So here it is. This is the place to if you want to talk about your fitness habits/exercise hobbies/sports you practice etc.
Up until last year i was a sedentary, overweight guy with a high blood pressure and several unwanted visits to the doctor, not emergencies but still some concerning signs that some changes needed to be made. So i joined a gym, lost 10 kilos in five months and improved my health a lot.
If you guys want to share your experiences go ahead! Personal goals, current progress, PR'S, etc.
Bodybuild kind of stuff, more volume, different groups each day. It's the dominant stuff on gyms in general but i've been insisting for them to change it to more functional stuff, not really strenght training but more exercises that will work more than one group of muscles at once.
I love long distance running. Oddly I am built like a line-backer, but I have never been a competitive person and running kinda lets you do your own thing.
At my peak I ran 10k without stopping, but I have slacked off bad ...gotta find motivation to start again.

I like the "runners high" thing but that only happens if i ran 25-30 mins max. More than that and im wasted. My runs are 5 min run 5 walking for a 40min period.

ok ok I swim. I used to swim a lot and then not so much and now, after I quit smoking, I swim a lot again. 2000 meters in 1 hour, 3 hours a week. And the other days I walk and I`m starting to run again after... too many years without running. Can´t run a lot because of my ankle and my spine and blah blah blah but I´m trying a bit more every day.
Oh and I love my bike.
I played all kinds of sport but I`m no material for gyms, I don`t think I lifteda dumbbell (or whatever it is) in my life.

Awesome Dolan! you did really good. :applause: I am a sports person. Played highschool and college volleyball until I did something and broke myself. I never played again. Last 4-5 years did yoga a lot and some kickboxing classes until this year. Now I just do yoga and only once in a while because I got lazy. Will get my stuff together though. I always do. Eventually.
Oh, I like cardio and I do own a bunch of dumbells. But they are gathering dust as I type. Boy, I feel bad now LOL
Going to the gym brings out my competitive side, and I push way harder than I should. I end up injured within a few weeks. So it's much better for me to use weights at home. I just have a few barbells, but they do the job.
wait, I`m lying. Did pilates last year. Loved it and there you lift lotsa weights, you just don´t see them. TW you might like it, I found it a way more fun than yoga, which I tried and I liked but is not for me. I need moving.

My brother is doing something he calls "Bro-ga." I think it's yoga with power moves. He says it has really helped him, and wants me to try it. I need more convincing.

what you need it´s competition!

I think turning yoga into an actual bodyweight exercise completely changes it. To a point i think it shouldn't even be called yoga. I mean, you're supposed to be focused, calm, its a really introspective, psycological exercise, it should ve a kind of meditation really. I'm not saying theres no merit to it, bodyweight exercises will work your ass off, but yoga should be about the spirit not building muscle. Your brother did right when he changed the name bas, i'm not calling out anyone here, this is just a little rant of mine against what people do to yoga in general.
My bro does enough meditative stuff that he doesn't need to add more. I suspect this bro-ga actually more pilates than yoga, but I haven't seen the routines he's doing. It struck me as funny that they've renamed so it sounds manly.

I never tried Pilates. I did check out 2 classes but those machines look like torture instruments. So I stuck with Yoga. I may try again
So I'm starting again a workout program! I have to. I have become a couch potato.
I'm typing here in hopes I will be ashamed to NOT start tomorrow. Just putting it in writing somewhere where people can see and ask me: so how's your workout plan going? I can't really lie without giving myself away about small stuff (avoid, yes, totally) so this seems like a good shaming into shape thread.
Dolan, those weights will come in handy. I got some DVDs for upper body workout.
I actually like running, but first i got shin splints, when that healed i got tendonitis on my left tigh, grumble, grumble, grumble...
I do most of my cardio on the elyptic machine and bike nowdays, to protect my weak ass left leg, but im gradually increasing my threadmill time.
I think it comes from by left-handed, my right arm is real weak too, and the right leg is stronger cause thats where i support my weight more, i guess.
TW, i find it that weightlifiting is better if you want to loose weight, you can add some dynamic/functional stuff if you find the regular stuff boring, as some people do.
Still lots of pain in right ankle (bad sprain and osteochondritis for said sprain) so running is not easy but I love to run if I can ran fast, don´t ask, I just can´t do it slowly though I´d love to. So I ran rrrrreally fast for 30 seconds, walk for 30 seconds and then run like the wind again! I hope I´d be able to run at a different pace when the ankle heals completely. I feel like I fall appart every time I run tho

Interval training with sprints like that is great andi, you burn calories like a furnace! But you should spare your ankle while it's healing gurl! Just wait a month or two.
I wish i could do sprints on the threadmill, but im afraid to fall off lol
So i just do 10 mim jogging 5 walking, now that the shin splints are healed i think i'll lose all the extra weight - i gained 4 kilos since i stopped running, though part of that was muscle mass i noticed my belly is a bit more flacid so theres probably some fat accumulated.
I tried running the way I used to but I can't seem to do it so I just stick to DVD cardio and weights. Something is wrong with my breathing. And I'm not joking. It's like my lungs just forgot the rhythm. Because I used to have a rhythm when I ran before. Sorry to here about your ankle Andrea. I think it's good with the intervals! You probably can out swim us all though.

Thanks for the worries peeps but that happened to me almost a year ago and I was immobilized for 3 months (people here saw my grey swollen foot). I think the problem was that I recovered the movement thanks to the swimming but never put all on the weight on the ankle so is not strong enough. Didn´t run back then because I smoked like a damn bat.
About the breathing TW I truly understand, I have that problem with running and had it with swimming too, luckily this one is back but the running I don`t think I have a clue how I breath.

About the breathing, try running at a slower pace, like a slow jogging, and building time on it. See if you can develop a natural rythim of your own. Or try using your belly to breathe, even when youre not doing any exercise, practice breathing slowly and deeply.
Sooooo too much cooking and baking is catching up with me. Time to get serious, now that fresh produce season is over. I just started a routine of 45 minutes on the exercise bike and either weights or core work each day. This will be my third day of my new routine, and I hope I can keep it up. Help me, peeps!
@ Basi! I'm proud of you. I know how horrible is to start from what it looks like ground 0! I'm here for support! (Me and the Sports Bra ) I'm swimming lately. Got a gym pass and gym has pool. It've missed it.
Donnie, I'll race ya! Thanks for the support, peeps.
Dolan, I do workout at home at this point, since I don't get up to town that often. I want to renew my spa membership so that I can go swimming, but I can't really justify the expenditure at the moment. And I have a couple of standing ab routines that I like to do. I found them on youtube, and they're pretty good. I'd like to work in some pilates, but haven't found a video that I like yet. Any suggestions would be welcome.
The problem with YouTube Pilate's workouts is that all the good ones are only teases, not full sessions. There is a subscription app Pilate's Anytime that is really amazing. Has everything for every skill level. I think its $10 a month. I use it when I'm feeling frisky.
Core workout: plank plank plank.
