I'm thinking about waiting till next Sunday to watch the last two episodes back to back. We'll see if I have the will power.
Great idea Basi! I really love it! I'm in!!

Nope, saw them both. The black lady interview MM was great with her. Lawnmower man talking about his family, mowing in circles. Symbolism of how this has gone on for generations? Something deeper than that mayhaps, just don't want to hurt my brain trying to figure it all out. Glad those two are back together, good for both of them. Hope dirty cop ends up sleepin' with the fishes

Well then. It is big. I was so glad they are working together too. "Took some convincing" is what Hart said, but all he needed to really see it was that video with Marie Fontenote. I have to say, I was half covering my eyes because I was afraid to see.
Ep was slower than the other ones, but I liked it.
Ep was slower than the other ones, but I liked it.
The pace was completely different. I expected it to be very intense and fast-paced. They surprised me by just letting the story unfold. I loved it. And next week it all comes together.
I didn´t really expected an intense episode... had no idea what would happen and I should say that MM accent (the "s" chuskita said) makes a bit hard to understand the english so I´ll watch again with subs this time, just in case I lost something.
After all the build up it seemed weird the way this episode unfolded the story... well, maybe not the story but the investigation. It was... soft and very calm? Even the way they solved their problems. Like "how you doing?" doing good?, "yeah, you know, ok" bladiblah. Weird.
Same with spaghetti face. It was just me being dizzy or was this way?
Oh and I know MM´s acting has been great but the scene with WH at the bar, first time they got together again... wow, his expression, the way he talked. Amazing.

Yes, there was something effortless about the way the story unfolded that I really liked.
I was thinking this morning about Rust's comment about why he came back. It sounds very much like he intends to kill himself, but can't leave this one piece of business unfinished. I thought about what a different world we would live in if everyone who wanted to die performed one last act that would make their lives complete. And I wonder how much Rust thinks about time being circular. He can't die and leave those people out there over and over again.
“I’ve enjoyed reading people theorize about what’s going to happen because it’s a sign that you’re connecting,” Pizzolatto told me. “But I’m also sort of surprised by how far afield they’re getting. Like, why do you think we’re tricking you? It’s because you’ve been abused as an audience for more than 20 years. I cannot think of anything more insulting as an audience than to go through eight weeks, eight hours with these people, and then to be told it was a lie—that what you were seeing wasn’t really what was happening. The show’s not trying to outsmart you.”
and this, because I hated The Usual suspects... thought that movie was terrible:
“It really isn’t. Exactly. I knew the guy was dead as soon as he showed up after being gut shot in the second close. It was the same thing with The Usual Suspects. It was like, “Wait a minute. Don’t tell me this whole thing is just a lie. Because if it just a lie, what parts of the movie were true? Maybe none of it. What did we just sit here watching?
I´m waiting for a simple ending as I wanted the whole thing to be simple from the start.

