I gave Nic Pizzolatto the benefit of the doubt in episode one, but episode two pretty much confirms to me that Paul has gayngst.  Unless Nicky Pizz has some elaborate scheme up his sleeve and is just using these clues to mislead us, but I really do not think so.  I actually like the transparency.

I didn't Cary. Smash the beetles, you say. I fucking hated that speech. But some think it is the greatest thing in that ep! Who am I to piss in their cereal?!

So someone cleans up Vince Vaughn's character crew and partner. Has to be personal. I keep thinking Pizzolato will make it probably a street robber or something equally semi anticlimatic like last season. Surprised about the rubber shot. Another clue that it wasn't anyone else they were trying to off, only Frank Symion's peeps. Maybe he didn't know Velcoro is one bought by Frank. Weird dream for Frank.

Strange feeling I have about this season. The story is slow moving yet the episode is passing by fast. Not sure why that is.

As for the Cary Fukunaga rumor and Nic casting a director that looks like him to parody the man, I think it's absolutely horseshit. I didn't see it in the scene and for the record I sat for the credits. Fukunaga still listed as an exec producer for this season. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

I am trying hard, but I am having a lotta trouble getting into the plot and none of the characters have been engaging. I think I just keep watching, hoping it will get better.

I'm liking it. OLS wanted to watch Ep 3 right away at 6pm after we watched Ep 2. Like TW said, the pacing is slow but I'm really getting into it.

:happydance: Yep, Colin's character is alive, "he's alive!!!". KK, had to do that teehee. Yep, must have been some "camp" that Taylor's character went to, i.e. motorcycle meet. One agency is trying to throw the other out and the others' player/cop, jeez. Not sure how Colin's ex-wife fits into all this, but her offering him that money to get out of town gave me whiplash.

I'm not decided, In a way I kinda like it, and I think there's something interesting in every character. But on an artistic level, I find it a bit...boring? Not much vision so far.

As usual, I liked the crazy Vinci head of police, his wacko family (whats with his wife's eyes?), and the state vs. Vinci stuff. Aside from that, more yawns. I'll keep watching, but besides the upcoming orgy scene, who cares?

It´s a fucking yawn. Yes, might look interesting here and there but thinking about first season it can be all just a big lie. Season 1 ended up being pretty shallow. Or something like that.

I barely know what the fuck is going on.

Not really surprised about an orgy. It´s all about whores anyway, since episode 1.

I want to pick a favorite actor and I can´t.disbelief Is not like they suck but they lack something.

I just watched episode 1 and man is Collin Farrel a miscast, which is a shame because the character is great. And Vince Vaughn is also unsurprisingly meh. I do like the Sheriff woman (Anna???) and the other cop (was it Paul?), though. Don't know if I'll keep watching. What do you all think?

It's been a slow build, which is frustrating. I think I had overly high expectations after last season, and it has colored my opinion. I'm hoping that there's a great storyline that will come together in the next couple of weeks, so I've kept watching for now.

Wow, that's disgusting. Thanks for posting it, Dolan. Season 1 without Cohle's well-formed nihilistic world view would have been a shell of the show it was. There was amazing acting, but Cohle's dialogue is what really set it apart from your average cop show...which is exactly what this season is. Such a shame.

some of those excerpts where word for word.

if it was just the simlar motifs, i'd be fine with it, but he went way too far. and keep in mind those were the parts that made Mccnaughey and Harrison get on board with the project.

Meh, he admitted it prior and did not take full credit. Would be worse if he took credit. Anyway, the Ligotti stuff was the WORST part of Season 1 anyway.

However, season two is a joke. And I called the Gayngst. High five TW!

The article i posted covers that, but since you're not going to read it i'll paste it here:

"MD: But in this Wall Street Journal interview, Pizzolatto does talk at length about Ligotti’s influence on the show.

JP: Only under pressure. Here’s what was happening behind the scenes: WSJ reporter Michael Calia and I (and plenty of other Ligotti readers) had already noticed that Rust Cohle’s monologues and other dialogue were peculiarly Ligottian (his prose is very distinctive). In an interview with the True Detective creator, Arkham Digest editor Justin Steele even brought up Cohle’s “Ligottian wordview”, and I was frustrated when Pizzolatto evaded his question, at least as it concerned Thomas Ligotti or his work. Three of nine commenters on that interview page also noticed that Pizzolatto appeared to be evasive in dealing with the Ligotti influence question. At that point, I tried to get an interview with Pizzolatto about Ligotti’s influence on True Detective—writing to his agent—but I was told politely that Pizzolatto was “up to his ears in post-production and working on season two of True Detective.”

