark's point in all of this? He had ZERO impact on the story and the other characters, except for maybe making Erin feel a bit bad about herself.

But like andi said, all in all, who cares? The acting was brilliant, the directing was fabulous, we got to see Alice again and @#$%^&&^ that last scene on the bridge was a great way to wrap it all up. Very reminiscent of S1 too.

I tried watching this show. I watched the first six episodes or so. And I just can't. Luther's a fascinating character, and his relationship with Alice is intriguing, but I need more than that. There isn't anything else besides the dynamic between those two characters worth watching. It's too contrived. And it's too episodic for my tastes. Sorry to be a party pooper.

No need to apologize I agree with your views. Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson were the reason I liked the show, the side characters and episodic plots were pretty meh.

I don't see why they just don't do and American version with Idris. I mean it's not like he can't handle the accent.

HBO would turn Luther into a sex machine or some shit. Not at all the original idea.

And wut`s going on here? Secondary characters are not interesting??? Season 1 and 2 were full of great secondary characters. Justin, hello??? He was amazing! and DCI Erin Gray??? that bitch was awesome! Paul McGann? Saskia Reeves? Indira Varma? and Jenny???  and Dermot Crowley the boss? wutwutwut? You watched some other series not the Luther I watched.

And I don`t think it was episodic, although I`m not sure what that means but if it is what I think, it wasn´t episodic at all. There was always a storyline appart from the relationship between Luther and Alice. Even the last season (which wasn´t very good) was all about that!!! Is Luther corrupt? anyone??? The greatness of Justin and Erin characters served only for that storyline. calmyotits

And yes, as Macha said, wut about the cinematography? the dialogues? the music??

I`m shocked, shocked!!!patrick

It just couldn't keep my attention, Andrea. What I meant by episodic is that every episode has its own storyline that is introduced and completely wrapped up in one episode. I don't like that. The stories are too simplistic because they have to resolve them so quickly. There's no time for the story arc to blossom and suspense to build. If Luther just worked on two or three big cases per season, it would be a much better show. I feel too much like I'm watching Law and Order or NCIS or some other generic law enforcement show. The characters just aren't good enough to get past that.

That actually happens in S2 and S3, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, I beg to differ, Al. I have watched great series on HBO, but if I were to choose overall, the BBC easily tops it. So let's just agree it's a matter of taste, because I really don't want to get into a discussion over the definition of "quality".

The difference between HBO and the BBC is one IMO has created two shows which are easily worthy of the title "Greatest TV Show Of All Time."

Just think of the production qualities HBO could bring to Luther. And lets not forget about the depth in world class directors and actors that network lures in. Imagine an episode of Luther directed by Tim Van Petten.

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to see this on HBO, instead of appreciating the different styles of tv-making by BBC and HBO you'd want everything rehashed in the style you prefer? I see Life on Mars and the Sopranos as equals in quality and if The Sopranos was made by the BBC or Life on Mars by HBO they would both have sucked.

Basically what Japie said. I don't want all of my series looking the same way. There are so many amazing directors working on BBC shows, most of them pretty unknown, and they all bring something fresh. HBO has fantastic shows in their own right, and the BBC has other ones, and I don't see why we should compare them, especially since - like Japie said - they all look and feel so different. I don't want to imagine an episode of Luther directed by Tim Van Patten because that wouldn't be the Luther I liked in the first place.
Overall and so far, even if I am totally in love with shows like Treme or The Wire, the BBC gives me more to choose from, which is easy seeing how many shows and mini-series they produce each year. Not to mention documentaries and other programmes.
I also can't put the network that gave us "The Newsroom" on a pedestal. It's a great network with some great shows. That's it.

Who`s van Patten btw? not on my list of great directors. But nop, don`t tell me.

For me the best thing HBO has is not the directors but the writers and not all of them.

Van Patten is the guy who directed the first episode of GOT after McCarthy left.

Tim's also directed alot of episodes for great HBO shows like Boardwalk, The Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood, The Wire and The Pacific.