I posted a terrible thing to read at IWC? so Imma do the same here . You all need punishment (or just avoid the turd I`m about to post).
Sorry Karsa, couldn´t choose where to keep blaming you .
So much going on. I didn´t want to pay attention to all this but it´s just impossible. The characters are saying too much to ignore it. I thought the author was too transparent in this show, that he was really using his characters to say things he wanted to say... of course that´s obvious, is what you want as an author, but thought that was too much sometimes, (mostly through Rust at first), but now I like it because he´s using the whole story and the dialogues to unfold the plot in an organic way. Not just through the existencial blahdiblah.
Sorry, I`m quite lost with all this. But, for example, at first he had Rust rumbling about the flat circles and the M-Brain Theory but now Rust (the character) is really applying it to his life, as Karsa said (not here): "My whole life is nothing more than an expanding circle of fuck up and i think I`m about to close it being arrested in a raid" and then again: I´m not looking the other way. Not again" and "My life has been a cycle of violence and degradation since I can remember. I'm ready to close it". And it will be " one motherfucking big onion" to peel (lol Karsa), fosho. But there´s Marty too trying to close things, like we all I guess. He´s talking about the macrowaved baby and said: "I don´t want to see that, never again". And of course, the whole thing with his family that looks closed but, who knows. Maggie seems still angry or concerned about him, at least.
So, I liked that very much because I enjoy the plot that way and not if the author is all the time raising his voice to bullshit me with his philosophy, lemme find it myself. Pizzollato can´t help it tho because this episode had Marty talking for him with the new police boss when he said he´s trying to write a book (lol) about the murders: "True Crime" and that´s the genre not the title". As this story is based on real crimes committed by real monsters this is a true cops story. As Pizzolato is saying "stop speculating people, what you see is what you get, I`m not lying to you". Maybe not true detective but detective of the truth. Ugh, sorry, this is as painful to me as it is for you but this show finally grabbed me by the neck (still blaming Karsa!).
Yes, I too think The yellow king is a concept... there was and there will be yellow kings, no matter how many circles you close, it´s inevitable, apparently we are here to fuck things up, our children, women, etc. Idk, maybe we are all yellow kings in some degree. "You people, this place, you eat your fucking young", Rust said. Like the yonky that tried to cooked the baby). No shit.
My question about Maggie. If her father has something to do with the murders, if he´s Tutle´s friend and one that´s part of the yellow king, and if they offered their daughters as sacrifice (I think it was said at some point)... why nothing happened to Maggie? why skipped a generation and abuse just Marty´s daughter? While chatting with Papania and Gilbough she said (tho maybe not important): "In a former life, I used to exhaust myself navigating crude men who thought they were clever. So ask your questions or I'm leaving." Is she talking about her life with Marty or something else?
And last thing, THE SPRAWL Rust can´t stop talking about: Sam Tutle (probably the yellow king if you want to put that in one person in this circle of the fucking onion) had other children with other women, (the virgins), "the other family" (or one of those families) as Rust and Marty said talking to Miss Delores, and that family´s lastname is Childress (so spaghetti face is Sam Tutle´s grandchild but a Childress) who the fuck is the other Childress they were talking about in the golf course or in the boat? the guard at the prison where whathisface killed himself after a phonecall? "Death is not the end" (of the Tutle´s offspring/sprawl) Miss Delores said, maybe because they´ll live in their sons and daughters or in some other Yellow king.
Sorry, sorry, too long, I know.

I read Karsa's Onion theory and I was thinking: is Rust moving to an outer layer or inner one. That's the point at which I knew I've read way too much about the show! I'll just have to enjoy the ending on Sunday.
Rust I was bawling, I thought he was dead. Had an after life/death experience. Needed to come back, for some reason, something left undone. Mayhaps to put that senator away? Guess we won't ever know. And no closure with Woody's daughter? I was sure she was messed with when she was little in some way. Some boy on the playground? One of those Tuttles messed with her? We'll never know, shan. Misdirection? Thoughts peeps

My God! I thought both died! It was a little slow there at the end, a lot of conclusion but I liked it.
It was the green paint all along. Cannot believe it was a painting contractor. That actually is genius. Under radar, moves along with the job, goes unnoticed. No one would suspect it. Well no one but Marty.
Also I liked the car and hospital back and forth. Just like in the beginning. Nothing ever changes LOL Giving themselves the finger was hilarious. And when Rust muses on the inherent judgmental beings we are as sentient meat aka human beings, Marty has the funniest come back: what is "scented meat"? HAHAHAHHAH
I have to say I loved the fact Rust came full circle on his theory of being part of something. He was part of a triangle of love: him, his daughter and his father. Plus now it was him that sent the message of hope there at the end. When Marty says that looking at it objectively darkness has a lot more territory, so it looks like it is winning, Rust contradicts him: "You are looking at it wrong. Before there was only darkness. Now the light is winning" (by simply existing, is left unspoken)
I will always love stories about goodies and goodness and good people who fights against all the wrong things in this world but I´m still chewing this ending. I`m not saying I didn´t like it, it was a hell of a story and so well told. I guess I expected grim grim grim and no hope because....

That ending couldnt have been more perfect.

Amazing show, amazing story, glad they didn't go into the supernatural as some speculated.
It was pretty dumb that both trained police officers ran headfirst into the killers lair, but they were so close I understand their drive to go after the guy no matter what.
So....what is the conclusion on the "Yellow King"?
And man, the second season will have BIG shoes to fill, especially with a new cast incoming.

