From the sullied recap at WotW:

Through Bran’s visions, we’re treated to a flashback of happier times in Winterfell, seeing young Ned (Sebastian Croft) and little Benjen Stark (Matteo Elezi) and their tomboyish sister Lyanna (Cordelia Hill). Surprisingly, we also see a very young Hodor (Sam Coleman) – or “Wyllis,” as he was called back then when he could speak without impairment.

The big one was Ser Rodrik! You can tell by the cool sideburns, and he was the Master at Arms after all.

Bran even name-dropped Benjen.  The line was something like, "that's my father and my uncle Benjen."  So much happened in this episode, though, it's inevitable some people caught some things others didn't.  I know there have already been a few things I've seen people discussing where I went, oh...I totally missed that...hahaha.  The name-drop, though, gives me greater hope we will be seeing Benjen, again, although I realize the hope may be in vain.

I had thought the older kid standing back and observing was Brandon, at first.  After seeing lots of discussion about the older kid's facial hair, though, I'm thinking those who are saying it was Rodrick are probably right.

Did anyone realize that when Ned tells Benjen to keep the shield up or I'll ring you like a bell is the same exact thing that Jon tells Olly when they were sparring?

Yep. George is royally fucked. The show is confirming theory after theory and it's only a matter of time before we head into entirely unpredictable spoiler material.

Big guy was without a doubt Ser Rodrik Cassel, rocking those mutton chops. The kids were Ned and Benjen, that was even stated outright.

I dunno who showed up in the last trailer, but some say it is Smalljon Umber....but wasn't Bran and Osha at the Umbers? Yikes! freakout

Hmmm I think there's a twist here re: the Umbers. I know Rickon is with them, and do I remember correctly but didn't Ramsay mentioned them along with the Karstarks and the Manderleys when talking about their allies? Now, if the speculation is true and the Umbers will hand over Rickon as a gift to Ramsay, my personal bet is that they're playing a risky game but with the intent on turning against the Boltons when the time is right.

What would they gain now by handing over Rickon, who was supposedly with them for some time? Instead, let's remember they lost the head of their family at the Red Wedding, no? We've already seen the Karstarks play puppy with the Boltons, it would be a bit redundant to see the Umbers do the same this early in the season, unless they're playing a double game. It's hard to believe they wouldn't seek revenge, so many northern houses lost people at the RW. Perhaps some of them are still hostages and so it's hard for their families to retaliate, but their patience or fear has to end at some point.

Re: the episode as a whole. Still don't like the directing, and didn't much like the writing either. Is it just me or is Tyrion simply not funny anymore? Him and Varys are getting a bit boring together, me thinks. I cringe every time I see we're in Meereen. Also, Davos's lines with Mel seemed a bit forced, but Liam and Carice made that scene great so I'll give it a rest, because the rest of the episode was also good.

Sansa and Theon are fantastic together, it's a pity he left her, but Pyke suddenly became a very interesting place to be at. Everybody is almost cartoonish there, with poor Yara sporting a "WTF am I doing here? WTF are these people doing?" look all the time. I love the Ironborn, they're completely messed up. Euron will probably take over (loved his introduction), but between Yara and Theon i hope something good can come out of that place in the end.

Poor Walda, that scene was painful to watch. Her father won't care, he'll never know she was murdered anyway, Ramsay will probably spread the word that she died in childbirth or something. Ugh, sometimes I remember all of this is happening at Winterfell of all places. Speaking of Winterfell, looooved the flashback. The kids were nice, Benjen is definitely coming back this season YAY MUST HAPPEN, Max Von Sydow with his cool, calm self. That Hodor moment in the cave was so well done, but the Children of the Forest look terrible. God, I hate feline make-up.

Wut else, can't remember, so happy to have finally seen the ritual at the end, and I thought it was very wise not to have any nudity or silly sacrifices this time. Mel is the real deal, and her character is becoming a joy to watch. I hope she and Davos will share a scene talking about Shireen and how pointless and tragic her sacrifice was, I'd like to see her repent for that.

