Martin provided us that samplechapter because there is no plotprogress or major revelations in it. This has always been the case with chapters he put on his website. Since every Bran-chapter from now on will have probably major impact (hence his few chapters in ADWD) he will never give us one of those. Most likely he will not have written one either way, but that's a whole 'nother story.
I'm in with a little of everyone here. Do not need all the ad nauseum details he (GRRM) puts in here i.e., shades, food, steps, etc.. Does seem like an old DWD left over chapter. I for one love her becoming an assassin, she and her sister are opposite sides of a coin. As far as she knows, her family is wiped out save for Jon Snow and Sansa and Sansa married to Tyrion, which would never happen to a Stark, in her father's lifetime. It's a coping mechanism, survival, and yes, revenge. I do wish he would get on with Nymeria, that's what pisses me off. Get her back to her wolf, damn it. As to the rape stuff, it's all around her and she's been exposed to it/seen it before, no doubt. She just puts herself into the character and it's a bit of an out-of-body experience. It's happening to someone else entirely.
I've read the comments about "Mercy" and I agree with this. I actually enjoyed reading it even though it was not comfortable reading at times. I did actually wonder/fear if "Izembaro" would entail some sort of courtesan training because Arya might be made to learn to use "feminine wiles" as a way to get close to her intended victims, so to have this stage shown as Mummer's training was a bit of a relief at first, but then the whole letting Raff come onto her was pretty disquieting as GRRM no doubt meant it to be ( the ol' perv! ).
I think GRRM is definitely pushing for a reverse redemption path with Arya...which does kind of make me sad rather than celebrating her bad-assery.

I just found out today there is out there a Theon preview chapter for TWoW (Thank you so much Jent! ) I looked in the other threads for the Theon preview chapter but I don't see any link to it (I did see mention of Arienne, Barristan, Tyrion and the Mercy one here). I found one so this for those like me who had no idea!
That was me Strider! I demand trial by combat with Jent for the credit!
Oops! How about credit goes to both!
I liked the chapter. I think it showcases Stannis the King even better than some of the other Davos/Jon chapters where he features. I also noticed how the Braavos trip was bent and fitted in the show the book counterpart being Tycho going to Stannis and Massey now going to Braavos.
LOL He said he won't release any more excepts from TWoW about a year ago... But look at this: grrm.livejournal.com/415405.html I wonder what made him change his mind.

Is that a rhetorical question? He released it for the same reason he released the Mercy chapter -- to stay ahead of the show for as long as is GURManly possible.
The sample chapter is total filler. Not that anyone should expect him to release a substantive chapter: gotta save the juicy stuff for TWOW. This one (along with the Arianne chapter) had all the hallmarks of GURM's played-out prose style. TWOW is going to suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Reading this chapter made me actually want him to release TWOW, just so everybody could see how terrible his writing has become over the years, not even the worse sycophants can stand for this. Also, a tourney in the middle winter doesn't exactly sounds like a good idea.
My god, what an incredibly boring chapter. A bunch of useless characters I don't give a shit about scheming? Wow, can't think why I wouldn't be excited about that!
I thought TWOW was going to suck before, but wow. This was incremental progress when the story should be accelerating.

It wasn't actually. But he answered it anyway. http://grrm.livejournal.com/416453.html. I think the publishers was where it really is at. Fans have been asking for a long time and he didn't post anything. I would have said stay ahead of the show if there were ANY proof that he spoils the show. At all. But he doesn't. The chapter doesn't spoil absolutely jack shit. So I think you are just plain wrong. I can't believe no one here liked it. I did, I thought it was a good Sansa chapter.
Spoiling the show has nothing to do with it. Show Sansa passes book Sansa in a few weeks. By releasing the chapter, whether or not it was his intent, GURM stays just a little ahead for just a little longer. The books become relevant for just a smidge more. Pretty soon, the show is canon for us. For all of us. Brave new world. I am ready.
The chapter doesn't spoil anything because nothing really happens in it. Because it is filler. Filler is not always a bad thing. It has its place and it may be entirely appropriate for TWOW, but we won't know for sure until it comes out.
Cubs win the division this year. It is known.

Well, there were elements of it that were good, like Sansa scheming and sassing Harry. But it also had a lot more Robin (who is insufferable), more May Stone, Lyn Corbray and Myranda Royce (who I couldn't care less about) and the Mouse guy (who has been developed so poorly that he's boring as a threat), than it had the stuff I liked. Not to mention the usual overblown description.

It's a set-up chapter. Necessarily filler. You can't have Sansa come out of the gate as a player so (if that is what happens) this type of chapter is needed for pacing. That said, everything else has all the subjective elements of GURM's writing that I absolutely detest.
C-
I'd give it a C or C+, but GURM is an ass.

So let's see:
A tourney in the middle of winter (when last i read, the eyrie all the way up was freezing and that's the reason they had to go down to the lower parts of the vale in the first place);
endless random people who we'll probably not remember five minutes after reading about them (i sure don't);
a 12 foot lemoncake (which is probably what gurm dreams of, and i do believe he could eat it alone);
more Robert (yaaaayyy...);
more unnecessary archaism, that instead of adding flavor to the story just feels shoehorned and actually detracts from the immersion;
no identifiable characters, or someone to "root" for and definitely no contestants or antagonists to be spoken of. let's not kid ourselves, Myranda is completely irrelevant (except maybe Robert? so kudos for gurm for making me want to kill another child, i mean Jeffrey was like 16?);
I know this chapter serves a necessary step in the story - Harry had to be introduced and we need to see Sansa's progress as a character, granted - but the setting he chose, and the excessive style of the narrative just robs so much of it that it's such a drag to read this.
I haven't finished reading it yet, but well.... i'll try later, but i just shutter at the thought of trying!
It kind of gets better toward the end. It's nice to see book Sansa actually seem in control of the conversation. I can almost see her dressed up as Dark Sansa.

Don, by the looks of it they are really talking about the Arienne chapter Martin already posted online a year ago. This is not new chapter really, he just read it again at some conference (Bubicon I think). And looking at the reference link the IBTimes put is that click bait site Venture capital post. It runs made up stuff about Martin every once in a while or recycles old news so they can get more clicks.
This chapter is seriously dreadful, though after the rest of Arianne, and her first sample chapter, it was to be expected. Seriously, two whole chapters just to show Arianne travelling to meet Aegon. Forward momentum is completely alien to GRRM at this point. And he couldn't have, I don't know, shown something as awesome as the taking of Storm's End in an actual chapter? Arianne walking with her bland companions was more important or worthy than that?
That paragraph where he lists all the different types of flowers and trees in the local forest? That's borderline self-parody.

Is this another of his shit pieces written for ADwD that he keeps recycling for TWoW? I didn't bother to read it and I doubt I'll read any of his next books, should he ever publish something again. The guy has no respect, for himself or for his fans.

I bet D&D sat down with GRRM and saw that 80% of the next two pooks are travelogues and went fuckit, we gotta move this shit along!