Then I started digging. Mr. Calia was coincidentally already working on an article centering on the influence by past and present masters of weird horror tales on True Detective, so I decided to analyze Cohle’s familiar dialogue and compare it side by side with Ligotti’s prose in The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. I quickly sent Mr. Calia the results of my research, and he used just the tip of the iceberg of evidence I had uncovered in his article – perhaps cannily implying that “The Most Shocking Thing About HBO’s ‘True Detective’” was that Pizzolatto lifted text and ideas from an author he had hitherto explicitly refused to acknowledge as an influence.

Shortly after the article’s publication, Calia interviewed Pizzolatto in a follow-up to his original article. It seems that the “too busy” writer suddenly had time for an interview mostly about, you guessed it, Thomas Ligotti. Usually I would give any kind of writer who appeared so praising of Ligotti the benefit of the doubt, but I knew how deep the plagiarism issue ran, and I had no illusions that Pizzolatto suddenly and coincidentally wanted to talk about Ligotti after already having dozens and dozens of opportunities to do so before. Was Pizzolatto in damage control mode (i.e., “I don’t want to get in legal trouble” mode)? Quite suddenly Thomas Ligotti was one of his top literary influences, an acknowledgement that would never be repeated again in a full-length interview or, to my knowledge, elsewhere."

That same article compares Rustin Cohle's lines in the episodes with Ligotti's writing. then compares Cohle's lines in the original script with Ligotti's. I can't emphasize this enough when i say you should really read that article.

And those lines are what made Mcconaughay and Harrison to jump on board with the project. Shit, this show might not even have been green-lighted by HBO if it wasn't for the plagiarized parts.

That's really fucked up man.

This internet drama about TD is old though. I do remember reading about it. It didn't get such a wide coverage because it would be like Nietzsche online fans yelling "plagiarism" for the nihilistic approach that Pizzolato incorporated and taking verbatim for example "Time is a flat circle" straight from Thus Spoke Zarathustra. There's a bunch of "inspiration" taken from a bunch of nihilistic philosophers. I remember a Slate article saying that the ending was straight from Alan Moore. When you start to take from so many it's difficult to make the case for a single one as plagiarism. Pastiche it's what they say it's called. At least he stayed clear this season from inspirations. I hope he doesn't use some Shakespeare "to be or not to be" quote followed by "all the world's a stage" without having Shakespeare in the credits, cause that will get him into some shit again.

But that sounds like he should be off the hook. I think this makes his credibility go out the window.
Specially with the snoozefest this season has been so far, when he apparently tried to be "original" - until further notice.

Most of the ep was same hum-drum noir drama, but that last shootout was pretty damn good.

Ani is gonna catch all the blame for this isn't she, eventhough I don't feel it was her fault. But multiple police and civilian casualties, that is gonna be a goddamn mess.

Ah, it makes sense the last ep was a marked improvement, it was directed by Jeremy Podeswa, the "Hardhome" director of GOT, dude can direct the hell out of an action scene!

Jeremey Podeswa? Really? Hmmm. He didnt do Hardhome, that was Miguel Saporick (sp). But he did give us that glorious ep 3, probably the best acted and written episode of the season.

Aside from the shootout at the end, what a snore of an episode 4. The whole Vince Vaughn motif of having to be the bad mobster guy because his crappy little empire isn't paying out is starting to get really really old. It was old in episode 2...especially now that we've only seen his cronies beat up one guy on the side of the road. Taylor Kitsch, OK he's gay. Tell me again why this matters at all? We're halfway through the season and at this point Miguel Sapochnik can't even save this trainwreck.

p.s. orgy

This show is really bad. Terrible bland characters get the most clichéd trite bullshit backgrounds to give them depth or to make them edgy. Gay angst war veteran who got his girlfriend pergnant, tough bitch cop with daddy-issues, drunk degenerate cop who can't see his son, mobster with moneytroubles who can't have kids. Then on top of that we have Game of Thrones quality dialogue, an awful soundtrack, subpar acting and the shootout was badly directed, unrealistic and just fucking stupid. The story is way too fucking simple to stretch it out over multiple episodes, Law&Order would have wrapped this up neatly in 1 episode. No reason to keep on watching.

that's ok Ry. I gave it my best shot to pitch it! I don't think it is anywhere close to Justified or the Wire which are the last cop shows I've seen. Well, I'm not sure if Justifed qualifies but it's as close as I'll get in the last (I don't know, probably 6-7 yrs if not longer) but I don't think it is a complete fail either like Japie. Maybe tries too hard and definitely is laying it thick on the drama for every single one of its main characters. But I've got nothing else new Sat and well, it's something.