Oh, just a final thought, but the more I think about it, the more it feels like Bran has to meet Benjen if they are to travel out of that cave. Not only for protection (they have no one else) but also because they need someone that can ride or provide them with some faster way of travel, otherwise they'd be slower than GRRM's writing pace.

I never said it was Jory in the flashback.

I don't think the writing is bad Macha I think Dinklage has been off  these first two episodes, making his scenes pretty much bleh.

I read some reviews saying that the kennel scene is the final straw and they're not going to watch anymore. Really? Have been far worse scenes going all the way back to season 1. And if you did not stop watching after a little girl screamed for her mom getting burned at the stake, then I think you can sit through pretty much anything.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I was also disappointed that the Umbers joined the Boltons, as the Umbers were some of the most loyal Stark followers. But we have to yet officially know what happened to the GreatJon greatjon and hear from his son.

Since the Umbers always lead the vanguard, it could have great repercussions if they turned on the Boltons mid-battle. Oh man I would love it if they did an homage to one of my fave scenes from Braveheart:

Totally knew it was Rodrick. Also seen as the whole show is loosely based on war or the roses amongst other things . .I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Umberleigh do a Richard III last battle . I'd have to check wiki to see the name of the house that betrayed him , but . .

You could be right Ry, maybe it isn't the writing that's the problem, but then if it's the actor's fault in this case (actually, in most cases) I'd blame the director in the end because that's his job, to direct his actors.

Directing is a nightmare on its own, even worse on TV and not only that, they have to share the cast with 5 other directors and there more than likely not even enough rehearsal time.

Yes, GOT has the biggest budget of all TV shows, but no matter your budget, it will never buy you enough time, for the short turnaround TV requires.

I've thought this since the Sansa scene last year, but the comments about the kennel scene confirms it in my mind:  Hitchcock was totally right (not that I'd really doubted him, but, for me, these are two current examples of it) in that the less you show, the more the audience's imagination fills in the blanks, thus whatever the scene is becomes even more disturbing than it likely would have been if certain things were shown.

In both Sansa's wedding night and Walda's death were shown offscreen.
If you can handle it, then its YOUR imaginations fault.

Totally disagree..  i gave zero shits for Walda and her fake baby.  Felt the same way when Janos killed Bobbys bastard in S1.

And I wasn't that disturbed about Sansa, especially since the description was much more graphic in the books. It *is* only television after all, no matter how invested one is. Not real. Ah, if it's simply bad writing and one gets bored with it, I completely understand. But getting infuriated with a show, meh...can't relate to that, it just seems silly.

This wasn't so bad. Some cringy moments ("punch me in the face next time") but overall the flow of the episode was quite pleasant. As a baseballguy I fear for regression in the coming episodes though, I don't see D&D pull a Daniel Murphy.

I wasn't talking about whether someone gave a shit about Walda or her baby, I was talking about those who say they're going to quit the show because of the violence in the Sansa scene, or the violence in the kennel scene.  While, yes, they showed the beginning of the violence in each scene, Sansa having her dress torn and being bent over, and the dogs beginning to attack and Walda kind of ducking, they didn't directly show anything else.  We heard what happened, in Sansa's scene, we saw Theon seeing what was happening, and we heard the dogs and the screams in the kennel scene, but we, the audience, didn't see it.  Whatever the details are of what actually transpired was filled in by the viewer.

No, not only you. It´s terrible and don´t listen to Ry (biggrin), it is the writing. The stupid jokes about Varys not having balls, come on already. The first try with Littlefinger was already bad.

This episode didn´t suck like the first one, still trying to forget that final closeup shot of Jorah, closing his fist saying "they got her", like in the most terrible soap opera. That one won´t be easy to forget. That whole scene with Daario was really painful.

I did like Sansa and Theon, a lot actually! seemed written and directed by someone else.

And Wun Wun smashing around night watchers was fun. And the flashback at Winterfell, that was sweet.