MM broke down. Its all been about his daughter. His nihilist mask finally came off.
Best thing about the finale, hands down. That and all the symbolism come to life. Amazing! But yeah, MM's mask came off, just as Childress said. That blew me away. And the last comment about the light winning. What a spiritual journey Cohles has been on. It's going to be many, many years before there's another show that can top what TD has done. Absolutely brilliant.
Oh, and I loved Childress calling Cohles "little priest." Chilled me to the bone.
Rhaegar, despite wounding Robert, was struck down with a massive blow from Robert's warhammer, which scattered the rubies encrusted in Rhaegar's armor under the water. Rhaegar died with Lyanna Stark's name on his lips.
Loved the finale. Even though the show hasn't completely won me over, the finale was excellent in so many ways. Fantastic acting by WH and MM both. I'm glad they went for a more uplifting ending, since all the other episodes left me feeling drained, up to the point I seriously considered stopping. I'm glad I didn't though, it really was great television.
Very underwhelmed by the finale, like by the last few episodes, and I suppose when all it's said and done, by the show as a whole. It had a good premise, and despite my initial reticence both actors did end up proving me wrong, since they've both been very good in their roles. It was a pleasure to watch them, they were both very good. I did like that the characters not only acted but talked and had thoughts and ideas, but it often became too much, too wordy, too forced, too repetitive. The atmosphere was great, but atmosphere doesn't equal tension, and that was lacking. The action was most of the time overindulgent and, to me, ( i know this is just me but and many other folks here enjoyed it ) never riveting or thrilling or edge-of-ur-seat stuff. The story moved at snail pace, dragging its feet, and pacience didn't pay off.
The finale itself? The pace seemed all over the place. Hated the cartoon villain, the super dragged out scene at she-lob's lair, and the looooong wordy last few bits at the hospital. It felt it was never gonna end! Liked the "mask" thing, and the "little priest" was gold. Felt cheated at Rust surviving, but I'll happily forgive it cause it gave us that beautiful phrase about light and darkness.
And last but not least, who the heck was the yellow king?

You know, the whole symbolism with the yellow king and Carcosa etc just flew over my head. I had to google it to know what all those references were about, and it never stuck with me. To me the whole show equaled atmosphere (though you're right about the tension, this never felt like a thriller/mystery drama/cop show to me), great acting and that amazingly staged action scene in episode...I forget. Three? Oh and the credits, which I absolutely loved.

Some research on the actual book the yellow king and on Corcosa and the entire H.P. Lovecraft world.
The yellow king author was an influence on lovecraft.
Corcosa is a city on a planet in another universe, its a universe that if we visited would instantly drive us insane, (so would seeing the play "The Yellow King").
The only way to access this other universe is through ancient incantations, occult activity and performing abominations which twist our reality to the point that a gateway opens, that gateway would lead to that other universe.
What Rust saw was that gateway, chances are you have to be a bit clairvoyant to even sense it but Rust is a fairly deep and "sensitive" (as in clairvoyant) character.
I also know that the writer is ok with you thinking its not real, in fact he would prefer most people think it was a hallucination of Rusts, the "reality" of the show is that Rust saw a portal to another dimension, created from sheer pain, terror and horror beyond normal human experience but the writer knows that the underlying supernatural references might turn off the hardcore "detective" type TV watchers, in other words he wants the skeptics to remain skeptical but wants to tip the hat to the sci fi/horror lovers out there, the ones that know better.
Btw, all these ideas were also used by Clive Barker when he made Hellraiser, the idea that pain was a whole other dimension and that we could access that dimension by creating abominations, in hellraisers case it was the lament configuration, in the True Detectives case it was the occult torture and killing of people, same ideas.

It was all about her wanting to have kids and suddenly he confides in her that having children is immoral and she's all like... "OMG you could have told me this at some point after I confessed I wanted babies and before I got as seriously invested in a relationship as I have been."
'OMG MY OVARIES!"

Just about to watch Ep 3 ..thoughts so far , loving: The titles, songs , acting (intensely) not loving : The need to drink and smoke whenever present MM is on , was starting to feel the pace dragging a bit oh yeah and I didn't need the swinging tits , thanks all the same . I didn't find that scene evocative just awkward, but hey ho , sex sells... Ok, ep 3 .
HBO are putting forward True Detective for best drama at the Emmys instead of best mini series. So basically they seem to have no interest in trying to acquire that award for GOT
